Stowe's War casts actress Susan Chase as Harriet Beecher Stowe and actor Rick Bonnette as Mark Twain. The play brings two of America's most consequential authors together in a fictional test of wills.
"So, you are the little woman who wrote the book that started this Great War!" This remark, attributed to Abraham Lincoln, may not be historically accurate, but the perception that Harriet Beecher Stowe's book,
Uncle Tom's Cabin, fanned the flames of our Civil War certainly is!
Stowe's War begins twenty years after the Civil War, with Harriet struggling with the loss of her husband, two sons, and her health. At age 74, her "quirky" behavior has become something more than just neighborhood gossip.
In a twist of fiction, her friend and neighbor, Mark Twain, seeks her help to finish his master work,
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
In her time, Stowe was universally both revered and reviled. Today, she is merely ignored. And while Twain may be beloved for his wit and humor, his moral evolution seems to escape the modern reader. It can be argued that Stowe and Twain have never been more relevant! With Stowe's War, their genius will emerge again, timely and timeless.

HC DrugFree'sConvenient Drive-Thru "Sharps"* and Medication Collection will be held on Saturday, October 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Wilde Lake Village Center parking lot near The UPS Store and Slayton House.*(Sharps: needles, syringes and EpiPens)
Looking to get rid of old, unwanted, or recalled EpiPens, needles, syringes and medications all in one quick trip without getting out of your vehicle? Join your friends at HC DrugFree's quick and convenient drive-thru collection held twice a year. Just look for volunteers directing traffic around the parking lot. Howard County Police will receive and secure your medications for proper disposal and medical staff will handle your sharps for proper recycling.
Parents and grandparents, are you your child's drug dealer? Will your child's first experimentation be with legally prescribed pain medication found in your home? Keep medications away from your children (and adults visiting or working in your home). Three out of four people using heroin began with the use of prescription medication found in their own home or the home of a family member or friend. HC DrugFree's Teen Advisory Council (TAC) will meet on Monday, October 16 and Monday, November 6 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. TAC is open to all Howard County high school students and community service hours are available. Monthly meetings are held at The Barn (Teen Center) in the Oakland Mills Village Center. Free pizza is provided. Teens and parents must complete the registration form found on the Teen Advisory Council page at

50 + Expo
Explore preparedness, information and education as they relate to healthy aging at Howard County's 19th annual 50+EXPO on Friday, October 20, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at Wilde Lake High School. Admission is $1 and free parking and shuttle transportation are available from the lower level Sears parking lot at The Columbia Mall.
This year's 50+EXPO features over 160 vendors and exhibitors. Attendees to the 50+EXPO can take advantage of free flu vaccines and free health screenings at the onsite health fair. Back by popular demand, the Capitol Steps return to the Jim Rouse Theatre for one show at 11:00 a.m. Tickets are available while quantities last; a $5 donation is requested per ticket.

Save The Date: Pizza With Santa
Pizza with Santa will be held on Sat, Dec. 16 from 11am - 1pm at Kahler Hall. This holiday tradition is especially for Harper's Choice residents. Space is limited. The event is free, but tickets are required. Tickets are available now at Kahler Hall.
Guests will enjoy pizza, special holiday crafts, and hearing Santa read 'Twas the Night Before Christmas.' Bring your camera and enjoy a special family photo opportunity with Santa!
We encourage attendees to bring one non-perishable food item per ticket on December 16. Donations will be given to the Howard County Food Bank.

Renovating your Property? Some Rules to Remember
As homeowners, we must ensure that our contractors abide by the community rules and regulations. Here are a few tips and reminders:
If you are completing renovations on your property and your contractor orders a dumpster, it must be placed in your driveway and a permit is required. Contact Howard County Inspections, Licenses and Permits at 410-313-2455 for more information. Dumpsters are generally not permitted to be parked anywhere on the county roadway.
When work is complete for the day, be sure the contractor leaves the job site neat and tidy with construction materials and debris stored out of sight.
If you get a discount to place a sign in your yard during construction, a small yard sign is permitted so long as it is removed when the work is complete.
Live in a Townhouse community? Be good neighbors and ask your contractors to park in the overflow spaces or vacate the close-in spaces before 5 pm.
No dumping in community Open Space. All debris and material from construction must be hauled away by the contractor or the owner.
Keep Leaves Out of Streets and Storm Drains to Prevent Flooding
Do you have leaves and leaf litter in the street and the street curb gutters in front of your house? Please note that it is a violation of County Code to blow, pile or sweep leaves into the public roadway. "A person may not obstruct, damage, or destroy public property." [Title 18, Subtitle 2, Section 18.205, subsection (b1).]
Help prevent flooding from storm drain clogs and pollution to streams, lakes and the Chesapeake Bay by cleaning up the street gutter in front of your home. Mulch those leaves into your lawn or place collected leaves in containers or PAPER bags and put out curbside for pickup on your regular recycling day.

Architectural Committee Meetings
Changes made to the exterior of homes in Harper's Choice require approval of the Village Architectural Committee (AC).
The AC will meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month at 7:30 PM to review applications.
The deadline to submit applications for approval is two weeks prior to the next meeting date.
