The NFL's Urban Forestry Initiative: Community Impact

In late May, we participated in the final urban forestry event of a year-long partnership between Tree Trust, local sponsors Verizon and Andersen Corporation, the National Football League, Minnesota Vikings, and Minnesota Super Bowl Host Committee.

Summer's Just Around the Corner

This week, Tree Trust kicked off our 42nd  Summer Youth Employment Program with the start of summer staff training!

This year, we've hired 18 seasonal staff to help lead our summer Youth Conservation Corps program, which will provide an outdoor summer job to 174 young people ages 14-21. Right now, our 2 counselors, 3 site supervisors, and 13 crew leaders are completing ten days of training to prepare them for the summer. They're learning technical construction training, safety, team management, and motivational interviewing skills. 

Participants will start on June 18th, and work through mid-August to build structural retaining walls, paver patios and walkways, and timber staircases in public parks throughout the metro area. 

Tree Trust also offers internships for young people at local businesses and organizations. The entire summer program employs hundreds of young people each year, providing many of them their very first job!

Reflecting on how she changed during her year in YouthBuild, Alexus laughed. "I'm scared of heights! But I actually got up on the ladder that leans against a garage we were working on, and I nailed in the nails even though I was scared. It was actually really fun, once I got up there and faced my fear!"

It's been a whirlwind season in our Community Forestry department, with more than 10 tree distribution and planting events so far this spring.
