Faculty Profile: Dr. Elizabeth Higdon

Dr. Elizabeth Hidgon was initially a preceptor for ACPHS at the Shaw's Osco pharmacy in Colchester. She joined the College as a pharmacy skills lab instructor in January 2014.

1. What is your favorite part about teaching?
I feel like my favorite part keeps changing, but there is one common theme. I am here for the students. For the first few years I was on campus, my favorite part was sharing my enthusiasm and passion for community pharmacy. I am lucky because I teach primarily in the Pharmacy Skills Sequence and as the years continue, it is an honor to be able to watch students progress from P1-P4s, graduate, start their careers and watch the transition from student to peer.

2. What do you like about living in Vermont?
I grew up in Wyoming, so I am an outdoorsy girl and Vermont provides the perfect setting for outdoor activities. There is always something to do! There is so much history here and Vermonters are very proud of their state.

I cannot forget about all of the food (cheese, ice cream, maple syrup) and beverages (beer, apple cider, maple syrup). One of my favorite things to do is "playing tourist" and traveling to all the places that sell/sample these delicious foods and drinks.

3. What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I enjoy spending quality with my significant other, Randy and my cats, Rudy and Archie. We do a ton of outdoor activities: hiking, boating, kayaking, fishing, shooting, snowshoeing, ice-skating, and gardening.
Class of 2018, Welcome to the Alumni Family
Congratulations to the class of 2018, and welcome to our alumni community! On May 12, students, parents, faculty, staff, and friends of the College braved the chilly temperatures to celebrate the College's 138th Commencement at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. The graduating class included 51 bachelor's degrees, 25 master's degrees, and 224 Pharm.D. degrees.

Commencement speaker Jason Helgerson shared the importance and the roles our graduates will play in the ever changing landscape of health care now and in the future.

Students speakers were Liam McGuey from Albany and Ryan Guilaran from Vermont. McGuey reminded his classmates that every moment is precious, and Guilaran shared the great opportunities that the Vermont campus provided him and his classmates and how their journey will forever keep them connected.

Vermont Campus Faculty Member and Student Earn Top Poster Honors

Associate Professor Joanna Schwartz and P4 student Ai Tran, both members of the Vermont Campus, received a first place poster award at the recent meeting of the Northern New England Clinical Oncology Society. Their research poster, titled "Potential herb-chemotherapy or radiation interactions in patients with cancer: A prospective study of the pharmacist and student-pharmacist run herbal assessment service at the University of Vermont (UVM) Cancer Center," was voted best among the 37 abstracts accepted at the conference. Ai, who attended the meeting and co-presented with Dr. Schwartz, will be heading to Seattle, WA, following graduation where she will begin a residency at the Providence Medical Center.
