Salt & Light Youth Group
Reported by Miss Aleene Voskerijian
Members of St. Sarkis' Salt & Light group gathered for their third session on Friday, February 28. Both facilitators and participants excitedlymet with each other to enjoy dinner and catch up from where they last left off. After dinner, the kids met with their small, facilitator-led groups to discuss the lesson for that day. The discussions were focused around they way that Jesus challenged authority and how the Pharisees feared Jesus because they thought his teachings would change the way they once worshiped and obeyed God. However, they failed to see that Jesus was God in flesh form - therefore following Jesus would be following God. The participants were also introduced to the Serenity prayer and brainstormed ways in which they can apply the prayer to their everyday lives.
Our youth group schedule for this season includes 1 more session date, as well as a bake sale, church clean-up day, and another outreach event at St. Mary's Children's Hospital. Both facilitators and participants have benefited from their time together and hope to conclude the season on a high note.

Sunday School
Reported by Mrs. Lara Bardizbanian

The 3 rd grade Sunday School class had an exciting day with Ms. Lara. This week's lesson was titled "Prayer is Talking With God". The students discussed different forms of prayer, those we can say by-heart and those that are more personal conversations with God. This week they continued to learn about saints, focusing on St Gregory of Narek and St Nerses Shnorhali. After reading an excerpt of a prayer written by each saint, Ms. Lara passed around photo icons of the saints and the children made observations about how they dressed, what they held in their hands, and other various details.

The Sunday school descended to church for some quiet time to pray and to listen to the service. They were also able to witness the curtain closed for Lent. Der Nareg's sermon reminded all those present to use this time of Lent for modifications in our behavior, this being a holy time where we can all think about making a positive change. And in making that change, getting to our ultimate goal which is getting closer to God. For example, he said, instead of waking up and looking at one's cell phone, replace that time with reading a Bible verse. And in time those kind of small changes will make a huge impact on our lives.
Violence in Armenia
Reported by Miss Anahid Ugurlayan
On March 1, a capacity crowd filled Pagoumian Hall at St. Sarkis to hear a presentation entitled "Domestic Violence in Armenia and Beyond -- How Can We Help?"  The speaker was Maro Matosian, Executive Director of the Women's Support Center (WSC), which is  dedicated to empowering women, educating communities and engaging stakeholders to eradicate domestic violence in Armenia. Anahid Ugurlayan introduced Matosian and thanked her for her life-saving work to raise awareness about the prevalence of domestic violence in Armenia and the diaspora.  Ugurlayan noted that domestic violence is physical, emotional and psychologic and exists in every community worldwide regardless of one's socioeconomic status or educational level.

Matosian explained that gender stereotypes and gender-based violence are pervasive in Armenia. Gender stereotypes begin early in school textbooks showing girls doing housework and men reading the newspaper and doing nothing and are rampant in political discourse praising women's beauty and not acknowledging any other value they possess.   Gender-based violence is also widely displayed in popular soap operas which depict men exhibiting physical and emotional violence against their wives. What's worse, the perception of domestic violence as an acceptable way for a man to control his wife or girlfriend is evidenced in the results of a sociological survey in which 76% of respondents justify domestic violence.   Matosian explained that educating the community about these stereotypes and fostering healthy relationships is ongoing and quite challenging because society and especially men think a woman is their property and they are entitled to do as they please.

Matosian presented the staggering statistics on domestic violence in Armenia -- 1 in 4 women experience domestic violence and 60% report domestic violence.  She stressed that domestic violence is physical, emotional, sexual and financial and that victims are often too traumatized to verbalize the abuse they endured.  In fact, it is no wonder that the two shelters the WSC runs in Yerevan are at capacity. Presently the Ministry of Social Affairs has entrusted WSC to train and to open Domestic Violence Support Centers in all the regions of Armenia.  While a domestic violence law passed in Armenia in 2017, thanks in large part to the activism of Maro and her team at WSC, it is not being enforced as it should. Matosian explained that retraining police to properly respond to domestic violence calls is essential as is enforcement of the law by an unbiased judiciary.

Engaging stakeholders is a critical part of Matosian's work.  She explained that they have created highly successful public awareness campaigns particularly in the case of homicide as a result of domestic violence and miscarriages of justice in domestic violence cases.  The WSC also works with other NGOs and stakeholders in the EU to effectuate change and keep this issue top-of-mind at the executive, legislative and judicial levels in Armenia.

The audience was fully engaged, and a lengthy q & a followed.  Der Nareg thanked Matosian for her work and urged the audience to support her work.

For more information on the WSC and how you can support their work, please contact Maro Matosian at [email protected].

This Week We Remember: March 9, 1997 Health Fair at St. Sarkis

St. Sarkis Church has been a pioneer in sponsoring Health Fairs starting in the early 80's and this tradition was continued on March 9, 1997 with "Health Expo '97"which was officially opened by Archbishop Mesrob Ashjian  and Marcie Kesner representing Claire Shulman, Queens Borough President.
Ms Kesner presented a "Citation of Honor" to St. Sarkis Church which was accepted on behalf of the church by the organizers, Dr. Arthur Kubikian, Dr. Louiza Puskulian-Kubikian and Dr. Aram Cazazian. The Health Fair involved the participation of over 40 health professionals and four major local hospitals, with lectures, diagnostic tests, videos and information on a number of medical conditions.
Over 450 people attended the fair and even Srpazan underwent some screening tests. St. Sarkis Community was honored with the participation of so many distinguished professionals.

We are excited to announce that on Sunday, May 31st , 2020 we will be celebrating the "30th Anniversary of St Sarkis Church & 15th Anniversary of Rev. Fr. Nareg Terterian, as Pastor." at   Larkfield Manor, East Northport, NY.

THE SECOND EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE   CORINTHIANS (6.1-7.1)
As God's co-workers we urge you not to receive God's grace in vain. For he says, "In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you."
I tell you, now is the time of God's favor, now is the day of salvation.
We put no stumbling block in anyone's path, so that our ministry will not be discredited. Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; in beatings, imprisonments and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger; in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love; in truthful speech and in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left; through glory and dishonor, bad report and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors; known, yet regarded as unknown; dying, and yet we live on; beaten, and yet not killed; sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything.
We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians, and opened wide our hearts to you. We are not withholding our affection from you, but you are withholding yours from us. As a fair exchange-I speak as to my children-open wide your hearts also.
Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: "I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people."
Therefore, "Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord.
Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you." And, "I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty."
Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST  ACCORDING TO LUKE (15:1-32 )
Now the tax collectors and "sinners" were all gathering around to hear him. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them."
Then Jesus told them this parable: "Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.' I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.
"Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Does she not light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.' In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents."
Jesus continued: "There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, 'Father, give me my share of the estate.' So he divided his property between them.
"Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.
"When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired men.' So he got up and went to his father.
"But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.
"The son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.'
"But the father said to his servants, 'Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let's have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' So they began to celebrate.
"Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. 'Your brother has come,' he replied, 'and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.'
"The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. But he answered his father, 'Look! All these years I've been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!'
'My son,' the father said, 'you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' "

Liturgical Calendar (From Crossroads: E-Newsletter of the Armenian Prelacy)
ST. CYRIL OF JERUSALEM
This Saturday, March 7, the Armenian Church commemorates St. Cyril of Jerusalem (315-386), a doctor of the church. St. Cyril had a pleasant and conciliatory disposition, but he lived at a time when bishops were embroiled in bitter controversies and were quick to condemn any attempts at compromise, even calling such attempts as treason. Sixteen years of his thirty-five years as a bishop were spent in exile. When a famine hit Jerusalem, he sold some of the possessions of the church to raise money for the poor starving people. He was condemned for selling church property and banished. His best known work that has survived, "The Catechetical Lectures," is believed to be one of the earliest systematic accounts of Christian theology. The lectures consist of an introductory lecture, followed by eighteen lectures on the Christian faith, given during Lent to those preparing to be baptized on Easter, and five lectures on the sacraments of baptism and Eucharist delivered after Easter. The lectures have been translated into many languages, including English and Armenian, and are noted for their presentation of the Christian faith in a positive light and maintaining a balance between correct belief and holy action.

Thousands of pilgrims would come to Jerusalem for Holy Week. Cyril instituted the liturgical forms for that week as they were observed in Jerusalem. A detailed account of Holy Week observances in Jerusalem in the fourth century is available thanks to a woman named Egeria (Etheria), believed to be a Spanish nun, who made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and kept a journal describing the liturgical practices at the various holy sites.

SUNDAY OF THE PRODIGAL SON
Our journey through Great Lent continues. This Sunday, March 8, is the Sunday of the Prodigal Son. The parable of the prodigal son shows God's fatherly love and eagerness to forgive those who repent (See the Gospel reading above).

Light from light, generation and down, you came to seek out the wondering sheep of our nature which you carried together with the cross on your shoulder; purify us also from our sins.

Holiest of the holy, purifier of those who exist, you swept your house, purified the world from sins and having found your image in it you renewed it, renew us also from our ancient sins.

With the prodigal son we cry out to you, tender-hearted Father, we have sinned against heaven and before you, the purifier from sins; come out with love to meet us, embrace us with a kiss and purify us from our sins.

Holy Mother of God, fountain of life which flowed from the heavenly Eden, which watered the thirsting earth with the Spirit's wisdom, pray that we may be given a fountain of tears for the cleansing of our sins.
