Join OLLI on Trip to Streator for Mural Festival

Murals and Milestones: 2018 Streator Walldogs Mural Festival
Friday, June 29
8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Level 3 Learning Trip

What happens when 200 highly skilled sign painters and mural artists from all over the country converge in one lucky town to paint 16 murals in five days?

It's a Walldog Festival, and that's what OLLI will celebrate when we visit Streator in June.  To add to the fun, the city will be observing its 150th Anniversary - and Illinois' 200th Anniversary - in one big celebration.

We'll also visit Weber House and Garden featuring Storybook style architecture, a blend of more defined styles, and the beautiful English country gardens consisting of ten individually-themed "rooms."

Make sure you join us - and our informative step-on guide -  for this triple anniversary in Streator!

Fee - $99 includes tour, presentations, lunch, gratuities, snacks, and charter coach transportation.

Register online, or call Gwen or Bonnie at (309) 677-3900.

Pardon Our 'Mess' at Continuing Education's Building!

Packed tubs
Those chips in the tile and stains on the carpet will not be missed when Continuing Education undergoes a much needed flooring face-lift beginning June 4.  In the meantime, all the staff are packing their offices (Michelle's office is shown at right), so that the installers will have easy access to the floors.

Pardon our mess as we temporarily conduct business under some trying conditions that may include a disruption in our work.  The copy machine, the phones, the computers, and all of the staff will be impacted until the work is complete.

Please make a note on your calendar that a visit to Continuing Education will be a challenge for awhile (watch out for all the packing crates), and that the staff will be working remotely, or in the Continuing Education basement.  Thanks in advance for your patience and cooperation!

WOW Reaches Goal for Recyclable Materials

WOW!

Thanks to OLLI members, we have met our goal to supply the World of Wonder (WOW) program with recyclables.

WOW teachers are now completely "supplied" with the articles they need to support their classroom activities.

Your generosity means WOW students will have an abundance of materials to design and build all kinds of treasures during their time on Bradley's campus this summer.

Thanks again to our OLLI community who helped make this possible - you can now resume your usual recycling schedule at home!

Seven Bradley Teams Recognized
for Academic Achievement

A school-record seven Bradley University programs were recognized by the NCAA for outstanding academic achievement, earning Academic Progress Rate (APR) Public Recognition Awards. The Braves men's basketball, men's golf, men's soccer, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's tennis and women's track programs each collected the honor from the NCAA, announced on Wednesday.

To be recognized, a program must rank in the top 10 percent within its sport nationally, according to overall team academic performance during a four-year period. The current period released ended with the 2016-17 academic year.

Bradley's seven recognized programs are not only a school record but the most in the Missouri Valley Conference, with Loyola ranking second with six honorees.

Congratulations, Bradley Braves!

Peoria Public Library to Host May 22 Event on
The Great American Read

Peoria Public Library has received a grant from the American Library Association (ALA) and PBS to host programs around  The Great American Read,  an eight-part television series and multi-platform initiative  that celebrates the joy of reading and the books we love.  The  Peoria Public Library was one of just 50 libraries nationwide to be selected.

A library kick-off for "The Great American Read" will be hosted by Terry Bibo Knight, long-time journalist for the Peoria Journal Star, at 6:30 p.m. on May 22 at Peoria Public Library North Branch in the McKenzie Room.  After a short discussion, the PBS program will be shown from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The names of the top 100 books will be announced and voting will begin. Refreshments will be served.

In addition to the grant money, Peoria Public Library will receive a DVD collection of the series with public performance rights; a hardcover copy of the companion book, The Great American Read: The Book of Books by PBS (Black Dog & Leventhal, August 21, 2018); and other resources.

The Great American Read will engage audiences with a list of 100 diverse books, encouraging audiences to read the books, vote from the list of 100, and share their personal connections to the titles.
