PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT - MUSIC!
Each week, we will be highlighting one of our programs or offering resources for parents to illustrate The Radcliffe Way!

MUSIC through Language and Art

"Music is the art of thinking with sounds organized in rhythms, melodies harmonies, texture, forms, and timbre. Art has similar elements of color, form, design and texture while dance and language have parameters in common with music and art. Experiencing a single concept through multiple art forms makes a profound impact on learning and the class becomes an exciting adventure." Sofia Lopez-Ibor

The practice of enhancing the music experience by integrating art and language-based activities is currently in full swing in Radcliffe's music classes! Currently, the RCS music students are undertaking composition through the mediums of weaving and storyboarding. These language and art-based practices have created a foundation for compositional structure (weave) and programmatic vision (storyboarding), providing a safe and easy approach to placing musical ideas onto paper.

An example of Bella's Storyboard of the first three stanzas of "Simple Simon." The students composed a xylophone ostinato with a "pie" theme to accompany the melody they composed for this rhyme.

Example of a completed, multilayered c omposition.

Theo using a compositional "weave" to guide his progress. For young composers, each box represents a single beat. For more experienced students, the boxes are measures.

Example of a complete novice K-1 compositional "weave." The single letters per  are "ta" (quarter), double letters are "ti-ti" (paired 8th notes), and the squiggles are  rests.

The 2018 Run for Radcliffe is just around the corner - Saturday, May 26! Have you registered yet? Click here to do so today! This is the biggest fundraiser of the year for Radcliffe's scholarship fund and we are hoping for another great turnout. See you at the start line!
IMPORTANT REMINDER
It's come to our attention that parents are leaving cars with motors running in the parking lot:
  • Minors cannot be left unattended in a car with or without the motor running
  • Cars should not be left running in the parking lot
Thank you for your immediate attention to this important matter.

AROUND THE CREEK
Robbi Behr and Matthew Swanson visited Mrs. Herron's first period art class on Tuesday. Robbi and Matthew illustrate and write children's books and humorous books about everyday life. They shared with the students how they create their publications and the importance of collaboration. A big thank you goes to Darby Hewes for sponsoring this wonderful opportunity.

Douglas, Brady, Noland, and Chase celebrate after a game of Newcomb in Physical Education!

Students in Mrs. Sheubrooks' Positive Problem Solving Class worked cooperatively from start to finish to put on a play about problem solving pirates!

Students in Mrs. Johnson's Ecology classes explored the RCS wetland searching for tadpoles. No tadpoles were found, however the students were excellent fishermen and caught four fish for the class aquarium!

Collins works on his acrostic poetry and enjoys the great weather!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for last week's Thrive Night and congratulations to all our Drama students on yet another fantastic performance!
