Easter Sunday Sermon by Pastor Elaine Hewes
|
|

|
Bishop Thomas Brown writes:
Today, in our celebration of Jesus Christ’s victory over death, we are discovering this year maybe more than previous Easter Days our need for gentleness and kindness.
For me, the call to be gentle and kind means trusting that what we are doing right now — staying at home — is the best way for us to celebrate that Jesus Christ is risen from the dead.
All of us are eager to gather in our churches, to celebrate the Eucharist, and to be with our friends and families. Yet, in staying at home our collective gentleness and kindness will mean, literally, more of us shall live.

A Message from our Senior Warden
|
|
|
|
April 17, 2020
To our St. Brendan's family
:
What has evolved and transpired over the past several weeks has not only been enlightening, but spiritually uplifting, opening the door for unexpected blessings of gathering and worshipping together in a very new and different way. A record 40 worshippers joined in our Easter Sunday Morning Prayer service - with online technology enabling seasonal members from as far away as Great Britain as well as family and friends scattered across the country to join us. Despite the uncertainty and unease of the past several weeks, we have found respite in coming together “virtually” for worship, providing that much needed human and spiritual connection, and sense of renewal and hope - that is the promise of Easter.
Thank you for your support and faithfulness.
Lis Ingoldsby

Many thanks for everyone's contributions of time and talent made to enrich St. Brendan's ministries this week: to Pastor Elaine Hewes, Father Edward Dufresne and the Worship & Music Ministry for leading Morning Prayer on Easter.
We are so grateful to all the members of the Worship & Music Ministry for all the work they put into the planning, putting together the bulletins, rehearsing, and executing the services we all appreciated during Holy Week. We were also grateful for all of you who were able to participate in one or more of the services.
We extend our appreciation to the clergy who have served us these past several weeks for adapting to online services. Their flexibility and creativity have helped us maintain meaningful worship.

Silent Meditation - Monday, 4:30 p.m.
Be still, and know that I am God (
Psalm 46
)
Share a reading, prayer, or poem and then sit in silence for twenty minutes of meditation or silent prayer.
This is a good time to experience sitting in silence with others. There is something very grounding about it. The group somehow provides support and encouragement in the practice. Please click the link below by 4:20 to join us.

News from the Outreach Ministry
|
|
|
|
At the Outreach meeting on April 9th, the ministry designated $500 to the Deer Isle Schools to support the delivery of approximately 300 boxes of breakfast, lunch and dinner for the nine days of spring break for families in Deer Isle, Stonington and Sedgwick. Ministry members are doing research on other entities which may have sudden, unexpected costs related to the Covid-19 crisis as well as other ongoing needs. They hope to vote on further allocations at their next meeting on May 7th at 10 am. They welcome your input.

We continue today to celebrate the Lord’s resurrection, a celebration which will last for fifty days in all (and which is celebrated again every Sunday throughout the year). The Gospel reading begins with the first Easter Day when Jesus appeared in the evening to the disciples and gave them his Spirit. The story continues with his appearance the following Sunday when Thomas met the Lord and confessed his faith. It concludes with words for us: “Blessed are they who have not seen, yet believe.”
On the Sundays of Easter, the first reading is always from the Acts of the Apostles. In today’s
reading from Acts, we hear a portion of Peter’s sermon on the Day of Pentecost proclaiming the
resurrection. God has raised Jesus; and Peter and the other Apostles are witnesses of the
resurrection.
The second lesson on the Sundays of Easter this year comes from Peter’s first epistle. This is a
sermon on the meaning of baptism. Today the message is about our rebirth into new life in God
as we died and rose with Christ in baptism. Nevertheless, in the world we will still have trials
and persecutions, Peter tells us, but in them, our faith is strengthened and purified.
As we gather as Church to celebrate the Lord’s resurrection, we find the living presence of Jesus
in his Word, in the sacraments, and in our life as the community of the Body of Christ. We find
ourselves made by the Holy Spirit into a community that is the visible and living sign of the risen
Christ.
