Dear Neighbors,

I returned to work at City Hall this morning honored. Thank you to each of you who placed your confidence in my service as your Mayor for four more years.

More importantly, thank you for your faith in our collective future.

A predecessor of mine, Mayor Tom McEnery, occasionally told me, "San Joseans always vote for the future." I understand better today what he meant.

I'm inspired by the grassroots energy that emerged from our efforts to defeat Measure B-a deceptive measure to build a sprawling, exclusive gated community in our Evergreen foothills-and to pass Measure C, an antidote to future schemes in environmentally sensitive areas like Coyote Valley. Although they outspent us 10-1, we prevailed due to an extraordinary and passionate coalition of environmentalists, neighborhood leaders, affordable housing advocates, and community-minded tech employers who came together to seize a victory for our environment, for honest government, and for our future generations.

We also came together to invest in the future by approving Regional Measure 3. Its passage will enable us to move forward with BART construction to Downtown and the Airport, connect East San Jose to BART with light rail, expand Diridon Station, and install express lanes on 101.

I've rolled up my sleeves, eager to continue our work together to make San Jose America's next Great City.

Onward!
