Senior Minister Evaluation
Giving constructive feedback is one way that we as a congregation can be in right relationship with our senior minister, and so the Board of Trustees is asking for your valuable input. The senior minister was last evaluated in 2014 by the Committee on Ministry; this responsibility has now moved to the Board of Trustees’ Personnel Committee. The Committee invites the church’s members, friends, and staff to complete the Fulfilling the Call ministry performance evaluation tool, developed in 2013 by the UUA and UU Ministers’ Association. Your input is vital, as is everyone’s, so please take the time to complete the evaluation . Fulfilling the Call will be available on our website from this Sunday, May 13, through Friday, June 15. Over the summer, the Personnel Committee and the Board of Trustees, using your feedback, will develop a thorough, thoughtful, and respectful assessment of the many duties of our senior minister. Questions? Contact Esther Strongman (sstrongman@aol.com).
Reproductive Justice
All Souls’ Reproductive Justice Initiative is excited to announce that Monica Simpson, Executive Director of SisterSong, will join us for a conversation on the role of faith and religion in reproductive justice. SisterSong, the oldest and largest woman of color-led organization dedicated to reproductive justice, focuses on strengthening and amplifying the collective voices of indigenous women and women of color to eradicate reproductive oppression. This event is part of an ongoing series of actions to create a network of faith activists for reproductive justice in DC. Light refreshments provided. The event is free to attend, but tickets will be required due to limited space. Tickets: http://bit.ly/FaithRJMonica . More info at the Facebook event (please share!). Mon., Jun. 4, 7:00-8:30 pm, Pierce Hall.

Jubilee Anti-Racism Training. Do you wish to nurture your congregation’s multicultural future in the face of opposing cultural currents? Do you wish to deepen your understanding of how race and ethnicity play out in our institutions (including All Souls Church) and our daily lives? Jubilee Anti-Racism Training helps participants understand what is involved in nurturing a multicultural community and working against racism in all its forms. The workshop requires a weekend commitment (2.5 days); it is worth every minute of that commitment. The workshop is open to members of any Unitarian Universalist congregation, although All Souls members are particularly encouraged to participate. $160 per participant (includes cost for trainers, meals and materials). Contributions in support of this work are welcome. Register here. Fri., Jun. 8 (6–10 pm); Sat., Jun. 9 (9 am – 9 pm); Sun., Jun. 10 (8:30 am – 5 pm), All Souls Church. Register .
Classic Readings

Selections from Frances Ellen Watkins Harper. Novelist and poet Frances Ellen Watkins Harper (1825-1911) was the most prominent African-American woman writer of her generation. Raised in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, she joined the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia in 1870, after which she maintained a dual commitment to Unitarianism and the AME. Come learn more about this remarkable writer and activist. Rev. Dr. Joanne Braxton. Wednesdays, June 6 and 20, 7-9 pm, Eaton Room. Register .

Selections from Margaret Fuller. Margaret Fuller’s writing is overshadowed by the extraordinary events of her life, which saw her move from editorship of the Transcendentalist journal The Dial to becoming the first female book reviewer and foreign correspondent for the New York Tribune and, eventually, a direct participant in the Italian revolutions of 1848. We will consider her life and influence through a sampling of her work. Kevin McColluch. Wednesdays, July 11 and 25, 7-9 pm, Eaton Room. Register .

And let us know if you have specific skills or want to provide a particular type of direct support. Sun., Jun. 17, 12:00 noon - 1:30 pm, room TBD.

Thanks

  • Thanks to all who attended the baby shower for Beza, an Ethiopian television journalist granted asylum in the U.S. She and her partner, Addis, appreciate everyone’s time and generosity. For those not there, it’s not too late to support Beza during her pregnancy. Several items remain on her registry, and you can help her be all set when the baby arrives (due on June 22).
  • Thanks to the two congregants who’ll help Ronnie buy glasses!
  • Thanks to the congregant arranging for a job interview for Mr. N!
  • Thanks to the congregant who has let us know about rental housing available in August! Several ASAP clients may be interested.

Current Direct Support Opportunities

Ronnie, our human rights journalist who fled Honduras, has no work authorization yet and has no income. Consider donating a gift card to help with food and personal expenses. You can leave gift cards at the front desk, attention RSI.

Kizito is doing well but needs career counseling and financial planning advice as he starts working and building income. Contact Cynthia Pratt ( cprattdc@msn.com ).

Three ASAP clients need assistance:
  • John, a Nigerian accountant, would like to connect with an LGBT-friendly church.
  • Mr. N, a Sudanese telecommunications engineer, needs job search assistance and professional mentoring. He is willing to work any full-time entry level engineering job, including maintenance or operations. He is fluent in English, Nubian, and three other languages; is work authorized; and has been granted asylum.
  • Ms. S, a former consular officer from Ethiopia with 15 years of management experience, also needs job search support and professional mentoring. She is looking for a position as an administrative assistant or entry-level IT. She speaks very good English and is taking computer classes to improve her skills.

Do you have a room to rent to an asylum seeker? Some refugees and asylum seekers need housing and can pay reasonable rent or exchange services (babysitting, eldercare, etc.) for a room.

Opportunities
Believe in radical hospitality? Act on those beliefs! Worship services can be magical, but they don’t happen magically. In addition to the ministers and staff, we depend on the time, effort, and good will of volunteer congregants. Interested in helping? You have a choice of roles to play, and each is important.
  • Worship Associates speak from the pulpit five or six times a year to welcome the congregation and introduce the offering collection. Worship Buddies help setup before services. Training occurs once or twice a year. Contact Jana Owens (jana_owens@hotmail.com).
  • Ushers welcome congregants and visitors, hand out the orders of service, and help everything run smoothly and safely. The commitment is only one service each month, so it’s a great way to get involved. Contact Mark Matthews (markhowardmatthews@gmail.com).
  • Greeters welcome visitors and answer their questions, both before and after services. Really important, but easy—once a month commitment and no meetings! Great way to meet people, and you’re already qualified! Contact Sarah Puro (sarahpuro@yahoo.com).
  • Counters receive the offering plates, tally the numbers, and lock everything away in the safe. You’ll serve once a month after the second service and meet a nice group of folks. Contact John Crowe (babaloo913@gmail.com).
  • The Lunch Ministry nourishes the congregation with a homemade, healthy meal about once a month. Stretch your culinary skills! Visit all-souls.org/lunch or contact Jerri Husch (ascu.lunch@ gmail.com).
