Finger-Knitting for Kids: A Fun Way Build Fine Motor Skills at Home, Says OTD Program Director
Looking for ways to keep your kids busy? Occupational Therapy Program Director Sandra Rogers offers a fun, butterfly-themed activity that also helps improve fine motor and cognitive skills. This is good for all ages, but children ages 3-5 will need some assistance..

Finger-knitting butterflies uses  two colors of yarn, a twist tie/pipecleaner, and your fingers:

  • First finger-knit 18 rows
  • Then knit an additional 14 rows of the other color for the smaller wing.
  • Tie each finger knitted strand into a circle. Leave the excess wool from your finger knitting uncut.
  • Align the two circles, bringing the knots together to face each other, and then knot
  • Now add a pipe cleaner or twist tie or use another color of yarn to create some antennae.
