Take your church to the world

In a Zoom video-conference training Thursday, March 19, the Eastern PA Conference offered church leaders plenty of how-to’s for transporting worship from one sanctuary into many homes… electronically.

The two-hour, experimental, highly interactive session engaged 300 lay and clergy participants, the maximum allowed for the conference’s Zoom business account. In fact, more would-be participants sent email messages reporting their inability to log in. Several Baltimore-Washington Conference pastors even logged in , as word of the training event spread south of our borders.

Titled “ Taking Church to the World, ” the upbeat video-chat session shared great advice, instruction and creative ideas. It was also timely, as churches are urged to refrain from face-to-face interactions in groups of more than 10, due to the coronavirus pandemic sweeping across our nation. That stern advice includes worship, classes, meetings and other church gatherings.

Six presentations lasted about 20 minutes each and included on-screen demonstrations and plenty of questions and answers offered both vocally and in visible chat-space text. Learn more.. .
Churches not among 'non-life-sustaining' PA businesses that must close by Friday 8 PM
HARRISBURG, PA — All "non-life-sustaining" businesses in Pennsylvania must close their physical locations as of 8 p.m. Thursday to slow the spread of coronavirus, Gov. Tom Wolf announced in an order . The order does not include churches or “religious organizations.”

Enforcement actions against businesses that do not close physical locations will begin at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, the governor's office said. Violators could face fines or even imprisonment.

Wolf said the businesses must close because "this virus is an invisible danger that could be present everywhere. We need to act with the strength we use against any other severe threat. And, we need to act now before the illness spreads more widely."

A list of life-sustaining businesses is here . They include grocery stores, gas stations, and pharmacies, but not “religious organizations”

UMC leaders postpone 2020 General Conference
With the coronavirus disrupting lives worldwide, General Conference organizers determined they have no choice but to postpone The United Methodist Church's top legislative assembly.

The Minneapolis Convention Center — scheduled to host the 2020 General Conference — announced it is now canceling gatherings of 50 or more people through May 10. The shutdown covers the first five days of the denomination’s 10-day meeting, which was set to draw 862 delegates, 66 bishops and others from four continents.

"This news is not unexpected based on the current guidance from health officials and we expect to move forward with new plans as quickly as possible,” Kim Simpson said in a statement . She is the chair of the Commission on the General Conference that plans the big meeting. Learn more...

Virus alters but does not stop Sunday worship
From a kitchen island to a comfy sofa, in pajamas or a T-shirt, on a laptop or a mobile phone — a number of United Methodists went to church online this past Sunday, some of them for the first time. Whether by suggestion or mandatory decree, churches around the U.S. began to adjust March 15 to what it means to be a worshipping community during the coronavirus outbreak.

“We want them to be in relationship with one another even if that’s through technology,” said the Rev. Patty Groot, a Louisville, Ky., pastor. Learn more…
Limit gatherings to 10 people for next 8 weeks (or longer?) due to pandemic
Bishop Peggy Johnson has revised her appeal to churches to further reduce any gatherings over at least the next two weeks, to not 50 but 10 people or less to limit exposure to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic sweeping the nation. (See “ A Time and a Purpose .”)

All Americans, including the young and healthy, should avoid gathering in groups of more than 10 people, avoid all non-essential travel and avoid eating in bars, restaurants and public food courts. Americans should follow these increased CDC guidelines for the next 15 days, after which the agency will re-evaluate whether those recommendations will be extended.

Further updates may extend that period for more weeks or months, depending on the progress of nascent efforts to contain and mitigate the spread of the potentially deadly coronavirus outbreak. Learn more...

Seeing beyond our needs on UMCOR Sunday, March 22
We read or watch on the news and see communities overwhelmed by natural disaster. We hear about humanitarian crises arising from civil unrest and war. We know that famine and drought are caused by climate change and see in our own community signs of food insecurity. And, of course, when we are also in the midst of our own suffering, it is hard to see beyond our own needs to help someone else.

It can seem like too much. How could we possibly make a difference? How can our limited resources make a dent in the seemingly never-ending need of the world? Through the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), we can make a difference in the lives of communities and individuals whose lives have been upended by storms, wars, climate change, and displacement. Through UMCOR, we see the impact of extravagant grace through the generosity of United Methodists. Learn more...

Resolution info from new Conference Secretary
The Rev. Jacqueline Hines is our new Conference Secretary. Please welcome her and use the following address for all official correspondence:  conferencesecretary@epaumc.org . Information about submitting resolutions is provided on behalf of the new Conference Secretary:

The Rules of Order for the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference state that the deadline for resolutions to be submitted shall "be set by the Conference Secretary and shall be at least thirty days prior to Annual Conference." The Rules of Order also require that resolutions "shall be printed and distributed to the members of Annual Conference at least ten days prior to the Annual Conference session." In recent years we have made the printed resolutions available at the District Conferences, not just 10 days before the Annual Conference session. To make this possible, the deadline for submission of resolutions has to be moved beyond the 30 day window.

For the 2020 session of Annual Conference, resolutions are therefore to be submitted by Friday, March 27, 2020 to the Conference Secretary at: conferencesecretary@epaumc.org.

Your prompt submission of resolutions is requested, preferably before the deadline . Learn more...

After the earthquake there was a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a still, small voice.” 1 Kings 19:12

Life is NOISY. Life is MESSY. Life is OVERWHELMING.

Can you find God in all of this confusion? Are you even looking for God?

Elijah was looking. He was even told to stand on the mountain and the Lord would pass by… and he waited. He expected him in the torrential wind, he expected him in the earthquake, and then in the fire. But the Lord spoke after all of the confusion,  in a still small voice, a whisper.

We need to declutter our lives, our emotions, and our thoughts. We need to stop talking and start listening. Listen to our partners, our children, our friends, and listen for God.

Come join us at the 2020 EPA Laity Academy to learn about our Lord while exploring your personal ministry path. This weekend will be focused on serenity, prayer, and introspection. Come and enjoy the classes, fellowship, worship and entertainment.
