SIXTY-THIRD EDITION

April 17, 2018

Brothers and Sisters:

Over the last couple of years there has been a substantial increase in the verified need to use Union Release Time. Union Release Time is used for a multitude of reasons including negotiations, grievance representation, disciplinary actions and funerals.
The negotiation process usurped a vast amount of the release time bank due to attending meetings with CALHR and the legisla-ture. The L2881 Fire Fighters in Crisis Rally held at the State Capital used release time to remind legislators of the need for a contract.

It is unfortunate over the last few years the Department has taken a more drastic approach with disciplinary actions, causing the need to use release time to represent our members. Contract violations are occurring more frequently, creating more time spent defending our contract.

Union release time is also used in support of district and chapter issues, such as attacks on staffing levels and other local issues which has kept our union officers busy.
And furthermore, there has been an increase in usage due to the sudden and unexpected deaths of our brothers and sisters from job related illness and injuries. CAL FIRE Local 2881 Honor Guard has been performing non-stop to ensure our members re-ceive the honor they deserve during their memorials.

Did you know, you can donate to the Release Time Bank to further support all of the services listed above. Vacation, Annual Leave, Holidays, PLP's and CTO time can be donated in one day increments.

Please go to:
and download the form to start the donation process. Please remember to print and attach the form to your timesheet (E-Pay) and email a copy to  [email protected]  at Union Headquarters.

Stay the Course,

Tim Edwards
State Rank and File Director

WTRF, 4/27/2018

Both locally and nationally, firefighters seem to have a higher risk of cancer than the rest of the population.

U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown has authored a bill to establish a voluntary cancer registry that would require the CDC to collect data on the incidence of cancer among firefighters.
The bipartisan bill has passed out of committee and is now up for a full vote by the Senate.

US Senator Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio said, "So we want to gather data from the chemicals we know are in fires that are burning  and what kind of illnesses firefighters have, cancer and other things. And really understand it better that doctors and other health researchers can figure out what we need to do to keep firefighters from being exposed to some of these particularly toxic chemicals."   READ MORE

FIRE HOUSE, 5/3/2018

Expect significant growth in the amount of area burned annually by wildfires across western North America in the coming decades, according to a study that included two University of Arizona researchers.

The team, which included professor Donald Falk in the UA school of Natural Resources and the Environment and regents professor emeritus Thomas Swetnam in the Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research, used nearly 35 years of data on climate and area burned in the western half of the United States and Canada to create its model. The study comes after a historically bad 2017 fire season in areas of California and western Canada - something that may become more common in the years ahead. READ MORE
