BWE Jump for the Hills

The annual Jump Rope event is on Monday, February 24. This year we will be Jumping for the Hills. The North Allegheny Health and Physical Education Department is partnering with the North Hills Community Outreach Center to promote healthy living. Jumping rope teaches participants about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and offers them the opportunity to provide vital community service to discover that they can make a difference in someone else’s life.

Families have the option to make a donation to the NHCO to support their many community programs. To learn more about the NHCO organization or, if you would like to donate to the North Hills Community Outreach, please visit the Jump For the Hills website. Checks may be written out to NHCO and any cash donations may be turned into Mrs. Frisco.

Collecting donations is optional but all students will be participating in the jumping event during their physical education class on February 24. Thank you in advance for your support. If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Frisco.

Read Across America Day at BWE

Monday, March 2, 2020 is Read Across America Day – the day we celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday and reading! We will be having two special events that day.

The first event is that we’ll be having DEAR time twice during the day. DEAR time means Drop Everything and Read. The announcement could be made at any time during the day, so all students and staff members must have a book to read that day. Everyone must carry their book around with them everywhere, except to Outdoor Recess, Lunch and the rest room. When the announcement is made, everyone must sit down wherever they are and read for 10 minutes. Be sure you have a book with you at all times that day!

We will also have special visitors at the end of the day to help us celebrate reading! Seniors from the high school who attended Bradford Woods in elementary school will be coming to each classroom to read a Dr. Seuss book. If you know a senior who is a BWE alumni, please encourage them to attend!

Sign-Up Today for the Kids of STEEL Program presented by Giant Eagle

Parents, you can register your child to participate in the 2020 Kids of STEEL program and the Kids Marathon presented by Giant Eagle. The Kids of STEEL Program challenges children to run 26.2 miles over the course of 18-weeks, culminating with the Toyota of Pittsburgh Kids Marathon on May 2, 2020.

To encourage healthy eating habits, kids are asked to taste and study different fruits and vegetables. All you have to do is register your child online and start logging what your child runs and tastes!

Kids of STEEL Marathon Parent Letter

Dear Parent/Guardian,

We are so pleased to share with you that Bradford Woods Elementary is a Kids of STEEL team! We invite your child to be part of the fun! Join us by following the link for the Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon at thepittsburghmarathon.com/kidsmarathon and select our team from the drop down menu on the registration page.

The 1-mile Pittsburgh Kids Marathon is a fun way for kids (and their families) to participate in the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend of events. This event, to take place on Saturday, May 2, 2020, is also the culminating race for Kids of STEEL participants following the Kids Marathon training plan.

Each child who register for the Kids Marathon ($20) receives:
  • a confidence boost that comes from setting and achieving a goal
  • curriculum and training plan to inspire healthy habits! Kids of STEEL was awarded “Youth Running Program of the Year” by Running USA.
  • a free entry for an adult to join them on the course
  • race shirt
  • finisher prize
  • finisher medal
  • goody bag!
Please be sure to select our site from the list to ensure that your child is registered with our team in order to ensure your child’s shirt is delivered to our site. Your race registration serves as the permission slip for the program.
I’m so excited to be joining you and your child in one of the country’s largest kid’s races! If you have any questions, please contact me at bfrisco@northallegheny.org.

Sincerely,

Beth Frisco

Health and Physical Education Teacher
Bradford Woods Elementary

PS: If you have a child in your family who would also like to participate in Marathon weekend but the 1-mile course isn’t right for them, the Sheetz Pittsburgh Toddler Trot and the UPMC Health Plan / UPMC Sports Medicine Pittsburgh 5K Run takes place on the same day as the Kids Marathon! Learn more at kidsofsteel.org/races.
