Fine Arts

Lovejoy Visual Art

The Lovejoy Visual Art program completed its year at LHS with one of the most outstanding art galleries to date. The Advanced Placement Studio galleries this year represented those students who created an incredible portfolio of work, which was submitted for adjudication through the College Board Advanced Placement courses.

This year, the Visual Art team made the decision to host two galleries; one focusing on student work in AP Studio 3D and a second gallery featuring those students in AP 2D. The Studio 3D gallery was an incredible representation of sculpture technique and advanced ability. The students worked with ceramic, wood carving, and stone carving among other artistic mixed-medium choices. This was the first independent installation for the AP 3D students. The showcase featured six students: Katie Felton, Lindsay Hammond, Griffin Hunt, Trace Sutherlin, Ethan LeGare, and Jackie Albers.

The AP Studio 2D Gallery hosted the art work of 14 students. The span of work within the portfolios included a variety of mediums from classic drawing and painting, to more detailed installations, which included a bedroom and large canvas works. Many of the students in AP Studio 2D Drawing will further their interests in visual art and pursue an education at such notable campuses like Savanah College of Art and Design and the Maryland Institute College of Art. In total, the students in the AP Studio 2D class earned approximately $1.7 million in scholarships for visual art and academic merit. The AP 2D show featured the extraordinary works of Emma Wigginton, Eli Ruhala, Tad Greenwald, Anna Redman, Carly Johnson, Kara Davis, Grace Kirby, Jessica Teague, Isaac Wingard, Avery Silliman, Katie Miller, Kass Litchenburg, Sarah Nash, and Mallory Sailer.

Congratulations to all of our Advanced Placement studio students and teachers.

WSMS Theatre Arts Gives Back

The Willow Springs Middle School Theatre Arts Department was recently invited to perform at the Camp New Horizons American Diabetes Association camp for kids with Type 1 Diabetes. The Theatre program shared a 30-minute production of Charlotte's Web for approximately 90 campers and counselors. Kathie Hunt, the Volunteer Director of the camp said, "The kids loved the performance of Charlotte's Web and you could have heard a pin drop, which at camp is a real novelty! It was beyond wonderful and everyone was blown away that a school district would come out and do something like that for our camp. I wasn't surprised and said that Lovejoy is a family and we do things like this all the time for each other."

Fourteen WSMS Theatre students and families will be traveling to London in June. They will enjoy visits to numerous museums, and will see Phantom, Wicked, As You Like It, and The Play That Goes Wrong.
