Principal's Message
No vember 3, 2017
Dear Families and Friends of OLQP:
At OLQP, our mission is to teach the whole child: body, mind, and spirit. Students are offered many opportunities to develop as leaders. In lower elementary, students have classroom jobs, work cooperatively, give presentations, perform, and more. As students mature, additional leadership opportunities are given. Students are leaders at morning prayer and special events. They serve on student council. They mentor younger students. At morning prayer, the middle school students serve as role models for the "little ones." They assist during class and after school by reading with younger students. Most recently, the middle school students researched saints and wrote children's books about their chosen topic. They then read their books to the younger students. This is a "win-win." The older students are applying their research and summarizing it in an understandable way. The younger students are learning something new and valuable. Both groups are enjoying the fellowship of familial sharing. Our school does not have artificial divisions of children by age but is more like a true family where the older children learn by caring for the younger children. It is a great gift that the children give to each other. Thank you for being part of the mission and ministry of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic School.

Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam,
Mrs. Marianne Mechura, M.Ed.

Accelerated Reader
Accelerated Reader is one component of the Renaissance Learning suite of services. The research-driven program supports student outcomes in several ways. It is a tool used to support the reading curriculum at OLQP. Students are required to participate in an "independent reading" program. Teachers are able to identify and direct student reading to the appropriate level. Comprehension tests are taken and evaluated on-line. Teachers can use the data to validate student achievement or provide intervention strategies to strengthen competence. Vocabulary quizzes are also available on-line and are structured in a way to actually help students develop vocabulary skills. The tests use repetition to increase mastery.
Parents can support student achievement in reading by helping students reach their reading goals. Teachers either set a number of points or daily length of reading time for students. Encouraging students to commit to reading each evening can make a difference. Making time for reading as a family helps students see it as a family value. Providing good reading material, sharing what is read as a family, and discussing books, news, and articles all contribute to developing students who become life-long readers.
