A Message from our Founder, Trudie Lobban MBE, FRCP (Edin)
Arrhythmia Alliance, STARS and AF Association have never been more committed to providing information, support, education and awareness to those affected by or involved in the care of cardiac arrhythmias, syncope and atrial fibrillation.

STARS was established in 1993
Arrhythmia Alliance was established in 2004
AF Association was established in 2007

Our services have never been so in demand.

My dedicated team is working remotely, speaking with worried patients and concerned loved-ones, answering enquiries from healthcare professionals, assisting with access to mobile ECGs and remote monitoring as so many appointments and operations have been cancelled or postponed as well as enabling device companies to collaborate in order to help deliver services directly to patients as recommended by their doctors. Although this is one of the worst experiences that we have all lived through, some good things are emerging as a result.

  • We now recognise the importance of our healthcare professionals and the dedication and passion they have demonstrated, putting their own lives before others to care for the sick.

  • We will appreciate our friends and families more as we realise how much we miss and love them, and need them in our lives.

  • We will respect our teachers, shop workers, delivery workers and all those who provide essential services that previously we have probably taken for granted.

  • We now realise how much we need each other and how we must work together and appreciate each other.

This was the foundation of Arrhythmia Alliance – to collaborate, to form coalitions, to respect each other, to appreciate each other – Together We Are Strong.

We believe that it is our duty to ensure that our unique experiences and knowledge are heard as widely as possible and are recognised as vital components in fighting the pandemic.

Please stay safe, remain at home if you can, and together we will get through this.

Take care

Trudie

The New Threat: People may die if they do not seek urgent care!
Hospital reports show a large decrease in the number of emergency admissions around the world. Medical directors believe it may be that people are afraid of contracting coronavirus if they attend hospital.

However, stroke, heart attacks and other serious conditions still occur during this pandemic, and are still life-threatening. If you think it is an emergency, you need to call for help.

We have published a new resource which will help you to recognise heart attack, stroke and heart failure, and advises what you should do.
Caregiving From a Distance
As social distancing keeps families apart, many who care for a parent or loved one might be wondering how best to keep them safe. It is natural to worry about our loved ones, even more so when they live with a health condition. Based on current information, people with some heart conditions, including heart failure are more likely to experience complications with coronavirus. Here are a few ideas to help you keep in touch without visiting:
Stay in touch: Phone calls, letters, video calls, even a wave through a window can help someone feel less alone. Remind them to take their medications as prescribed, but also talk about normal things, for example; TV shows what they have eaten, and what they've been doing to keep busy.

Make a plan: If your loved one experiences symptoms of coronavirus, make sure they know that it is safe to contact their healthcare team for advice. Ensure they know that if they are showing symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain or dizziness, they should call emergency services.

Offer assistance: Offer to collect grocery shopping, prescriptions, or anything else they might need from outside the home. Always ensure you practice social distancing when delivering anything you might pick up for them. Leave items on the doorstep, knock the door then step back until they have collected the items. If they need to pay you for them, ask them to leave the money in an envelope on the doorstep for you to pick up when they have closed the door.
Talking To Young People About the Pandemic
Regardless of age, this may be a difficult time for children and young people. Some may react immediately, while others may show signs of difficulty later.

How a child or young person reacts can vary according to their age, how they understand information and communicate, their previous experiences and how they typically cope with stress. Adverse reactions may include thinking about their health or that of family and friends, fear, avoidance, problems sleeping, or physical symptoms such as stomach ache.
During this time, it is important that you support and take care of your family’s mental health – there are lots of things you can do, and additional support is available if you need it. Click the links below for advice.

Arrhythmia Alliance World Heart Rhythm Week
Throughout Arrhythmia Alliance World Heart Rhythm Week (WHRW) 2020, we want our followers, patients and supporters to be aware of their heart rhythm and to not ‘miss a beat’ when an opportunity arises to learn more about your heart rhythm.

We will be promoting wellness and mindfulness by encouraging everyone to have a ‘heart to heart’ this WHRW. If you are struggling with your condition, including diagnosis or treatment, don’t suffer alone. Talk to a friend or family member, you can also reach out to Arrhythmia Alliance where our patient services team are on hand to answer your questions and help with any concerns.
