Thank you to everyone who participated in
MO HR Day of Service on May 4th! We had such a great time getting out into our local community offering our expertise while also connecting with our fellow SHRM-KC members. This was the first year we have done anything like this and we certainly learned a lot and already have great ideas for ways to make it even more successful next year.
I want to especially thank
Kristie Lyons and the College Relations and Workforce Readiness Committee for all their hard work on not only this event but also their hugely successful College Networking Roundtable in April that brought out more than 20 students to learn more about the HR profession! As everyone knows, volunteering your time is a huge commitment in addition to your day job and this group worked tirelessly to plan and execute two huge back to back events. Thank you all for your hard work and dedication to SHRM-KC!
Everything SHRM-KC does is possible because of our volunteers and our members. Not only our board and committee members, but also our active members. By attending events, actively participating, networking, etc. you make our programs more worthwhile for yourselves and the others attending.
Now that our couple hours of spring have passed and we are fully engrossed in summer, I hope you are able to enjoy some of the warm weather, pool or lake time with friends and family and soak up enough vitamin D to last you through the rest of the year! Of course we at SHRM-KC aren't slowing down; we continue to have a lot to offer you so if this happens to be a slower time for you at work, take advantage and get out to some of our luncheons, book club, comp workshop or diversity dialogues.
Remember, YOU make our events better just by being there!
Hope to see you there soon!
Jessica Robino, SHRM-SCP, SPHR

SHRM Membership Recruitment Campaign
|
Refer a friend or colleague!
|
Research shows that word of mouth and personal referrals are the best way for association groups such as
SHRM-KC to reach potential new members. As part of our ongoing efforts to promote the HR profession in the Kansas City area, we want to encourage our members to share the benefits of
SHRM-KC membership with your colleagues. To promote membership referrals, we are providing the following incentive:
For any new member that you refer who joins our chapter, you will earn a $25 Visa gift card!
There is no cap on the number of incentives you can earn, so the rewards are unlimited! In order for the referral to be credited correctly to you, the new member must list you as the referral source when they complete their membership application.

College Relations & Workforce Readiness
|
Remember what it was like in school trying to figure out what path you wanted your career to take? How about that time you had to update your resume as you were making a career transition in the professional world? If so, then we need you on the College Relations/Workforce Readiness Committee to help share your expertise. We partner with local colleges and their HR students to prepare them for a future in the human resources profession. We also work with students and professionals in transition with mock interview events and resume review to assist them in their job search.
Our main event is our college relations event called "Networking Roundtable with Human Resources Professionals." We held this event on April 4th and had 21 students attend! It was a great turnout and great informational session for all of the students! Thank you to the panel and committee members that made this event possible!
If you are interested in joining the committee, it meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 am at Panera Bread at
11022 Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park. Please contact
Kristie Lyons for more information.

Identity in the Workplace: Diversity & Inclusion Reflection |
E
very June marks the anniversary of the Stonewall Riot.
Christoper Street Liberation Day first held on June 2
8, 1970 and it's precursors, serves as
Annual Reminders,
days of remembrance and celebration for the GLBTQ community.
The first of such reminders for Kansas City was held in 1975 at what was known as the Gay Community House. The Pride Festival has transformed in many ways over the last 43 years, currently taking place each year the first weekend of June at Berkley Riverfront Park. The Kansas City Diversity Coalition, as producers of the Pride Festival, seek to continuously learn from the community, help determine programming opportunities for all within the spectrum, and to further create a safe space for all to celebrate their personal identity...MORE

Diversity & Inclusion Discussion Topics for June 2018
|
We all know there are many things to talk about when it comes to Diversity and Inclusion. Below are a few suggestions to bring up at your next meeting.
June 2018
-
June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month, established to recognize the impact that gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender individuals have had on the world. LGBT groups celebrate this special time with pride parades, picnics, parties, memorials for those lost to hate crimes and HIV/AIDS, and other group gatherings. The last Sunday in June is Gay Pride Day.
|
The Diversity & Inclusion Committee meets the 3rd Tuesday
of every month 5:30pm-7:30pm at District Pour House.
If interested in joining the D & I Committee,

Salary History and Pay Disparity
|
On April 9, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals issued its decision in
Rizo v. Yovino
, which held that salary history may not be used by an employer as a factor when defending gender disparities in initial wages, whether considered exclusively or in conjunction with other factors. The decision, which overruled a previous decision interpreting the Equal Pay Act, has caused some confusion and created a circuit split. Although the Ninth Circuit does not cover Missouri or Kansas, the case illustrates an evolving issue of which Employers across the country should be aware.
