" We're all in this together. We make each other strong!
Being there for each other, is where we all belong! "

Dear Southern Door Community,
Today, Governor Evers and the Wisconsin Department of Health provided continued guidance which requires us to keep our school facilities closed for the rest of the school year. This means, that we will continue our “remote learning” as the means for educating your child through the end of the school year. Thus, all concerts, co-curriculars, and community activities scheduled during the rest of our school year are either postponed or will be canceled. Some of those events, which are annual recognition of student accomplishment may take place virtually or, like graduation, be postponed to a time when we can all safely gather together.

Since we anticipated this direction from the governor, we have already been planning for how our last six weeks of school would take place. Our administrative team, staff, and the Board of Education will continue to work closely to ensure that the best possible learning opportunities continue to be offered, and that we find ways to honor the special moments for our students.

The COVID-19 situation is constantly evolving and changing. We understand that it brings many unknowns and challenges, and many are working hard to help address the needs. Everyone’s priority – at the local, state, and national level is the same – our individual and collective health and safety, and from the school's perspective, our children’s education. A special thank you to all the healthcare workers, emergency personnel, and those who ensure that our basic needs are being met. There will likely be many lessons that we take from this experience, the least of which will be what an amazing community we have here in Southern Door, and also our appreciation for each other!

We deeply miss the life of school as we knew it before March. We long for the day when we can have every student and staff member back in our facilities, and experience their smiling faces, their energy, and the learning experiences we share together!

Please know that we are here, as a school district, to support you as we all continue to navigate these uncharted waters with COVID-19, and the challenges it brings to you, your family, and our community. Thank you for your continued partnership with us to educate your children. In Southern Door we take care of each other, and that is why we are Eagle Proud and Eagle Strong! Stay safe and keep healthy!

The spirit of giving comes alive at a young age.

Here is one more senior nominee for the Golden Heart Award Youth Scholarship and one for the Karl May LIfetime Achievement Award.
"Knowing that someone’s day is brighter because she helped in some small way makes Elizabeth Rose Bretl ’s heart happy. Through her work with Edge and the YMCA’s Girls Night Out program, she is able to be a positive influence on the lives of younger people. At the Holy Name of Mary’s Loaves and Fishes program, she enjoys serving warm meals to those who don’t often get a home-cooked dinner. Volunteering with the Giving Tree allows her to help those in our community who are less fortunate." script from Volunteer Center
Patti Vickman is one busy lady as the Superintendent of Southern Door School District. She serves on the board of directors or volunteers for many local non-profits - 19 is too many to name! Patti helped start the site-based Big Brother Big Sister Program that successfully operates in the Southern Door Schools. When Patti was told about this nomination, she said “I would only accept this nomination going forward with the understanding that I am just a representative of so many others who see their role as servant leaders.” script from Volunteer Center

“With the obstacles facing our world today, I wanted to remain positive in spreading not only my Door County pride, but our Southern Door Eagle pride! Since I am unable to be out in the community spreading awareness to my platform, building self-esteem in young women, through the Miss Door County Organization I wanted to show some positivity in a different way! I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy!” Thank you, Kaylee Griep, for connecting with us!
SALUTE TO OUR FORENSICS TEAM
This coming weekend would have been State Competition at UW-Madison for our High School Forensics Team: Seniors – Anna Alrand, Elizabeth Bretl, Theresa Kaser, Anna Meier, Abi Neubauer,Wil Perez-Munguia, Jenna Thiry, Jadacey Teska, Madison Tlachac; Juniors – Dylon Krueger, Suhani Patel, Dale Swanson, Brady Tooley; Sophomores – Lilly Bongle, Brynn Erickson, Kaylee Griep, Hailey Kroening, Hayley LeRoy, Stephany Massart, Dalena Pakalske, Anna Staudenmaier; Freshmen – Amanda Austin, Emily Baerman, Gary Barta, Ari Ditello, Kori Larsen-Ploeger, Hunter Malvitz, Michael Nessinger, Zach Rhoades, Brooke Strege, Cambria Willming, Grace Willming, Laura Zittlow.

What is Forensics? Forensics is a performance competition. Acting and Speech categories demand high quality vocal performances, top-notch acting, memorization, and a deep understanding in order to portray the meaning and emotion of the student selected work.

Considering this, it comes as no surprise that Southern Door High School's 2020 team is composed of 33 highly talented individuals, the largest team in Door County, and one of the larger teams in Northeast Wisconsin.

This year held many promises for our crew. All 33 of our team members advanced to District competition. Our Seniors had worked especially hard in their final year toward what they hoped would be a gold medal at State. Like so many of our High School Activities, the season had to be ended to ensure students' safety.

The coaching staff wanted to take this moment to give special thanks to SDHS Administration and our MS Forensics Coach, Mrs. Sharon Tupa for helping build up our program and their continued support of our students. We want to thank Mrs. Martinez, Mrs. Weinfurter, and Mrs. Rosemary Stuebi who Judge on behalf of our school. Our gratitude is abundant to our Southern Door Parents and community for  all  you do to help coordinate practice schedules and encourage confidence in each of our team members!

Lastly, we want to acknowledge our team. A very insightful, powerful woman, Dorothy Height, once said, "Greatness is not measured by what a man or woman accomplishes, but by the opposition he or she has overcome to reach his/her goals."  In this moment, the opposition is tough, but we - we are #EagleStrong, #EagleProud! You each have greatness in you and we are proud of your strength, dedication, grit, and leadership skills! Fly high!
