March 26th Grub Club lunch topic is Workplace Wellness
Our membership spoke and we listened! The Boyne Chamber surveyed our members and found strong interest in having a business luncheon several times a year.
 The #1 topic suggestion from our members was workplace wellness. That will be the topic of our first Grub Club lunch, presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield on Thursday, March 26th.
The event will make its debut in the Vienna Room of Boyne Mountain's Mountain Grand Lodge. Enjoy lunch and hear Timothy Amborski from McLaren Northern Michigan Family Practice speak on the importance of keeping you and your employees healthy.
Grub Club runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and admission is $25 for members and $30 for not-yet members. If you'd like to promote your business, vendor display tables are available for $200. Table sponsors receive two admission tickets, are introduced from the podium and can make a one-minute pitch on the microphone.
 Timothy Amborski, family nurse practitioner, has over 14 years of medical experience and practices at McLaren Northern Michigan Family Medicine. Timothy started his nursing career at McLaren Northern Michigan in 2004 after attending North Central Michigan College.
After working for the hospital for 7 years, Timothy started his Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) at Ferris State University. Just two months after receiving his BSN, Timothy started his Master of Science in Family Nurse Practitioner specialty from Chamberlain University.
Timothy has a special interest in men's health, family care, and elderly care. Preventative medicine, including screenings, healthy eating, and exercise are important tools in his method of care to patients.

Main Street façade grant applications now available
$20,000 to be invested into rehabilitation and improvement of downtown

Applications for Boyne City Main Street's 2020 façade grant program are now available. The façade grant program provides matching funds for Main Street District property owners and tenants to improve the facades of their buildings, in order to maintain the architectural character and economic viability of downtown.
"Boyne City Main Street looks forward to working with property owners to bring out the best in their buildings," Kelsie King-Duff, Boyne City Main Street Executive Director, said.
To begin the process, interested property owners or tenants must review the Facade Grant Program Guidelines, and meet with representatives from Boyne City Main Street to discuss the scope of the project. An application must then be submitted by noon on April 30. After a competitive review process by the Design Committee and Boyne City Main Street Board, a decision will be made on which projects receive funding. For every dollar awarded, the applicant must spend an equal amount. Individual grant amounts will be up to 50 percent of a project's cost. A total of $20,000 is available for the 2020-21 cycle.
Funds are provided by Boyne City Main Street with dollars raised through Boyne Thunder. There is no set minimum or maximum number of projects per year. Eligible items under the façade program include, but may not be limited to: removal of siding that was used to cover original building materials, exterior brick or wall surface repair, pointing of brick/mortar joint repair, window and/or door replacement/repair, any architectural details in need of repair and/or replacement. Ineligible expenses include paint, signage, awnings and work that has already been completed.
The grant program seeks to encourage private investment through the rehabilitation and improvement of facades within the Boyne City Main Street District, to encourage good design that will serve as quality examples, and to preserve the architectural character that is distinctive to Boyne City. By improving the appearance of the building facades, the program aims to improve the economic viability of the downtown.

St. Patrick's Pub Crawl is another hit and sells out again
 Boyne City's Second Annual St. Patrick's Day Pub Crawl is a sell-out, just like last year. Organizers sold 115 tickets for the event on Saturday, March 14th. Those lucky folks can pick up their souvenir shirts and glasses on the day of the event at Boyne City Tap Room. Everyone else is still welcome to visit the 11 restaurants and pubs that will be offering Irish-inspired food, beer and alcohol specials all day long. This is a non-profit event benefiting the Charlevoix Area Humane Society.

As we begin what can only be an outstanding 2020, it is time to start planning the 17th year of Stroll the Streets. The first Stroll the Streets will be June 12 and will run every Friday evening through September 4, 2020.
Stroll the Streets is one of Boyne City Main Street's signature events for our community - enjoyed by thousands of residents and visitors. Stroll the Streets is the perfect opportunity to display the friendly and welcoming community that is Boyne City. The positive image this event creates is invaluable to us all and impossible to put a price tag on.
Thousands of people visit downtown Boyne City during the thirteen Friday evenings throughout the season to dine at our many restaurants, shop in our stores, enjoy ice cream, dream about a second home - and come back the next day, next week, or next year to do it again.
While it is difficult to understand the direct impact to each of us, just doing simple math tells a great story. What if 1000 people spent an average of $20 every Friday night for thirteen weeks and just 5% was at your business? That is $13,000 in sales.

Already voted absentee? You may be able to change your vote
 Michigan's Presidential Primary Election is Tuesday, March 10th. How do you change your vote if you've already voted absentee and you've changed your mind or your candidate has dropped out? (The Democratic Party ballot will list 15 candidates, but as of March 4th, only four candidates were still active.)
A voter can spoil their ballot by submitting a written request to their city or township clerk. By mail, the deadline to spoil a ballot is Saturday at 2 p.m., and Monday at 4 p.m. in person at a clerk's office. While you're there, you can get a new absentee ballot or tell your clerk you'll vote at the polls.
If you decide you want to change your absentee vote on Election Day, you're out of luck. Officials can begin counting absentee ballots once the polls open at 7 a.m., so it's too late to change your vote on March 10.

Taste of Boyne will kick off Restaurant Week in April
 For our valued restaurants and food merchants:
We are excited to invite you to be a part of Boyne Appétit! Restaurant Week. We know we have the very best food-based establishments and restaurants in Northern Michigan and we want EVERYONE else to know it, too. The simple truth: Small town. Epic Food.
Because we listened to your feedback, we are adding some excitement to this fun week and will be doubling our efforts for the promotion of this event, which includes on-air ads, radio ads, rack cards, and poster distribution. We want to be sure that your name is included where possible!
There will be only one Restaurant Week this year and it will be held April 24th through May 3rd. Your participation in Restaurant Week is free, of course, so please complete this Restaurant Week registration form and return it no later than March 1st.
To kick-off our Restaurant Week, we are excited to offer a new event: The Taste of Boyne. This is designed to invite the community for a food tasting but also to allow you and your business the opportunity to taste and mingle with others in your line of work. Held at the Boyne Mountain Civic Center on Thursday, April 23, 2020, from 5:30 until 8:30, there will be no participation cost for your establishment and we ask that you provide "tastes" of your choice for 300 people, in addition to the appropriate staff to work the event. The Taste of Boyne registration form needs to be returned before March 1st. This form is separate from the Restaurant Week form.
But that's not all that is new! In an effort to promote your business year round, the folks that attend Taste of Boyne (there is an entrance fee for attending) will be receiving a punch card that is good for a year. This card will be taken to participating merchants and when ten $10 purchases are made, they will be entered into a drawing for a $50 gift certificate. To do this well, we are asking you to provide us a $50 Gift Certificate prior to the Taste of Boyne evening. By doing so, your establishment will be listed on the punch card. Once a card holder has completed their card, they will be entered for our monthly drawing for one of the provided gift cards.

The Boyne Chamber's next Off The Clock will be hosted by Lynda's Real Estate Service at 27 S. Lake St., and will be cosponsored by Family Fare Supermarket. The event will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 19th and includes door prizes, food, drink, business networking and a 50/50 raffle with proceeds going to a nonprofit organization. Off The Clock is the new name for Business After Hours, the chamber's monthly business networking event held at member businesses. Health Dept. says to "prepare not panic" for Coronavirus
 The Health Department of Northwest Michigan is continuously working on preparedness and response planning for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). Communication occurs daily with federal, state and local officials/partners. The Health Department is monitoring the situation at a local level and coordinating efforts with other area health departments. Michigan - including Antrim, Charlevoix, Emmet and Otsego Counties - has no confirmed cases at this time.
As COVID-19 cases increase worldwide, including in the United States, it is important to be mindful of preparing for a shift from an epidemic to a pandemic. At this time, we are encouraging our communities to prepare, not panic. It is still uncertain when COVID-19 will impact the greater United States, for how long, or the severity, and information is changing on a daily basis.
Health Officer Lisa Peacock reminds residents that "It is important to consider actions to reduce the spread of illness in general - things like staying home if you are ill, coughing into an elbow or tissue, and frequent hand washing are important. While the situation is regularly changing, it is also important to stay up to date with reliable sources and to begin identifying some actions that can help protect your health and those you care about."

Truestream fiber internet info session planned Wednesday
 Great Lakes Energy and Truestream will host a fiber internet informational session on Wednesday, March 11th at Petoskey Middle School from 4:30-7 p.m. The event is free and open to Great Lakes Energy electric members who are eligible for Truestream, the cooperative's new fiber internet and voice network. Truestream is currently available to Great Lakes Energy members in parts of Charlevoix and Emmet counties with expansion beginning into Antrim County and more of Charlevoix County this year.
Event attendees will learn more about Truestream's service offerings, which include internet plans with speeds up to 1 Gig with no data caps and no contracts. The event also includes an educational how-to session on streaming TV services. Petoskey Middle School is located at 801 Northmen Drive.

 McLaren Northern Michigan is proud to announce they are a verified Level II Trauma Center by the Verification Review Committee, an ad hoc committee of the American College of Surgeons. This achievement recognizes the commitment of McLaren Northern Michigan to providing optimal care for injured patients.
McLaren Northern Michigan has pledged to enhance trauma capabilities in order to provide access to high-quality trauma care to northern Michigan and surrounding areas. This achievement confirms the ongoing commitment to doing what's best for northern Michigan patients.
"We recognized that there was a need for higher level trauma care in northern Michigan," stated Todd Burch, President & CEO of McLaren Northern Michigan. "We serve a large rural geographic area that immediately benefits from an advanced level of care. Surgery center plans March 17th open house in Business Park
 Northern Michigan Surgical Suites is planning an Open House at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 17th. This new state-of-the-art, multi-specialty outpatient surgical center is located at 825 Moll Drive in the Boyne City Business Park. The surgical center plans to open a few days before the open house. It is designed to give patients, friends and family a relaxing experience before, during and after the procedure. A group of 13 surgeons are affiliated with the center. Their website says: "Northern Michigan Surgical Suites also provides a high ratio of medical staff to patients in order to provide the highest quality experience and attentive care. The surgeons choose the best staff to take care of you during your time with us and the highest quality equipment for your procedure. You may rest assured that the Center meets the highest industry standards in health care."

Giving up something for Lent? How about giving to someone for Lent? Good Neighbors Food Pantry suggests giving to your neighbors in need. The pantry could use your help with the following: chicken noodle soup, cream of mushroom soup, tuna fish, and macaroni and cheese. Items can be dropped off at the pantry at 624 State St. on Mondays from 1-2:30 p.m., or Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m.-noon and 1:30-5:30 p.m.

Challenge Mountain welcomed its newest board of directors member, Caren Peltier, at its January meeting. After 32 years in the corporate world, Peltier retired and moved to Boyne City with her husband Tom in 2018. Rotary plans monthly open meeting March 16 at Cafe Sante
 The Boyne City Rotary Club will hold an "open meeting" at 6 p.m. Monday, March 16, at Cafe Sante. The public is invited to attend and learn how Rotary contributes to the Boyne community and how their service projects benefit people around the world. This meeting will take the place of the usual weekly meeting held at 7 a.m. on the first, second and fourth Mondays of the month at the Boyne District Library Community Room. Startup Fundamentals workshop offered in Charlevoix
The Small Business Development Center is sponsoring a free Startup Fundamentals workshop from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, in Charlevoix. The Startup Fundamentals workshop is intended for individuals in the beginning stages of starting a business, in need of accessing capital, or simply considering self-employment. This introductory session helps aspiring entrepreneurs assess their abilities to lead and manage a company, as well as evaluate market and sales potential for their products/services. This comprehensive 2.5-hour workshop also incorporates the SBDC's fundamental Writing a Business Plan workshop and fully covers topics such as determining concept feasibility, startup costs, financing options, the basics of business planning, along with other necessary resources to launch. The workshop features instruction by SBDC Small Business Consultant Samantha McDonald and is a prerequisite to meeting with a SBDC consultant one-on-one.

 Beginning in March the content offered at the Lifetree Café will focus on a discipleship series titled, "Friends With God." Each episode includes a video presentation and discussion in a fun and engaging environment. It is non-denominational in nature and utilizes the friendship model of relationship found taught by Jesus in John 15:15. Performers announced for expanded Gazebo concert season
 The Boyne Area Chamber has announced its Evenings at the Gazebo schedule, and we are excited to offer an extended season with 10 concerts this summer. The 2020 series is presented by Black Diamond Broadcasting with concerts held in Old City Park on Wednesday evenings beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Concerts are made possible by additional support from local businesses and individual sponsors. Seven of the 10 concert sponsorships are still available. Band sponsors are featured on a logo banner displayed at all concerts and they get to introduce the band on concert nights. Sponsors also have their name or logo included on all promotional materials, listed on our website, listed in our weekly newsletter, and on Facebook.

Walloon Lake Inn offers specials and is now open all year

Conservation District plans paint parties, tree sale, plat book
The Charlevoix Conservation District is planning paint parties, a tree sale and a new county plat book. Here are the details"
PAINT PARTY - The district has partnered with Gaudy Giggles and will be hosting Paint Parties on March 7th and the first Saturday of each month at 9:45 a.m. in their office Community Room, 303 North St, Boyne City. BCHS Drama is presenting George Gershwin's 2012 Tony Award-winning musical, "Nice Work If You Can Get It." Performances will be in the Boyne City High School Performing Arts Center March 13, 14, 20 & 21 at 7 pm.
This screwball comedy is a surefire crowd-pleaser, with classic Gershwin tunes, romance, exuberant production numbers, and a hilarious script poking fun at class snobbery in the Prohibition era of the 1920's. The storyline might be new to you, but you will recognize classic songs such as Fascinating Rhythm, Someone to Watch Over Me, S'wonderful, I've Got a Crush on You, Let's Call the Whole Thing Off and Lady Be Good.  The Boyne Falls Public School Alumni Game will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 14th in the school gymnasium. Churches plan benefit dinner to build church in Nicaragua
 Boyne Valley Catholic Community (BVCC), comprised of St. Augustine (Boyne Falls), St. John Nepomucene (Praga), and St. Matthew (Boyne City) churches, is planning a benefit dinner to help build a new church in Nicaragua. Boyne Valley's sister parish, Our Lord of Veracruz, is building the church in El Cacao, Nicaragua. The condition and size of the old church necessitated a replacement, and with the depressed economic conditions in El Cacao, BVCC is stepping up to help.
The dinner is scheduled for 12 noon on Sunday, March, 22 at the St. Matthew Parish Hall at 1303 Boyne Ave. in Boyne City. A menu of authentic Nicaraguan food will be offered, along with a program of Nicaraguan entertainment. Cost of the benefit dinner is a free-will donation made at the door. Vendor applications for the summer version of the Boyne City Farmers Market are now available here. The registration deadline is March 13th. The summer market is held in Veterans Park on Wednesdays and Saturdays from May 16 through October 17.
The indoor Winter Market
continues from 9 a.m. to noon each Saturday in the lobby of Boyne City Hall. This year-round Farmers Market is packed full of beautiful produce, greens, homemade goodies and much more.

College lecture looks at 'Redistricting the New Way'
 North Central Michigan College's Luncheon Lecture series for the winter semester continues on a variety of topics on Fridays in the College Library Conference Center. MARCH 13 - REDISTRICTING THE NEW WAY. In November 2018, Michigan voters approved the "Voters Not Politicians" constitutional amendment that makes a commission of 13 randomly selected citizens responsible for drawing district lines for the Michigan Senate, Michigan House of Representatives and U.S. Congress. You can apply to be a member of the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission and help draw the new lines resulting from the 2020 census. Sally Marsh, director of special projects for Michigan's Secretary of State, explains it all.

Senior center celebrates St. Patrick's Day with Irish lunch
 Come Celebrate St. Patrick's Day at the Boyne Area Senior Center on Tuesday, March 17th. We have a traditional Corned Beef & Cabbage meal and activities planned.
