March 19, 2020
Dear Ones of the Grace Church Community,
I come to you in the love of Christ who tells us not to be afraid—not because God does not see our suffering or understand our fear; not because God sees our fear as evil or weak—but because God is always near. Indeed, in a time of chaos, when so much is unknown, Jesus comes to us in the midst of life, reaches out his hand and says, “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.” God is with us. God gives us to be with each other. Do not be afraid, means I believe, together with God’s help, we will hold each other through the storm. (Matthew 14:22-33)
We continue to learn more about COVID-19. This virus is unique because while it is a coronavirus, which includes the common cold, this virus is “novel.” Which means that no one has any immunity to its effects. So we must be particularly vigilant in caring for ourselves and for caring for each other. You have heard many of the precautions: Wash your hands thoroughly and often (for more than 20 seconds). Stay at least 6 feet from each other. Avoid large gatherings. If you begin to feel symptomatic, stay home and call your doctor if the symptoms persist.

In an effort to care for each other, we are closing the Grace Church office effective

God of the present moment,
God who in Jesus stills the storm
and soothes the frantic heart;
bring hope and courage to all
who wait or work in uncertainty.
Bring hope that you will make them the equal
of whatever lies ahead.
Bring them courage to endure what cannot be avoided,
for your will is health and wholeness;
you are God, and we need you.
