That's the mission statement of the Boy Scouts of America. We develop youth. We instill values. That's our mission. We do it through a program of fun, adventure, learning, and leadership. We do it by being role models and mentors. We do it by being involved, caring, and present.
Throughout this newsletter are ways to be involved, to give adventure, and to provide opportunities for our youth to grow, learn, develop, achieve, and mature.
Read through to see how we can involve ourselves in the development of the young people around us.

It's Roundtable Time
Thursday, June 7, Is Roundtable
Unit leaders don't forget to send someone from your unit to the roundtable meetings. It's a great time to meet other leaders, share best practices, and ask questions.
June Is the Final Roundtable of the Year
Free BBQ, Town Hall Meeting, and Winter Camp Lottery
You should be there because the commissioners are preparing dinner! The council president (David Goodman), commissioner (Chris Cardinal), and Scout Executive (Michael Dybeck) recently returned from the BSA national meeting in Dallas. They will have any new information from that conference. There's one other point of business at the June roundtable: the winter lottery for Marin Sierra.
6:00 p.m.--Free BBQ dinner for all attending
7:00ish p.m.--Beginning of town meeting with council president, council commissioner, and Scout Executive. You will have a chance to ask questions of these people about what the council is doing.
7:45ish--Beginning of winter camp lottery. Your unit leader should have received the attendance sheets from roundtable. Your pick is determined by roundtable attendance, JTE score, whether you have a new unit coordinator, and unit committee training status.

Cub Scout Camping
Our Cub Scout camping season started out with excitement and fun up at Camp Tamarancho recently as many Cub Scouts and their families participated in Family Fiesta. Thank you for those who attended, and thanks to all the troops, crews, Order of the Arrow, and volunteers that made it a success!
Looking to the future, we are asking for your help. Several of our Cub Scout Camping Committee members are retiring and moving on to new adventures. To keep these events well planned and staffed, consider joining our camping committee. Contact

Wood Badge
This year, Marin Council is the host for the North Coast Cluster Wood Badge course which will be held at Tamaracho. By attending this course, you will receive advanced leadership training along with team-building skills and the formation of lifelong contacts and friends all while enjoying the beautiful outdoors. The course consists of two, three-day weekends as well as some follow-up work. After you complete the training and follow-up work, you receive an awesome mauve neckerchief as well as two wood beads on a leather thong all for a bargain basement price. However, most importantly, you receive training that will change your unit and possibly your life.
You ask who should take Wood Badge? The answer is anyone involved on the committee or program side of Cubs, Boy Scouts, or Venturing. The course covers the gamut of the programs and provides invaluable information as well as a network of experienced people.
Wood Badge will be held August 24-26 and September 14-16 at Tamarancho. So, there is no more convenient location for those in Marin Council.
New Youth Protection Training
There is a new Youth Protection Training that replaces the current version. All registered members must complete the New YPT by October 1, 2018. You will recognize the new version because there are four (4) distinct modules to take. There are no longer different versions for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturing, or Exploring. Even if...Yes, even if you just took the earlier version or are current within the past two (2) years, everyone will need to pass the new version. This new training can be accessed on my.scouting.org.
A live session will be conducted at Troop 59 on June 13, 7:00-8:30 p.m., at the Masonic Hall in Kentfield. Please attend if you are able so that you can complete this important requirement.

Marin Council Pinewood Derby Race
July 2, 1:00 p.m.
Thanks to some volunteers from Pack 28, we will again hold the race at the Marin County Fair!
The race is run by volunteers from packs and even troops and crews who set up, run, clean up after the race, and conduct two check-in days in June for packs to register their cars

Pinewood Derby Car Exhibition
LAST CHANCE!
Due in council office by June 6! We only have a couple cars right now.
Cars that are not in the race can be part of the Marin County Fair pinewood derby car exhibition. It's free! Forms are available on our web site by
clicking this link. We'd like to get as many cars from Cub Scouts at the Fair as possible because this exhibition is generously sponsored by Vanguard Automotive in San Rafael and a great showcase for Cub Scouts in Marin!

New BSA Leadership Requirements
With the addition of female youth throughout the Scouting program, the BSA has outlined new leadership requirements. Note that there are changes in registration, gender, and age requirements.
(Effective October 1, 2018) Two registered adult leaders 21 years of age or over are required at all Scouting activities, including meetings. There must be a registered female adult leader over 21 in every unit serving females. A registered female adult leader over 21 must be present for any activity involving female youth. Notwithstanding the minimum leader requirements, age- and program-appropriate supervision must always be provided.
(Effective now) All adults accompanying a Scouting unit who are present at the activity for 72 total hours or more must be registered as leaders. The 72 hours need not be consecutive.

Talako Lodge News
Talako Summer Ice Cream Service Project
During the Marin County Fair June 30-July 4, Talako Lodge will again be dishing out ice cream at the San Rafael Rotary booth. Swing by, and buy a float or come to help the Rotary in their support of education and student outreach for San Rafael schools.
Shifts for Marin Council troops may also be available upon request if we determine extra coverage is needed. Adult supervision required for your Scouts.

Talako to Celebrate 60 Years
Mark your calendars! Talako Lodge will celebrate 60 years of service to Marin Council and Scouting on September 29-30 at Camp Tamarancho. We are looking for your participation and fellowship during this historic moment in our Lodge history. Come up for the day, and stay for a tasty dinner, special night activities, and reflections on our unique tenure in the Order of the Arrow. There will be a presentation on the future of the Order by members of the 2018 NOAC Contingent.
The camp is ours on Saturday and we intend to celebrate. Arrowmen of any era and standing are welcome to join us. Bring the family. There will be a nominal charge (TBD) for the dinner. RSVP's in September. Questions? Comments? Email Kenn Moynihan.

Marin Council Shooting Sports
May Shooting Events
May 19 - Cub Scout Family Fiesta was held at Tamarancho with opportunities to shoot BB guns, archery and slingshots. About 65 Cubs and siblings participated.
May 26 - Mt. Diablo Silverado Council Troop 19 spent the day shooting .22 rifles and archery.
June Shooting Events
June 2 - SF Bay Area Council held a BB rifle shooting day for their council Cub Scouts.
Range Staff Training Opportunities
A general shooting sports training day will be held Sunday, June 24. Classes for range master for BB, archery, and slingshot/tomahawk will be offered. BB and archery classes are 4 hours long and slingshot/tomahawk is 1 hour.
A very detailed USS Archery Level 1 archery instructor class will be available if someone wants to get a more thorough skillset for archery. That class is 8 hours long. Contact
Keith Angerman for class times and to sign up. Please consider this training so we can continue to offer shooting events.
Free Shooting Available for Boy Scouts and Venturers
The Shooting Sports Committee offers a free hour of shooting for every hour spent doing a service project for the ranges at Tamarancho. Actually, you would have to pay for .22 ammunition but not for the range or rifle use. Since there is no charge for pellet ammo, your day could be totally free!

Exploring
Exploring is a unique career exploration program for young men and women ages 14-20. The program provides students with an opportunity to learn about a wide variety of career fields and network with professionals already working in those fields. Participants receive hands-on experience to help determine whether or not a particular career field is best for them. Valuable networking contacts with professionals working in selected career fields are developed, and Explorers get to know other youth with their same interests and aspirations.
Exploring is the first step in identifying career possibilities while having fun in an exciting and informal environment.
Marin Council currently has three fire posts, one law enforcement post, an aviation post, and a search and rescue post. We are looking to start two new law enforcement posts. Please contact

Fishing Derby Fun
A great time was had at the Marin Council Fishing Derby in May. Thanks to Joe Cilia and his crew for putting on another wonderful event. Also, thanks goes out to our long-time sponsor--the Marin Rod & Gun Club--for hosing the event!

Other Items
Thank you to all the units who have already registered a popcorn kernel for the fall! We will have our annual kick-off before the September roundtable. Forms with the dates and commission schedule will be on our web site this week. It's not too early to start reserving booth sale sites!
Habitat Restoration: Restore Open Oak Woodland
Saturday, June 16, 9:00 a.m.-Noon
Volunteers will focus on removing Douglas Fir seedlings from oak woodlands along Lagunitas Creek. Unchecked Douglas Fir growth turns wildlife, plant-rich meadows, and oak woodlands into dark, empty forests. Suitable for ages 13 and up. Meet at the Lake Lagunitas parking lot. Conservation and the Boy Scouts of America have been partners for a long time.
