Dear Friends of The Blue Purl,

We know you are going to think that perhaps the quarantine is getting to us. Maybe you are right, but oh, come on, sheep are so, so relaxing and cute.

So today, we share with you our version of a knitters Yule Log, Relax With Sheep , hours and hours of sheep grazing in a California vineyard. (Thanks for this one Maura.)

Why, you may ask, are we doing this?

Sheep produce wool, which is how we make yarn... That is true, but there is more to it. Life has changed, for now, and likely into the future. At a time of crisis, we tend to focus on the risk and fear.

But disruption to our routine can have a positive effect too, forcing us to shift out of autopilot and to rethink how we use our time (our most precious resource.)
This pandemic has required all of us to slow down and (to lean on a cliché) stop and smell the roses. Or in this case, stop and watch the sheep. Seriously, there is something meditative to this video, to the sheep meandering through the rows of grapes. There's grass munching and baah's, a little wind, birds. It's all so soothing, it’s our reality television, or therapy. And sometimes it just makes you chuckle, "am I really watching sheep?"

We hope you all are well. That this time forced at home, while being difficult, is perhaps fulfilling. Perhaps you are rediscovering something that you had lost in your busy life.

We like to think that we are there for you too, not just now, but always, with encouragement, support, yarn and friendly, sincere instruction.
How can we help while you are at home?

We are doing curbside pickup on Thursday and Friday and our online site is up selling kits, with more soon to come. Let us know please, if there is more that you need, or would like, and we will try as best we can to serve you.

In the meantime, stop and smell the roses…. Or in this case, watch and listen to the sheep. We think it will make you smile :)

Yarn & Projects - Lots of Spring Wraps
This Week for your viewing pleasure...
Since NJ Woolwalk has been postponed - the Trunk Shows we have in store are lonely. We're putting the Fibre Company shows in the window. So if you come for curbside you'll have something to look at! Below are a few Fibr e Co. Waves Collection shawl patterns. They are a group of 6 patterns from 3 different designers known for their beautiful shawl designs in the Fibre Co. super soft, sport weight, Road to China yarn. Enjoy!
These two are by designer Helen Stewart. Tobermory " Its easy lace and eyelets were planned to thoughtfully showcase two colours of the gorgeous Road to China Light yarn" For the Kelso shawl - "captures the different textures of river and town, with wonderful three-coloured stripes, flickering eyelets and simple lace. This elongated triangle shawl is knit from the top down with increases made at the edges."
Falls of Foyer by Melanie Be rg " This shawl is named after a waterfall called Falls of Foyers that feeds into the famous deep freshwater Loch Ness in the Highlands of Scotland.
It is worked down and out from the centre of the top edge. There is an option to make a nice stretchy upper neck edge by adding a yarn over
after the very first stitch of every row (RS and WS) and then drop it again on the following row."
Quick Ear Protectors - use with masks
This is a quick free cochet pattern project for people who have to wear masks all day - You can hook the elastic around the button - not your ears! And here's knitted version :) Thanks Kathleen!
Kodilla with a Freia

We'll need this for the beach this summer!

3 Suggestions for Spring!
We asked Jen for some suggestions of good spring patterns from her collections. Here ya go 3 beautiful fingering weight shawls! Above is Dappled Sunlight : " Dappled Sunlight is a rectangular scarf or wrap with angled ends. A medley of eyelet and mesh stitches flit across its surface, reminding me of drops of sunlight filtering through summer leaves. These playful changes in stitch pattern will keep your project entertaining from beginning to end.
The finished piece is fully reversible, a breeze to wear."
" Pisac is named for a charming town in Peru’s Sacred Valley region, a keepsake of my visit to the artisan market there. Pisac is knitted in fingering-weight yarn from the top down. It is a medley of reversible textured stitch patterns that complement one another and are simple to work, finished with a delicate picot edging."
" Linway is a relaxing, reversible knit that gives you the chance to play with four of your favorite colors.

This fingering-weight shawl begins with a simple garter-stitch triangle. When the triangle is deep enough, short-row wedges are added on both sides, outlined with delicate eyelets. These wedges add color and give the shawl a generous wingspan, ideal for wrapping up in. Linway finishes with an eye-catching knitted-on lace edging that is a breeze to memorize."
MORE COLORS for Casapinka's Olive Pink
To help out LYS during this time of pandemic closures, designer Casapinka gave us a couple patterns to distribute free with purchase. She gave us a limited supply (online codes) for the Olive Pink wrap & Look, Squirrel little Cardi to give us a hand.... thank you Casapinka!
The kits are in our online shop ( and the new colors pictured will be there soon!) for the Olive | Pink shawl - it's a new one from Casapinka and here is her write up. ... " It’s time for some pandemic knitting! Whether you’re on lockdown or not, let’s get knitting something fun and relaxing that will take your mind off your toilet paper woes." - she has a wicked sense of humor!
Millie
Liz is w orking on this cute Millie sweater.  It’s a very simple deep raglan in stockinette using fingering weight yarn
"Millie is a boxy pullover designed for ease and comfort without too much bulk or width. Lightweight but still cozy warm, the classic stockinette stitch is great for all of those speckled skeins you love so much...a simply written and easy pattern that is great for beginners but pretty enough to keep even expert knitters intrigued!"
We Love This Sequence Wrap | Throw
While we had to postpone Lori Versaci's visit, we can still enjoy her patterns! This is perfect if you find yourself at home for awhile... Farm-to-Skein Colorwork Shawl/Throw is a gorgeous example of sequence knitting. Originally in Making Magazine - since then she also has the instruction to make it a baby throw.
