May 27, 2018: The Horse that Almost Got Away, or Following Your Dreams
  Rev.Dr. Jeanne Foster

Psychiatrist D. W. Winnicott writes that we often go about our lives with an attitude of compliance, as though the world is something to be fitted in with, demanding adaptation. The attitude of compliance tells us to put our dreams away in the back of the bottom drawer of the chest of drawers. But our dreams are part of creative living, Winnicott says, which makes life worthwhile. On this Sunday, we stand up for the world of dreams and for pulling dreams through into reality as a source of creativity, aliveness, and self-actualization.

Rev. Dr. Jeanne Foster grew up in New Orleans. She received her Master of Divinity degree from Starr King, was ordained by the Monterey Peninsula UU Church, and served as minister of the UU Fellowship in Modesto. She earned her Ph.D. from the Graduate Theological Union in the interdisciplinary area of Religion, Literature, and the Arts. She is currently Professor Emerita at Saint Mary's College in Moraga. A published poet, her work has appeared in numerous journals. Her poetry book,  A Blessing of Safe Travel, won the Quarterly Review of Literature Poetry Award. Among her other books are  Appetite: Food as Metaphor, an anthology of poems by women, and a critical work,  A Music of Grace: the Sacred in Contemporary American Poetry, which asks the question, Is there still sacred ground to stand on? Her latest book of poems,  Goodbye, Silver Sister, was released by Northwestern University Press (2015). She is co-translator of  The Living Theatre: Selected Poems of Bianca Tarozzi,  (BOA 2017). Her passions are ballroom dancing and Tuscany and, in particular, ballroom dancing in Tuscany.

  Words of Joy

We ceremonially welcomed two new members into the congregation this past Sunday. Actually, they both have been among us for a while, but recently signed the membership book. Here are their bios:

Kim Holscher
Kim's real name is Annette Holscher, but she has been Kim ever since being an exchange student from Germany in South Dakota at age 15. She attended graduate school, got married to Dave, and raised two sons in Seattle. Those sons are in tech, so Kim and Dave followed them to the Bay area in 2016. Kim is a Waldorf teacher, a fan of paranormal romance, and loves Indian food. She came to UUCM because of the sign at the bottom of the hill.  (Joy's comment--it pays to advertise! Let's not be such a well-kept secret!)

Amanda Morando
We have enjoyed having Amanda as our Choir Director since 2012, and now she has officially joined UUCM!
She has sung in choirs since she was young. Amanda graduated from UC Santa Barbara in 2010 with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance. She teaches music and drama at Dixie Elementary School, and she performs frequently in musicals and other concerts (including one coming up at UUCM, Celebrating Women Composers, on June 2  at 4:00 PM, with Milton Wong).

We warmly welcome Amanda and Kim as members.

If you would like to know more about membership or are interested in joining the congregation,  please contact me at [email protected] (510 821-2394)
or Thomas Ervin, Membership Chair. We may schedule one more New Member Sunday before the end of the church year.

Preparing for RE Sunday.
Our joyful celebration of RE is June 3rd. The children and youth are presenting  a smidgen of what they have been doing this year. Dress rehearsal is Sunday, May 27th. We will practice during RE classes and do blocking after service during coffee hour. Please plan on attending and staying until 12:20 that day.

Childcare at our Annual Meeting -  to have childcare  you   must RSVP  to [email protected] or 415 897-5047. Please share your child's name, age, and any food allergies.  Glynda has agreed to provide childcare, but If we don't get any requests, there will be no childcare. The youth's Fair Trade market of chocolate, coffee, cocoa, and hot chocolate will be closing for the summer. Last chance for a special order until Fall is this Sunday. Have you tried the spicy hot cocoa? Mmmm .... The last date of sales will be June 10th. Stock up for summer !! Profits benefit the UUCM Youth Leadership Fund. Order a box of your favorite - 12 bars for $37.50. A savings of $4.50.  The Creative Compassionates class has raised money and is exploring the benefits of microlending as a form of social justice. Kiva gives you the chance to make small loans to borrowers working to start businesses and improve their lives. I'm already lending on Kiva and thought you'd like to join us!  Joining via this invitation link to Kiva gives credit to the children's class and they can then loan even more to needy working people around the world.
The Summer Fun at UUCM is different  this year. Since n eith er the DRE nor the Youth Advisor will be working this summer, paid nursery staff and volunteer children's activity leaders are being sought. This is a way to have a casual "teaching" experience with the kids. Nature, art, music, stories, games ... are all possibilities. Usually, there are only 3-5 kids, but sometimes none.

Still, everyone's inner child needs some exercising now and then....Lend a hand, bring a friend, share the fun....   If you are interested in either the paid position or volunteering for a Sunday or two, please contact  the DRE at  [email protected]  between now and 6/13. To volunteer in the 1-6 year-olds  Click HERE. To sign up as an activity presenter or as an assistant for ages 7-11 please go to this  Sign-up Genius link. If you are new to RE we may ask for a background check. Come share some FUN !!

A taste of Regional Assembly in Portland
This event only happens every two to three years. It was well worth it. Many found it more accessible than General Assembly where you swim in a sea of 5k UUs, and broader than the District Assembly with programming for 400 UUs. Regional had 650 UUs in attendance and was organized by our Regional staff. Here are some videos of the worship.

Celebrate With Joy!
blue_star.jpg
On June 17th, following the service, we will honor Rev. Joy Atkinson, who is concluding a successful 2 year interim ministry with us and beginning her own transition into retirement after 41 years of ministry.

We invite everyone reading this to write a letter, note, card-or pen a cartoon, poem, or drawing-in celebration of Rev. Joy . These will be included in a scrapbook we are creating.

Please be part of the process! Sharing a memory, reflection or funny anecdote can be done in just a few moments.  (Really you will be amazed at what you can write in 5 minutes or less; and you will feel good about doing it and she will feel good reading it).  So good all around.....

You can put items in Kat Braeman's box in the Community Room or send things via email to  [email protected] .

We would appreciate having items by June 10th if possible.

Thanks for helping make this happen...

Shared Housing Community Forum Update

A huge thank you to all who helped make the Shared Housing Community Forum a success!

Special thanks to:
Kristin Jensen, Karen Auroy, Mary Gilstrap, Norm Davidson, Anne Spatola, Walt Littrell, Mary Bicknell, Jan Seagrave,
Dick Park and Judy Finn and to all who attended!

Approximately 40 people attended this event and over half were first time visitors to UUCM.

Damon Connolly, Marin County Board Supervisor, opened the program with updates regarding affordable housing proposed projects and how green lighting the permitting for accessory dwelling units (ADU/JDU) and such things as garage conversions into affordable rental spaces is moving forward. Movement on tenants' protections was also shared.

Home Match  https://covia.org/services/home-match/ provided information about matching seniors with reliable, vetted renters.

Marin Villages  http://www.marinvillages.org shared information about how they help seniors age in place and ADU's and JDU (junior units) were also described as a way for homeowners to stay in their homes while providing affordable housing to those in need.

Please contact Linda Haumann at   [email protected]  for more information.
Share Something Fun
Between mid-June and August regular Religious Exploration classes do not meet, but we like to have youth-friendly activities available for UUCM kids and visiting families at a table in the foyer.  Do you have a craft, game, or outdoor activity  for ages 6 to teens that you would be willing to share on one Sunday ?

There will be a sign-up board in the foyer beginning this Sunday or you can email   [email protected] between now and 6/13.  Everyone's inner child needs some exercising now and then....Lend a hand, bring a friend, share the fun....

A  dynamic committee has already been convened and has started planning. So start thinking about what you can donate or ask local businesses to donate.

Dinners for Eight
"Food is our common ground, a universal experience." James Beard. Get to know other members of the congregation eating dinners in their homes through Dinners for Eight (or Six).  We would love to have more participants for the last dinner of the year on June 2nd.

Dinners for 8 (or Six) is a coordinated potluck. We meet on the 1st Saturday of the month, October through June. Each month a volunteer host will offer a main course and guests bring appetizers, salad/soup, dessert, and wine and good conversation. Readers' Theater
UUCM Readers' Theater invites members and friends to join our fun-loving group. We meet twice a month, on the second and fourth Monday of each month, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm at UUCM. Most of the time, we read short plays aloud when we meet, but every 6-8 weeks we rehearse and then present short prose or poems during a service. No memorizing required, but you should be willing to ham it up and be silly. Information: Jan Seagrave ( [email protected] ).
UUCM Book Club Dates - June, July
