Upcoming Service
Sunday, June 3
at  10 a.m.

Worship Lead:
Rev. Mara Dowdall, Senior Minister

Worship Associate:
Rodney Lowe

"Our Power to Bless"
As we begin June, with the spiritual theme of "blessing," Rev. Mara will help us explore what it actually means "to bless," and how we each can access the power of blessing one another. Our service will also include a child dedication and celebration of the successful conclusion of our ministerial internship. All of that, and we still promise to end on time so the Annual Meeting can begin promptly following worship!

Fund the Vision! Meet the Budget!
The Annual Meeting is fast approaching, but there is still time to discuss this year's proposed budget. Details can be found on the Society website at  uusociety.org/2018-fuusb-annual-meeting/.  Board President Tracy Titchner, Treasurer Alana Shaw, Reverend Mara and members of the finance team will be holding a meeting on  Thursday, May 31 at 5:30 p.m.  at the Meeting House to answer any of your questions about the budget deficit and the vision for next year and beyond. It's also not too late to make a one-time donation to decrease the size of next year's projected deficit. You can give online at the UU Society website, or by sending a check with "Fund the Vision" in the memo line. Please join us!

Message from Our Transitional Minister
Members and Friends of First Unitarian Universalist Society of Burlington,

As I finish up a two-year interim here in Newburyport, MA, my thoughts turn frequently to the mountains of Vermont and to Burlington. Most of all, of course, they focus on your congregation as you come to your closing time with Rev. Mara Dowdall. I wish for you all a full and gentle time of the heart.

For my part, I am excited to be selected to serve as your interim minister. First Unitarian Universalist Society of Burlington is clearly an active, vital congregation doing important work to fulfill your mission and the values of our faith tradition. In the coming two years we want to continue to realize that fundamental purpose while also reflecting on the past and working our way toward your future.

A strong congregation can emerge from an interim period stronger than ever and, perhaps, even, a bit more self-aware. It will take trust, openness, and a willingness, always, to bring out the best in one another. I am committed to making that kind of journey with you. You will hear more from me as the beginning of the interim period approaches, but in the meantime I very much look forward to meeting you.

In the faith,
Rev. Susan Milnor

Racial Justice Task Force - 8th Principle
Sally Russell

Our Racial Justice Task Force has initiated an effort to educate the congregation on the 8th Principle, the draft wording of which is "We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote: journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions." We held a thoughtful discussion after the service on May 20 and we plan on more of these conversations.

Here are a few links that are helpful to understand the 8th principle and to understand why the Task Force has taken this on within our congregation:

  • Kathy Bonilla has been fighting a long-term health battle and she and her two granddaughters truly appreciate the help that a few meals a week can be.
  • Miriam (Tammy) Strauss is dealing with long-term health issues caused by being rear-ended by a cattle truck. One meal every week is a major support to her. Hannaford, Rite Aid or gas station gift cards are also welcomed. Meals can be delivered either to her home in Essex Junction or to her place of work in South Burlington. See the meal train for more details.
