Step inside the New York Public Library like you never have before. This documentary, directed by Frederick Wiseman, takes you behind the scenes of one of America's most expansive libraries. The New York Public Library exemplifies the deeply rooted American belief in the individual's right to know and be informed. It is one of the most democratic institutions in America - everyone is welcome. Anybody can enjoy this documentary but New Yorkers in particular will find much to appreciate. Give it a watch and don't forget that you, too, are eligible for a NYPL card to take advantage of many of their services

Staff Recommended Recipe : Shrimp Scampi with Linguini
|
|
|
Ingredients
- 1 pound linguini
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 4 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling
- 2 shallots, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- Pinch red pepper flakes, optional
- 1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined
- Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
- 1/2 cup dry white wine
- Juice of 1 lemon
- 1/4 cup finely chopped parsley leaves
|
|
- For the pasta, put a large pot of water on the stove to boil. When it has come to the boil, add a couple of tablespoons of salt and the linguini. Stir to make sure the pasta separates; cover. When the water returns to a boil, cook for about 6 to 8 minutes or until the pasta is not quite done. Drain the pasta.
- Meanwhile, in a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons butter in 2 tablespoons olive oil over medium-high heat. Saute the shallots, garlic, and red pepper flakes (if using) until the shallots are translucent, about 3 to 4 minutes. Season the shrimp with salt and pepper; add them to the pan and cook until they have turned pink, about 2 to 3 minutes. Remove the shrimp from the pan; set aside and keep warm. Add wine and lemon juice and bring to a boil. Add 2 tablespoons butter and 2 tablespoons oil. When the butter has melted, return the shrimp to the pan along with the parsley and cooked pasta. Stir well and season with salt and pepper. Drizzle over a bit more olive oil and serve immediately.(Recipe from www.foodnetwork.com)

Happy Children’s Book Week from the Customer Resource Services Department

Hi All!! I am Donna with my grandchildren, Joshua and Isabella. I work for the CRS department. I would like to share two of my favorite books I loved as a child. I drew the pictures and Joshua and Isabella colored them in. Hey guess what?
It turns out they love the same books too.
Harold and the Purple Crayon
by Crockett Johnson and
Harry the Dirty Dog
by Gene Zion.
Each book made you wonder what Harold was going to draw or what Harry would get himself into next. Both are great children's books with wonderful memories that my grandchildren and I can share together.
I can’t wait to see you all soon, checking out your favorite children's books!

Hello, I am Ernie from the CRS desk. One of the first chapter books that I remember reading as a child was
Charlotte’s Web
by E.B. White. This story is about a little girl named Fern that lives on a farm. When a runt pig is born, she convinces her dad to allow the piglet to survive as she will take care of it.
When Wilbur the pig grows too large, they sell him to her uncle at a nearby farm. Wilbur is lonely and befriended by a spider named Charlotte. Charlotte saves Wilbur from being slaughtered by leaving messages on her web for the farmer about Wilbur being a great pig.
This book is about friendship and how it affects the characters’ lives. Although Charlotte dies of old age by the end of the book she is succeeded by her children and grandchildren. I enjoyed this book as a child and read it to my children and grandchildren. This book is appropriate for 10 years old and older.

Hi, I’m Callan from the CRS department.
The first book I remember loving is
Guess How Much I Love You
by Sam McBratney. A father rabbit and his child try to show each other exactly how much they love each other before the child falls asleep. This book holds a special place in my heart because my father would read this to me before bed almost every night.
One line in the book is “I love you to the moon and back,” and he used to say that to me all the time. This is the perfect book to read to a child to make them feel loved so much whether it be before bed or any time of the day. Since my father read that book to me almost every night it led me to love reading all different types of books.
