Presented at the 2018 ASCO Annual Meeting, research that included patients from Georgetown Lombardi showed that a genetic test can help prevent women with the most common subtype of breast cancer from unnecessarily receiving chemotherapy.

A new award recognizing staff at Georgetown University Medical Center for compassion, achievement, respect, inspiration and service was bestowed upon Melissa Layman, deputy director of research development services, at the May 23 GUMC Community Meeting.

Recipients of grants from Partners in Research, a program that brings together scientists and science-minded members of the community, told funders how their support has helped them push their science forward at a recent research showcase.

About 80 attendees participated in CENTILE's Fifth Annual Colloquium for GUMC Educators in the Health Professions, which included a workshop, oral sessions, posters and a plenary on trends in health professions education.

Phyllis Magrab, MD, professor of pediatrics and director of Georgetown's Center for Child and Human Development,  received the American University of Afghanistan's International Public Service Award for her commitment to improving the lives of the Afghan people, specifically Afghan women. Advocating for the recognition of human dignity for all people, the free and open exchange of ideas, and the role of women in civil society, Magrab serves as the vice chair of the US-Afghan Women's Council.

The slides and handouts from the May 23 GUMC community meeting that included recommendations by the medical center structure task force, a finance presentation, a report from the Faculty Philanthropy Advisory Committee, a research update and more, are available on the GUMC Engagement website.
