FEATURED EVENT: Black Hawk Helicopter Lands at Poynter for Special Air Show Event
Students at Poynter Middle School were in for a treat on Friday, Sept. 21, when an Oregon National Guard Black Hawk helicopter landed in their field. Students knew there would be something special happening on that day, but didn't know the details. After checking out the helicopter and two Humvees that were also on-site, students learned that all students and staff, plus two family members each, would be receiving tickets to the upcoming Oregon International Air Show, taking place Friday through Sunday, Sept. 28-30.

HSD Erin's Law Parent Information Night
Oregon law (Senate Bill 856, or "Erin's Law") mandates that at least four times per year, all students must receive age-appropriate instruction to help them recognize and respond to unsafe situations, and to increase their awareness of child sexual abuse. These instructional sessions will begin soon, so we would like to invite parents to attend an informational meeting on Thursday, Oct. 4, from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Shute Park Library Meeting Room, 775 SE 10th Ave. Additional information about Erin's Law and its associated curriculum can be found on our website.

McKinney Elementary Begins Walking School Bus
Several students from McKinney participated in the kick-off event for the school's Walking School Bus initiative on Wednesday, Sept. 19. Walking School Bus is a program supported by Safe Routes to Schools (SRTS) that encourages students to be active and supervised on their way to school. Students gathered at McKinney Park and were joined by both their principal, Justin Welch, and Glencoe's mascot, Captain Crimson, for the walk to school. For more information about how you can start a Walking School Bus, please contact the SRTS Coordinator at 503-681-6146.

U.S. Capitol Tree Lighting Contest
Oregon has been selected to provide the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree for 2018, and one lucky 4th grader will have the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. with a guardian to take part in the tree-lighting ceremony along with members of the House of Representatives, the U.S. Senate, and the public. This year's theme is "Find Your Trail!," so students are asked to write an essay of up to 500 words explaining why they love spending time outdoors. Submission deadline is Friday, Sept. 28. Click here for more details.

Outstanding Educator Award Opportunities
Throughout the year, there are several opportunities to nominate outstanding teachers for recognition and awards. The first of those is accepting nominations now: the Smart/Maher National Citizenship Education Teacher of the Year Program , which recognizes three teachers (one from each level: elementary, middle, and high school) for their commitment to educating students about American history and citizenship. Deadline for nominations is Oct. 31, 2018.
