Haazinu: "Give Ear..."
Torah Text: Deuteronomy 32:1-52
Give ear sounds a bit Shakespearean, but this synonym for Shma, which means to hear and obey, is fitting for a people learning a song. After all, some musicians "play by ear." People with poor planning skills sometimes "play it by ear." When Israel left Egypt, they were still wet behind the ears, saved, but novices in faith. What is required to truly hear Moses' song, either in Deuteronomy or in the Book of Revelation?
According to Moses, the answer is moisturizer.
Rain Man
In this portion, the teaching of Adonai is compared to moisture:
"Give ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth. My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distill as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass: because I will publish the name of the LORD: ascribe ye greatness unto our God." (Dt 32:1-3 KJV)
As far as the heavens are above a human being, the Creator in His kindness sends the Word of Heaven to the man as life-giving moisture. The Heavenly doctrines drop like rain and distill like dew upon tender plants. The same doctrines of Elohim that are published in the Heavens are poured out upon the earth. The earth-bound doctrine of the serpent is no substitute!
For those who will give ear, Moshe assures that the Word is not too high in the Heavens for them to reach it, but it is even in their mouths and hearts.
It is not in heaven, that you should say, 'Who will go up to heaven for us to get it for us and make us hear it, that we may observe it?' Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, 'Who will cross the sea for us to get it for us and make us hear it, that we may observe it?' But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may observe it. (Dt 30: 13-14)
A tender heart can receive the pure doctrine. No one must die and go to heaven in order to understand and keep the Word. Understanding and obedience can be begun, learned, and walked on this earth by tender hearts. When Moshe died, it says literally in Hebrew that his moisture had not diminished! Deuteronomy 34:7 states, "...his eye was not dim, nor his natural[1] force abated."
The word translated as "natural force" is le-ach in Hebrew, meaning moisture.
Moses was not wet only behind the ears, but his entire body was moist with the Torah. Moses was green grass welcoming the dew of Heaven every morning. Ever wonder why Mark 6:39 emphasizes that Yeshua's audiences sat "by companies" on "green grass"?
And he commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the
green grass
.
This is not casual, but prophetic. The green grass represented the people, and the people soaked up Yeshua's doctrine, which fell like dew and rain on thirsty grass.
Likewise, Revelation 8:7 prophesies of green grass:
The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and
all
green grass
was burnt up
.
How many modern prophecy books overlook this foundation in the Torah? A prophecy class without a Torah class has no moisturizing dew or showers. The Song of Moses has two targets: the green grass, and the green grass that will be burned. The heart thirsty for Torah will remain very green in the day of trouble.
Is the rain and dew of the Torah still making your body moist as you physically age? Is your heart still tender and full of moisture? Do you still want to weep when you hear the Word of God? Sit on green grass, and BE the green grass giving ear to
Messiah Yeshua, who is in the Father and One with Him. Hear only one teaching, the dew and rain of Adonai, and you will leave this earth dripping wet. This is no time to be wet behind the ears or to play it by ear.
Give ear to the Song of Moses. Soak it up.
