PTSA Update

PTSA Newsletter for the week of Sept. 23, 2018

Connect With Us
Lake Nona Middle School

Thank you so much to everyone that participated in one of our two Open House events last week. Both evenings were hugely successful! This is credit to our dedicated students, faculty, and staff that spent a lot of time preparing to make sure the classrooms and campus was ready for the community. Thank you again to everyone for their hard work - it really paid off.

This past Friday wrapped up the sixth school week of the year already. As such, we released 1st quarter Progress Reports. If you have a student attending Lake Nona, please take a few minutes to review their results with them. And should you find additional help is needed in a given content area, please take advantage of one of our tutoring opportunities as soon as possible (below). In fact, this coming Wednesday we will be kicking off our Wednesday Enrichment School at 3:05 PM. We want all of our Knights to achieve their potential and our tutoring program can be of real help as needed.

Finally, you might notice that several school Spirit Nights are planned over the next few weeks. Kindly remember that these special events are designed to assist our PTSA which at Lake Nona Middle, does a great deal of good with their budget. Our PTSA is involved in important events that directly support our students and teachers from August through May so please, if you are out and about one of those evenings, consider these locations.

Many thanks for your continued support and involvement. Have a wonderful first week of fall!

In Knights Honor,

Stephanie R. Jackson, M. Ed.
Principal, Lake Nona Middle School

Knight Open House
Highlights from last week's Open House events

What a great turn out at Open House on Tuesday and Thursday nights! It was so nice to meet several new families and of course see many of our returning parents. We enjoyed seeing you again and having the opportunity to share the learning that goes on in the classroom. We hope that it was informative, as well as fun for you!

Knight Vital Signs

Making sense of the chart: The chart shows the average number of students tardy per week in terms of those late for school vs. those late between classes. The figures are based upon LNMS    averages from the last 4 weeks in a row.

There is virtually no difference between students late to school per week by grade level running at about 19 per week per grade ( blue). However, those late to class is another story ( red). There we see as few as 14 students late to class per week for our 7th grade Knights to about 30 late to class per week for our 8th graders . . . a difference of over 2X. On a combined basis, it is our 8th graders that lead the school in weekly tardies averaging nearly 50 per week of both types. In this instance, not a figure to be #1 with and an area needing improvement.

Knight Rigor in the Classroom

Physical Science with Mr. Kotowski
Mr. Kotowski's physical science class students used toy cars running down a ramp with a spark timer to model motion using position, velocity, and acceleration.

Sixth Grade Science with Dr. Ali
Dr. Ali's 6th grade science class took an imaginary fossil hunt. Dr. Ali read a script and the students removed paper fossils of some unknown creature, only a few at a time. Each time the students attempted to reconstruct the creature, and each time their interpretation changed as new pieces were found. Students learned that science can be uncertain.

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards
Recognition opportunity for our Knights . . .

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is the United States' largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service.

Created in 1995 by Prudential and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the program honors middle level and high school students for outstanding service to others at the local, state and national level.

Thus far, it has recognized more than 125,000 young people who've made a difference - and inspired countless others to consider how they might contribute to their communities.

Knight Athletics
Soccer Update

Our soccer teams beat South Creek Monday. The boys won 1-0 and girls won 2-0. We had to reschedule our games for Wednesday to Friday due to lightning. Playoffs will start Monday and the 2018 playoff brackets will be coming out very soon!

Thank you,

Irimar Hernandez, Athletic Director
