PRESENTATION

Noelle Simmons, Deputy Director

and

Francesca Costa
CalFresh Outreach Program Manager

Program:  Nearly one in four San Francisco residents are food insecure, meaning that they are unable to obtain and prepare enough nutritious food to support their basic physical and mental health. This program will provide an overview of food insecurity in San Francisco, highlighting CalFresh - formerly known as food stamps - as one of the most effective programs to boost access to food resources for low-income individuals and families. Our presenters will connect you and your faith communities to resources that help fight hunger and increase enrollment in CalFresh .

Presenters:

Noelle Simmons  is Deputy Director of
the San Francisco Human Services Agency.  She overseas the administration of San Francisco's social safety net of public benefits and services for low-income families and individuals, including CalFresh , Medi-Cal , CalWORKS , and workforce develop-ment services. She also provides leadership to Project 500, a two-generation collective impact initiative that seeks to disrupt the intergenerational transfer of poverty.

Francesca Costa is the SF-Marin Food Bank's CalFresh Outreach Program Manager. She has worked with the Food Bank to expand access to CalFresh for the past five years, first through direct service to community members, and most recently through programmatic efforts like trainings and capacity building for community based organizations throughout San Francisco.

2017-2018 Interfaith Winter Shelter
Recognition Observance

Congregation Host Sites and Meal Providers
Episcopal Community Services
Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing
San Francisco Night Ministry

In 1988, the City of San Francisco pleaded for more involvement from religious organizations to help with the growing problem of homelessness. The faith community responded and in doing so created the San Francisco Interfaith Council (SFIC). For over 29 years the SFIC has hosted the San Francisco Interfaith Winter Shelter. Our partners in this signature program are Episcopal Community Services, the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing, San Francisco Night Ministry, four congregation host sites and over 50 congregations/organizations preparing and serving meals. This collaborative effort has worked to augment existing shelter opportunities during the coldest months of the year (November through March). The San Francisco Interfaith Winter Shelter provides dinner, breakfast and a safe, warm overnight rest for up to 100 homeless men each night. The shelter has become a leading example of interfaith cooperation within the United States and has intentionally encouraged and challenged our growing network of local congregations to open their spaces and their hearts.
