AIR QUALITY UPDATE AND HOMECOMING EVENTS UPDATE
Thursday, Oct. 12, 2017
11 a.m.

The poor air quality continues in the Tri-Valley and is expected to worsen heading into the weekend. All of our school sites are implementing inclement weather conditions today.

District and DHS Leadership are in the process of making difficult decisions regarding DHS Homecoming activities. We have consulted this morning with experts from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District to solicit information and advice and are monitoring the situation closely. Safety is our top priority.

At this point, we will NOT hold the Homecoming Carnival Friday at DHS. It will be rescheduled for May 4, 2018. A decision about the status of the Carnival was necessary this morning because of significant financial and logistical implications with setting up the food vendors and carnival games. Postponing now allowed us to transfer our deposit to a later date and give our students and our community the great event that they deserve.

As for the dance, we can confirm that the Homecoming Dance WILL go on as scheduled on Saturday night as it is an indoor activity.

We must make a decision regarding the Homecoming Parade by the end of the day today and we will make the decision public as soon as possible. Updates will be posted on our website and sent out via email.

A decision about the status of the JV and Varsity football games scheduled for tomorrow will be made likely by tomorrow late-morning, based on the most current air quality conditions and consultation with Air Quality Management officials, who have said they will make themselves available to us tomorrow morning to give us the latest information.

We appreciate the guidance of the experts that we have called as we know this is a busy time for them. We also appreciate the support of our community, as we make decisions that we wish we did not have to make.

In the meantime, our thoughts and community support are still with all of those communities who have lost so much in this terrible tragedy.
