President's message

Dear GHI Members and Subscribers to this Newsletter,

It is a pleasure to send you again a newsletter with real news. Because everybody in GHI is a volunteer and contributes free time, we agreed not to pay too much attention to the sequence of the news, but just concentrate on the contents. Your comments of course are very welcome, as always.

Enjoy!

GHI musical performance during the first GHI Congress

Having seen Marco Dalla Rosa performing during a dinner of another conference and being very impressed, I asked Marco if he would be willing to arrange musical performance during the dinner of the 1st GHI Congress. Marco is willing to do so, provided that there will be enough musical talents among the participants willing to join. Hence: if you intend to participate in the congress ( www.ghiworldcongress.org) and are willing to show your musical skills, please c ontact Prof. Marco Dalla Rosa at marco.dallarosa@unibo.it

Publications of potential interest to GHI members

When we know about publications that are relevant to the intentions of GHI and therefore of potential interest to the GHI community, we announce them in the newsletter.

Recent publications by the GHI Ambassador in Shri Lanka, Dr. Viduranga Y. Waisundara

Palm Oil

Palm oil is an industrially and agriculturally important crop, where crude palm oil itself can be processed into many downstream products. The palm oil industry remains vital to many countries since its cultivation has led to socio-economic advancements and growth in gross domestic product. Nevertheless, palm oil cultivation has led to adverse effects on farming practices resulting in deforestation and climate change. Thus, palm oil production is a matter of global impact, especially on environmental factors. Bearing these aspects in mind, this book primarily focuses on various aspects of the palm oil industry, principally its impact on the current consumer market as a crop of agricultural and industrial value and effects on the environment. Therefore, its contents would be of value and relevance to the GHI members as well.

The book is open access and therefore can be freely downloaded from https://www.intechopen.com/books/palm-oil

Diabetes Food Plan

Diabetes is a global pandemic with a rising prevalence, thereby, imparting a significant financial burden upon countries and economies. This book aims at serving as an update in highlighting gaps and voids as well as providing insights into novel developments of this non-communicable disease condition. In essence, this compilation concludes that worldwide initiatives and consensus to reduce the incidence of the disease is required, starting with making informed choices about diabetes and possible dietary interventions in preventing its occurrence.

Comment by Dr. V. Prakash, GHI Board Member
"This is an excellent compilation with 11 Mantras as Chapters and is very useful to not only persons who are suffering with Diabetes Mellitus but also to those who want to reduce calories and eat Healthy Diet with Food Plan. I congratulate the authors and editors."

This book too is open access and can be downloaded from https://www.intechopen.com/books/diabetes-food-plan

Recent publication by the GHI Ambassadors in Kenya, Benard Oloo, Lanoi Daisy and Ruth Oniang'o

Food Safety Legislation in Some Developing Countries

This is a chapter in the book "Food Safety - Some Global Trends". Developing countries host small scale food enterprises, often managed by non-food technologists who are reluctant to engage expensive food technologists. They also tend to be skeptical of regulating institutions and lack knowledge about regulations. It is considered critical that these issues are addressed and that food safety standards are implemented. This chapter reviews these unique challenges and presents case studies from Asia, West and East Africa and discusses innovative approaches/strategies that could accelerate implementation of food safety legislations in the developing world.

The chapter can be downloaded from:
Translations of Share Sheet 1 - Harmonisation: Feeding People, Fueling Innovation

Share Sheet 1 explaining food safety has been translated into >15  languages, so that the matter is easier to understand by people in countries where English is not understood well by everybody interested in the subject.  The links to download the translations can be found on the Ambassador webpages  (see https://www.globalharmonization.net/ambassador-country-list ) and in the GHI library ( https://www.globalharmonization.net/share-sheets-and-whitepapers ).
Scientific Trends of Global Food Laws and Regulations

The publisher of  Quality Assurance and Safety of Crops & Foods (QAS; see https://www.wageningenacademic.com/loi/qas ), Wageningen Academic Publishers, is going to publish a special issue of the journal. Anybody interested in submitting an article is invited to write to the Guest Editor Prof. Dr. Hamid Ezzatpanah <hamid.ezzatpanah@globalharmonization.net>.

FOOD EVOLUTION

To debunk the vast amount of nonsense about the use of genetic modification to help reduce food insecurity, in 2017 the movie "Food Evolution" has been produced. It is a great and clear movie explaining genetic modification in a way that is easily understood. For a review of the movie, see https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/22/movies/food-evolution-review.html. The impressive movie trailer can be viewed at https://www.foodevolutionmovie.com.

Pre-release DVDs are available for conferences, associations and professional member organizations. Anybody interested in screening the movie may contact the Community Screenings Campaign Manager, Michelle Fawcett <michelle@foodevolutionmovie.com>.
Grains are important for food and nutrient security, all over the globe. The ICC International Conference -  GRAINS FOR WELLBEING , 5-8 Nov 2018 in Taipei, will provide a platform for exchanging research outcome and to discuss the trends in the grains industry.
Food safety and health institutes in the world

The Working Group "Global Incident Alert Network" has started two projects, "Global Incident Alert Network for Unauthorized Food Additives" (GIANUFA) and "Global Incident Alert Network for Pathogens in Food (GIANPIF)". More details will soon be on the WG webpage. One of the objectives of the WG is to rapidly inform authorities in case of a serious food safety incident that has not yet been reported in any other way. For that reason, it is important to have a complete and correct list of food safety authorities and institutes in all countries. GHI Ambassadors therefore are asked to provide such information. For countries without GHI Ambassadors we invite members to provide such information (we also invite candidates for GHI Ambassadorship in these countries, see https://www.globalharmonization.net/ambassadors ).

Much information is on webpage:
but may have to be updated or completed.
