"Inside Camulos Depot with Jean-Guy Dube - Talk and Book Signing"
Jean-Guy Dubé, author of Railroad Depots: A Southern Pacific Collection, will share information about the Rancho Camulos Depot along with other research findings about vintage Southern California railroad depots.
Awarded the national Leicester B. Holland Prize for 2017 by the National Park Service and Library of Congress, professional draftsman and apprenticing architect Jean-Guy Dubé has researched and written about Southern Pacific depots since 1983. This book features 48 black and white blueprint drawings by Dubé spanning many decades, styles, and subject matter. Each blueprint, from the first tape measurement to the finished product took several months to complete. This is the first compilation of his drawings. While his work primarily includes standard and unique depots, this book also includes a handful of individual railroad buildings and a few non-railroad buildings.
Each blueprint includes noted floor plans, elevations, some sections, and has an accompanying history. There are some previously unpublished black and white historical photos while others come from various historical societies, museums, individuals, as well as the author.

The free, family-friendly party for the community takes its cue from the Museum's popular exhibition, Dreaming the Universe: The Intersection of Science, Fiction, & Pasadena. Party-goers are welcome to dress as their favorite science fiction characters, or come as you are.
Festivities begin at 1:00 pm. The official cake cutting ceremony with Mayor Terry Tornek, City Council members, and other VIPs is scheduled for 2:00 pm, with special thanks to Signature Cake Sponsor, Baja Ranch Supermarket.

"The Pioneers of
Eagle Rock"
After the Rancho San Rafael was divided, Benjamin Dreyfus was awarded the hilly area north of downtown Los Angeles known as Eagle Rock Valley. By 1911, this farming community had rapidly grown into a city. The Los Angeles Railway made downtown LA a trolley ride away, and continued growth led to Eagle Rock's consolidation with the city in 1923.
Today, Eagle Rock is one of LA's most distinctive neighborhoods, and a pride instilled by early settlers remains here. Our speakers for this program are Eric Warren and Frank Parello. Their book will be available for purchase.

"Curated Tour of Florence Bixby's Gardens at the Rancho"

There's no better time to enjoy the Rancho's nationally recognized gardens which were planned and executed in the early decades of the 20th century under the careful guidance of owner Florence Green Bixby. She utilized outstanding landscape architects and plantsmen of the era, including the Olmsted Brothers, William Hertrich, Florence Yoch, Paul J. Howard, and Allen Chickering.
Your guide will be the Rancho's own historic gardens expert, Janet Brown Becker. Ms. Becker has a Master's degree in Landscape Architecture with an emphasis in California garden design and history from UC Berkeley. She studied under the Rancho's preeminent landscape architectural consultants, Russell Beatty and David Streatfield. Ms. Becker oversees the historic interpretation, curatoria documentation, and horticultural integrity of the Rancho's gardens.
Important Details:
The tour is appropriate for adults and interested teens. Please allow 2 1/2 hours for your tour. Allow more time if you would like to visit the Barnyard, Rancho Center and Gift Shop. Visitors will be on their feet, standing and walking for the entire tour. Comfortable shoes are a must, preferably with closed toes. A hat and drinking water are advisable. Reservations are not refundable, but may be transferred. Upon arrival, please assemble outside the Rancho Gift Shop.

Join in the fun at the 26th annual Heritage Square Summer Concert Series in historic downtown Oxnard. The concert series will run from June 15 through September 14, 2018. Music lovers can enjoy 12 family-friendly performances every Friday from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at 715 S. A St.
Each night will feature a live performance by a band representing a genre ranging from old school to classic rock, to Latin jazz to rhythm and blues, and more.

There is a limit of two tickets per person, and seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis. No reservations will be accepted. Ticket sales begin on-site at 5 p.m. in the main plaza on the day of the event. There will be a total of 80 individual seats in the main plaza for sale each night. Tickets are expected to sell out, so concert-goers are encouraged to arrive early to make their purchase.

California Oil Museum
"A Closer Look, American Involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq"
The Santa Paula High School Human Services Academy sophomore class of 2020 has interviewed several Veterans to get their perspective on America's involvement in the middle-east since the War on Terrorism began in 2001.
The students examined various components to the wars, from the beginning stages to the major players involved, as well as a closer look at the soldiers who put their lives on the line day in and day out. The research and Veteran interviews culminated in a museum-quality exhibit that will be on display in the California Oil Museum from May 19 through August 26, 2018.

"A Resource Precious & Rare: Development of Water Resources in the Crescenta-Canada Valley, 1875-1955"
Visit the Lanterman House in La Cañada Flintridge to enjoy a special exhibition about the local history of water use. Featuring rare photographs, manuscripts, and artifacts, the exhibition is installed throughout the historic 1915 house.
Learn how the unique geology of the San Gabriel foothills made the development and distribution of water resources uniquely challenging for early residents, and how they worked together to overcome those challenges.

"A Woman's Contribution / Civil War In Films May / June Bi-monthly exhibit"
Memorial Day or Decoration Day was started in the South during the Civil War as women decorated soldier's graves. The more than 600,000 soldiers of both sides who died in the Civil War meant that burial and memorization took on new cultural significance. Under the leadership of women during the war, an increasingly formal practice of decorating graves had taken shape. In 1865, the federal government began creating national military cemeteries for the Union War dead.
The Civil War remains the bloodiest war in American history and still echoes in contemporary US culture and politics. The war has provided source material for a rich variety of different films, including the iconic Birth Of A Nation, The General, and Gone With the Wind, as well as numerous other award-winning classics such as Glory, The Horse Soldiers, The Outlaw Josey Wales, and Dances with Wolves. Many books and classic literature went on to the big screen, including The Red Badge of Courage, The Killer Angels (Gettysburg), and Gods and Generals. Come see some original movies props from Glory and Gettysburg.

"Man-of-War: Adventures Aboard a Fighting Ship"
Staged aboard His Majesty's sixth-rate British Royal Navy frigate, HMS Surprise, the new exhibit transports visitors back in time 200 years to the wooden world of the fighting sailing ship. This interactive exhibit encourages visitors of all ages to learn what it was like to live as cabin boy, marine, sailor, midshipman, surgeon, and captain on a "man-of-war" from the age of sail.
According to Dr. Raymond Ashley, Ph.D., K.C.I., President/CEO of the Maritime Museum of San Diego, Man-of-War is an adventure the entire family can enjoy without leaving the dock. "
Walk the length of her gun deck, sit in the captain's cabin, visit the surgeon's berth, and stand at the helm. You'll see and hear the sights and sounds of dramatic battles at sea, with Surprise's fearsome guns answering those of her enemies." Dr. Ashley adds, "Much like all of our interior and interactive exhibits on display throughout the Museum's historic fleet, this experience aboard HMS Surprise is free and included with general admission to the Maritime Museum of San Diego."
HMS Surprise is a replica of that most famous ship in author Patrick O'Brien's series of historical novels chronicling the naval career of Captain Jack Aubrey. In 2003 she was featured in the 20th Century Fox epic drama "Master and Commander,' starring Russell Crowe in the role of Aubrey. Since then the Surprise has been part of the Maritime Museum of San Diego's fleet of historic and replica vessels.
Maritime Museum's Librarian, Curator and Collections Manager Kevin Sheehan, Ph.D. adds, "we encourage visitors to learn about some of the curious expressions that sailors used to describe their life on board, find out how to fire one of the guns, and experience the thrill for adventure that called so many to this life, despite its hardships."

Not Genghis the brutal barbarian of Western history books, but Genghis the great civilizer, law-maker, and democratize, whose empire brought each of these innovations to the West. Come d
iscover the man behind the legend as the most comprehensive exhibition of Genghis Khan and his treasures invades the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, its only Southern California stop on an international tour that has drawn more than a million visitors.
Opening on February 16, 2018, the start of the Mongolian New Year, this special exhibition presents a more complete image of the legendary leader whom Time Magazine and CNN named "The Man of the Millennium." As the exhibit strikingly portrays, Genghis's reputation as the greatest conqueror is well-deserved. He dominated three times more land in his lifetime than either Julius Caesar or Alexander the Great, a conquest attested to by the formidable array of swords, bows, arrows, saddles, and armor included on display in Genghis Khan. In fact, the historic exhibition showcases hundreds of artifacts from Genghis's 13th century Empire, the largest such collection ever to tour.
However, as visitors discover, Genghis not only created the nation of Mongolia and its written language, but his lineage established the modern borders of nations from India to Iran, Korea to China; and opened the trade routes that united East and West forever after.
Curated and developed by dinosaur expert Don Lessem, the exhibition features more than 200 spectacular objects on display, including rare and sophisticated weapons, costumes, jewels, ornaments, instruments, and numerous other fascinating relics and elaborate artifacts from 13th-century Mongolia. The exhibition features loans by private collectors from Mongolia, Azerbaijian, and the United States.

"Setting the Scene: Hollywood Animators and Background Painters in the Santa Paula Civic Collection"
The Santa Paula Art Museum has gone Hollywood with its current exhibition, Setting the Scene: Hollywood Animators and Background Painters in the Santa Paula Civic Collection. The exhibit features fine art paintings from the famous Santa Paula Civic Collection by artists who worked behind-the-scenes at Disney, MGM, Warner Bros., and 20th Century Fox during the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Since the 1930s, film and animation studios have played a leading role in the lives of many California artists and have been influential in the development of what is recognized as the "California Style." Nowhere is this more evident than within the Santa Paula Civic Collection, a historic collection of artworks established in 1937 and owned by the City of Santa Paula. Setting the Scene displays some of the best works from Santa Paula's collection. While the art on exhibit was not created for the movies, it includes personal works by Disney background painters like Al Dempster, Basil Davidovich, and Charles Payzant, who lent their talents to animated features such as Fantasia, Pinocchio, Peter Pan, and Sleeping Beauty. The exhibit also stars artists like George Gibson, once head of MGM's scenic design department and lead scenic artist for The Wizard of Oz; and Emil Kosa, Jr., who designed the original 20th Century Fox logo and won an Academy Award in 1964 for his work on Cleopatra.
The colorful exhibition explores the relationship between the artists' fine art paintings and their commercial work for film. Viewers can learn more about the history of painting in motion pictures, the process of creating an animated feature, special effects, and the people behind some of the most iconic movie scenes ever filmed.
Visitors to the exhibit are also invited to write or illustrate a scene from their own story to add to a community-made storyboard. Setting the Scene is on view through June 17, 2018.

Camp Roberts Museum
"New Military Exhibits"
Camp Roberts opened as the U.S. Army's largest basic training installation in mid-1941, just prior to us entering World War II. For the last 30 years, the volunteers at the Camp Roberts Historical Museum have been preserving and relating the camp's long and important role in our nation's defense, through WWII and the Korean War, and up to its current role as the main training site for the California Army National Guard. The camp also hosts training units from all the other US military components, regular and reserve, as well as those from allied nations.
There are always new museum exhibits for guests to enjoy. Since the big expansion of the large Afghanistan Exhibit, museum volunteers have completed an Army field mess exhibit, a Vietnam era field hospital exhibit, and are building a new exhibit on helicopter training close to their Cobra attack helicopter. They are also hard at work on expanding and upgrading the large picnic and event center at the Main Museum. It is the largest Army museum complex in California and the state's official military museum. Enjoy the Museum's featured history video, research library, gift shop, and the Wall of Fame (icluding Robert Mitchum, Steve Allen, Bob Newhart, Red Skelton, and William Holden).

Pleasant Valley Historical Society Museum
"Hello! -- Antique Phones Exhibit & Silent Auction"
Bill Doctorman, who recently died at the age of 89, had an extensive collection of historic phones. He willed his collection to the Pleasant Valley Historical Society (PVHS). Receipts found for phones that were purchased in his home state of Illinois indicate that he had been accumulating them for most of his lifetime.
The PVHS museum currently has about 100 phones on display from the late 1880s through the 1980s. Included are the wooden (usually oak) farm phones of various styles through the candlestick and art deco phones. It is fascinating to see how creative American manufacturers could be. The exhibit also includes European phones that illustrate the standardization of style throughout the world.
The Museum received over 200 phones from the Doctorman legacy and will be having a silent auction offering the excess to the community. Stop by to see this unusual exhibit which includes a display for young children to experience "dialing" a telephone.

California Oil Museum
"When Dams Fail: Lessons Learned from St. Francis and Other Notable Incidents"
Three minutes before midnight on March 12, 1928, the St. Francis Dam collapsed, sending 12.4 billion gallons of water downstream, killing over 400 people and forever changing the communities in its 54-mile destructive path. Floodwaters traveled down San Francisquito Canyon to the Santa Clarita Valley, then turned west following the Santa Clara River south of Piru, Fillmore, and Santa Paula, through unincorporated Ventura County, out to the Pacific Ocean.
In remembrance of the 90th anniversary of the St. Francis Dam disaster, the California Oil Museum will exhibit "When Dams Fail: Lessons Learned from St. Francis and Other Notable Incidents." This exhibit covers more than a century of time and provides a look into several of America's dreadful dam disasters, the impact on the lives of those affected, and the lessons learned through investigative research and retrospective evaluations.

Dreaming the Universe: The Intersection of Science, Fiction, & Southern California explores the history of science fiction in Southern California from the 1930s to the 1980s, and how it interacted with the advances of science, the changes in technology, and shifts in American society. Curated by Nick Smith, former president of Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society, the exhibition brings together an unusual range of artifacts, fine and graphic arts, books, ephemera, and photographs.

Visitors are invited to follow Agueda Agata, a Salinan woman born in 1673, as she traces the history of her family in the Central California villages of San Simeon and Jolon.

"Taminaru: A Day in the Life of a Japanese American Fishing Village"
One hundred years ago, Terminal Island, in the Port of Los Angeles, was the home of a thriving community of 3,000 Japanese American fishermen and cannery workers. Using the skills honed in their ancestral home of Wakayama-ken prefecture, the Japanese Americans' labor contributed to the phenomenal success of the West Coast fishing industry. After Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, the Terminal Islanders were evicted and sent to internment camps. Today very little traces remain of a once-thriving community.
The exhibit Taminaru, curated by Naomi Hirahara and Tara Fansler, documents a typical day in the life of the Terminal Islanders.

The Vietnam War was the second-longest war in United States history, after the war in Afghanistan.
Commitments to the people and government of South Vietnam to keep communist forces from overtaking them reached back into the Truman Administration. Eisenhower placed military advisers and CIA operatives in Vietnam, and John F. Kennedy sent American soldiers to Vietnam. Lyndon Johnson ordered the first real combat by American troops, and Richard Nixon concluded the war.
Despite the decades of resolve, billions and billions of dollars, nearly 60,000 American lives and many more injuries, the United States failed to achieve its objectives. Learn about Montebello's Reggie J. Rodriguez who made the ultimate sacrifice and is honored by having a city park named after him.

Pleasant Valley Historical Society & Museum
Free: "Allis-Chalmers WD Row Crop Tractor"
The Pleasant Valley Historical Society & Museum has received a working tractor to be part of their permanent display. Lou Oliver of Camarillo, a member of the Topa Flywheelers Tractor Club, has given his fully restored 1952 Allis-Chalmers WD row crop tractor to the Museum.
"Allis," as she is called, was purchased new in 1952 from Power Tractor by the Tanaka Bros. Farms. She worked well and hard for over forty years. She was restored by Leonard Oliver and brought back to Camarillo in 2006 by Lou. On a bright, sunny morning in late November, members from PVHS met at a ranch in the Las Posas Valley where Allis was stored. She started right up and drove onto the flatbed that took her to the Museum where she now resides. Plans are underway to build a protective home in keeping with her history.

New Hours
Bolton Hall Museum in Tujunga, CA, announces new open hours for the 2018 summer months. From June 1 through August 31, Bolton Hall Museum will be open to the public as follows:
Friday, 5-8 p.m. (new)
Sunday, 1-4 p.m. (continuing)
During the summer months this year, the Museum will not be open on Tuesday afternoons for the time being. This change is being made to allow more individuals who work or go to school on weekdays to visit Bolton Hall Museum. In addition, an option to visit the Museum and the surrounding Little Landers Park on a balmy summer evening is a pleasant alternative to the hotter afternoon hours.

"Great Homes of Long Beach:
Architectural Jewels in Historic Neighborhoods Available For Viewing"
Six architecturally distinguished homes throughout the city will be open for viewing on Sunday, June 3rd, 12 noon to 5 p.m., during the "The Great Homes of Long Beach" home tour benefiting Long Beach Heritage.
Beautiful homes in the Belmont Heights, Bluff Park, Los Cerritos, and California Heights neighborhoods will be featured. A highlight of this year's tour is a 1911 classic Craftsman on Ocean Boulevard. The current owner, whose passion for design and attention to detail, transformed an early bungalow into a masterpiece of Craftsman style. Features include rich, hand-crafted wood and iron work as well as original Craftsman, Art Nouveau, and modern elements in over 5,000 square feet of living space.
Another unique Long Beach neighborhood featured on the tour is called Eliot Lane. Eliot Lane is a one-block historic district with small-scale homes lining a narrow street. The homes were all built in 1923 by a single builder, Boland & Smith, and represent an early subdivision of modest homes. All the original construction remains in place today.
At each home, Long Beach Heritage docents will greet visitors and highlight the various interior and exterior features and any known history about the home.
Tickets are $40, or $35 for Long Beach Heritage members. Reservations are limited. Proceeds from the tour support the

This fabulous family-owned Classic Car Museum is open Wednesday - Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 pm. Touring the museum is free to the public and parking is free.
