Live United - United Way

More than 800 people from 70 local businesses, schools and organizations volunteered their time to do great things for our community on Wednesday, September 20, 2017 as United Way of Central West Virginia hosted its 12th annual Day of Caring event.

Volunteers representing people of all ages brought the 'Give a Helping Hand' fundraising and service campaign to life! They were paired with local non-profit agencies in Boone, Clay, Kanawha, Logan, and Putnam counties and assisted with 65 hands-on projects such as painting, cleaning, landscaping, construction, and installing Born Le arning Trails.

Margaret Ann O'Neal, President of United Way of Central West Virginia said, "Day of Caring is one of the largest gatherings of volunteers in our state. The fact that over 800 volunteers and over 65 projects can come together for a day and truly GIVE A HELPING HAND to others is outstanding.  Our volunteers often perform tasks that our agency partners simply could not afford to do on their own.  Important work is accomplished, money is saved, team building happens and fun is had by one and all.  Our gratitude goes out to everyone involved in organizing this event, especially the awesome staff of United Way of Central West Virginia."

Kanawha and Putnam County volunteers attended the Day of Caring kick-off rally at  Appalachian Power Park with  Former Mountaineer coach Don Nehlen and Marshall coach Bob Pruett as guest speakers!  Kick-off rallies also took place at the same time in Boone, Clay and Logan counties. Participants then went to their project sites to begin their volunteer work from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Day of Caring promotes the value of volunteerism and demonstrates that we can work together to create positive change in the lives of children, families and seniors.  Community Service Director Lisa Hudnall said, "We are so very thankful for the hundreds of dedicated volunteers cheerfully willing to help out.  Our theme is 'Give a Helping Hand' and each volunteer, whether a 5th grade class from Mountain View Elementary School or a young at heart senior with the RSVP program will truly make a difference for our community."
