June 2018

Welcome to  Age-Friendly Englewood, a project of 50+ nonprofits,  civic
organizations and houses of worship working with  City  government
-- as well as individual residents --  to help  make
Englewood, NJ,
a fantastic place for older adults
to age
in place with dignity and independence.

An age-friendly Englewood is  great for people of all ages!
Doo-Wop Sell Out!!

We're delighted to report that the Night of Doo-Wop & Rock n' Roll that we sponsored at BergenPAC on May 20 with AARP-NJ was not only a complete sell-out -- it was fantastic!  The crowd thrilled to mega-hits from the 50s and 60s, singing along with glee. At right is Janet Sharma, Age-Friendly Englewood's coordinator, with the inestimable Kenny Vance. (His hit I've Had It  topped her list in 11th grade, 1961.)
Be Prepared!  Not Scared!

Hurricane season is here, and if you've been here a while, you will recall the effects of Superstorm Sandy!

Ready.gov is an excellent website that also has a section with information specifically to help seniors be ready for any disaster.
Here it is!

Here's an insightful article about how to find and pay for the services you or your parents may need.
Focus Group in Spanish

Age-Friendly Englewood is partnering with Bergen Family Center to host a focus group on June 13 to help determine the needs of Spanish-speaking older adult residents of Englewood. The program will beheld at Noches de Colombia,  90 W. Palisade Avenue, at 9:30 AM. The first 25 Spanish-speaking older adults who participate will receive a $25 Shoprite gift card.

Please pass this information along to your Spanish-speaking friends, colleagues and relatives.
Cheers to "CHEER"

The CHEER Program has a new home at the Bergen Volunteer Center, where volunteers help   isolated, frail elderly people retain their independence. Trained CHEER aides and volunteers visit weekly to help with shopping, errands, laundry, light housekeeping, etc. They forge lasting relationships with the isolated elders, offering companionship and, whenever possible, creating opportunities for the isolated elders to be engaged in their communities. O ften, this type of minimal service is all that is needed to help an elderly person continue to remain safely in the comfort of home.

And...the service is FREE!  There are no income limits, but the program is based on need.  Call 201-488-0041, ext. 315 for information.
