As stewards of the public's trust, Michigan's 15 public universities are bringing their full slate of resources to bear in combatting the COVID-19 pandemic, marshaling medical and health care assets, research, facilities, protective gear and equipment, and a vast range of expertise spanning the disciplines. Outreach and collaboration are central themes in the universities' efforts to address this public health crisis.
 
Each week, we will share a sample of new programs and actions the state universities are taking in their efforts to respond to the coronavirus pandemic and that demonstrate the vital missions of Michigan's public universities.
Central Michigan University
Central Michigan University students, faculty, and alumni are playing key roles in a coronavirus testing chain that begins with nasal swabs in parking lots and ends in laboratories of the Department of Health and Human Services in Lansing.

Eastern Michigan University
An Eastern Michigan University professor is assisting a Grand Rapids company in its effort to create 20 million protective masks for state healthcare workers during the COVID-19 health crisis. Julie Becker, an associate professor of apparel, textiles and merchandising, is helping Applied Textiles, a producer of textile products, in its initiative to create 20 million masks.

Ferris State University
Professors and staff at Ferris State University aren't just serving students while working from home, they're also making face shields for healthcare workers. Some professors have been making face shields at home on 3-D printers.

Grand Valley State University
A Grand Valley State University graduate student who recovered from COVID-19 is donating plasma to "pay it forward" after being symptom-free for at least 14 days. She was approved in April and now donates plasma once a week.

Lake Superior State University
Since the coronavirus crisis, Lake Superior State University has made moves to reduce the financial burden for students. LSSU is now waving enrollment and housing deposits for all students.

Michigan State University
Michigan State University is seeking federal permission to decontaminate personal protective equipment for medical workers fighting COVID-19 using a hydrogen peroxide fog. The school has been working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to secure authorization to decontaminate thousands of N95 respirator masks, gowns, goggles and face shields for hospitals and emergency responders.

Michigan Technological University
The Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center (UGL) and the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department (WUPHD) have opened a site to the public at the Gates Tennis Center at Michigan Technological University.

Northern Michigan University
Since COVID-19 escalated in mid-March, Northern Michigan University alumni and Trenary Home Bakery co-owners Brianna Wynsma and Marco Dossena have been donating fresh bread, Trenary Toast, and other items to food pantries in Marquette and Gwinn. The NMU Food Pantry is one of their regular delivery stops.

Oakland University
Oakland University psychology major Rose Hazem is one of more than 60 health care workers who have taken up residence in OU's Hillcrest Hall, a move intended to curb the spread of COVID-19 from health care workers to their families. Hazem works the night shift at Beaumont Hospital in Troy with a team that cares for around 20 patients.

Saginaw Valley State University
A group of SVSU alumni have played a key role in their company's efforts to counter a shortage of equipment needed to protect doctors, nurses, and first responders in danger of catching the virus from patients. Duro-Last is manufacturing more than 40,000 protective gowns and 15,000 masks for some of the hardest-hit health care facilities in Michigan.

A team from the University of Michigan has invented a device that allows multiple patients to safely use the same ventilator and has quickly made it available across the country with help from former Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder.

A wide array of healthcare providers from UM-Flint's School of Nursing (SON) are on the front lines of the fight against COVID-19. Director of Graduate Nursing Affairs Connie Creech said the School of Nursing has adapted to best serve students and society during this time.

Wayne State University
Wayne State University public health major Deaja Todd works three 12-hour shifts each week on a hospital floor designated for victims of the COVID-19 pandemic. Todd's floor was converted to a COVID-19 unit near the end of March, and she provides crucial support to the health care professionals around her.

Western Michigan University
WMU's Bronson School of Nursing, which offers Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in nursing, shifted entirely to online course delivery this semester like every other university program, but is forging ahead within the College of Health and Human Services to prepare students for work during one of the most challenging times in health care.
