News from the Valley
CSUB Jazz Festival

The Bakersfield 2018 Jazz Festival was truly a memorable time for all Jazz enthusiasts who attended the event. The festival was hosted by Cal State, Bakersfield whose beautiful landscape scenery made the Jazz festival much more enjoyable. Whether it was spending time with friends, family, or solo there was no doubt everybody there enjoyed the sounds of what captivated the country's ear for so long. The festival was a two-day event which started on April 27th from April 28th. Although the festival full of thirsty and hungry Jazz fans, it was also full of vendors selling a variety of goods. This in turn can create a large amount of trash such as plastic and aluminum waste.

Thankfully the environmentally conscious excellent people who organized and ran the event did an outstanding job making sure all trash was picked up from the floor and all trash was properly sorted.

Kern Green would like to encourage future event organizers to make their event zero waste. Consider the well-being of the environment by purchasing supplies that are biodegradable and having recycling and compost receptacles throughout event location. Reach out to us on more tips to make your event ZERO WASTE.

Green Scene Tip of the Month

Take a moment to consider what you are purchasing so you won't waste food!
  • Find out how to store fruits and vegetables so they stay fresh longer inside or outside your refrigerator. Storing these foods in the chillier fridge temps will preserve flavor and texture, and prevent bacteria growth and spoiling.
  • Freeze, preserve, or can surplus fruits and vegetables - especially abundant seasonal produce.
  • Many fruits give off natural gases as they ripen, making other nearby produce spoil faster. Store bananas, apples, and tomatoes by themselves, and store fruits and vegetables in different bins.
  • Wait to wash berries until you want to eat them to prevent mold.
  • If you like to eat fruit at room temperature, but it should be stored in the refrigerator for maximum freshness, take what you'll eat for the day out of the refrigerator in the morning.
Reminder to store these foods outside the fridge:
  • Bananas, tomatoes, mangos, papayas and pineapples: store in a cool place
  • Potatoes/onions: store in a cool, dark place, away from each other
  • Basil and winter squashes: store at room temperature, once cut store squash in fridge
  • Avocados, nectarines, pears, plums, peaches, kiwi
Store these food inside the fridge:
  • Store away from other produce:
  • Apples, apricots, cantaloupe,
  • honeydew, figs

Americans are squandering the equivalent of $165 billion each year by rubbishing so much food. Be smart and save your money and avoid wasting food!
