School Bus Driver Hailed a Hero for Saving Student's Life
Sharonda Akins, a bus driver for Jupiter Farms Elementary School, has been hailed a hero by one of her student's parents.

A bus operator for the past nine years, Ms. Akins knows the name of every child on her bus, and the responsibility she has to ensure the safety of her students. Recently, she was faced with an emergency situation that put her dedication and diligence to the test.

When dropping children off at a bus stop this month, Ms. Akins noticed that a driver appeared to be distracted, and was likely not going to come to a stop for the children who were preparing to cross the street.

"...And I laid on the horn," she said. "And me laying on the horn, she [the other driver] finally jumped up...she came to a complete stop."

The driver ended up stopping just a few feet from kindergarten student Eila Queenan. Eila's mom, Lauren Queenan, had nothing but praise for Ms. Akins quick-thinking response.

"It was amazing...in seconds, she [Ms. Akins] starts laying her horn down," Ms. Queenan shared. "If she hadn't done that...it was amazing."

Tallahassee Democrat: Pahokee High School Graduates Attend Cannes Film Festival

Tallahassee DemocratIt's not often you're the subject of a movie. Not often you get to go to Cannes. Now, two students from Pahokee who attend Tallahassee colleges are heading there and taking it all in stride.

"Skip Day" tells the story of a Pahokee High School graduation tradition, where upperclassmen skip school the Monday after prom - and before the exotic cars must be returned - and spend the day at the beach, where girls with their lovely hairdos still intact, are 'ritually' dunked in the surf. It's the finale of a weekend lost in time, and the subject of the latest in a string of movies shot and produced in Pahokee by  Patrick Bresnan and Ivete Lucas.

Pahokee graduates Jamelia Burroughs, a second year pre-pharmacy student at Florida A&M University, and N'Kerria Nelson, a first year nursing major at Tallahasee Community College, spent a week in France earlier this month to attend Cannes and promote the film.

Palm Beach Post: Olympic Heights HS Student-Athlete Survived Haiti Earthquake, Now He's Heading to Yale
Palm Beach Post -  Olympic Heights Community High School senior  Sebastian Bruno is going to Yale. His mother, the mother with whom he speaks weekly, but last saw three years ago, was proud but didn't realize how proud until she Googled the university.  Now she's over the moon.

Not bad for a boy who left his home and his parents in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti and arrived by military transport in Palm Beach County at the age of 9, not knowing a word of English and with a 6-year-old autistic brother in tow.

Now he's going to one of the nation's most prestigious universities to play football on a full scholarship.

Not bad for a boy who wanted nothing to do with coming to the United States, though his mother had prepared for his departure from his first breath.

"I didn't want to go," he said. "Not without her."

Eight years later, he's adjusted. By everyone else's accounts, the Olympic Heights senior who will cross the stage at graduation this afternoon has thrived, his  3.95 weighted GPA shining as proof. Read more...
Employees Learn and Unwind During Health & Fitness Day

About 150 people converged on the Cafeteria in the Fulton-Holland Educational Services Center last week for Health & Fitness Day.

More than a dozen companies were on hand, with some handing out free produce, providing chair massages, and offering health screenings and raffle prizes.

A fun attraction was the large inflatable colon positioned at the entrance to the Cafeteria, giving attendees a glimpse of a colon with polyps.

"This annual event was very successful, in part because of our wonderful District partners that provided a fun and educational experience for our employees," said Carlye Fabrikant, the District's Wellness Coordinator. "It is great to be able to honor our staff with an event like this, and celebrate another successful school year." Read more...
