Praise God with tambourine and dance;
praise the Lord with strings and pipe!
--Psalm 150:4

The pipe organ is to be held in high esteem, for it is the traditional musical instrument which adds a wonderful splendor to the Church’s ceremonies and powerfully lifts up our minds to God and to higher things.
-- Second Vatican Council, Sacrosanctum Concilium 120

About 3 years ago, something strange began to happen at Trinity. On certain days, the cathedral organ would suddenly no longer play. The reliability of the instrument became a major issue. How can we hold recitals on Fridays during Lent when we don’t know if the instrument is going to work or not? The question was valid and rather terrifying.

After our canon musician and technicians began their diagnostics of the instrument, we soon discovered a malfunction with the main computer controls for the instrument. Even though the right stops were pulled, the organ console was not in sync with the instrument itself. What was the fix? At the time, we did not entirely know. Thankfully, those involved in our organ’s maintenance were attempting every possible fix. Through their efforts, the glorious music at Trinity Cathedral continued, even as our organ’s capabilities continued to decline.

Shortly before Christmas in 2018, almost everything in the organ ceased to play, with the exception of one manual and a few pedal stops. The glorious Schantz instrument, once hailed as the finest new instrument in Arizona, was quickly becoming a mere remnant of itself. Something had to be done.

The people of Trinity Cathedral began seeking out experts for a solution. A team sought bids from national vendors to fix the problem, and later, brainstormed how to pay for such a repair. Thanks to your abundant generosity, the funds were quickly raised, and by the end of Summer 2019, much of the repairs had finally been completed.

This Sunday marks a milestone in the life of Trinity Cathedral. This Sunday, we rededicate our cathedral organ to the glory of God, and we celebrate you in the process. Your generosity was absolutely essential in making this restoration happen!

In fact, this entire weekend will be a glorious celebration of music. On Sunday at 10 a.m., you are invited to come for special music, dedicatory prayers, and a festive liturgy celebrating the Transfiguration of Our Lord on this Last Sunday of the Epiphany. After our morning worship is over, the cathedral’s sanctuary will get ready for even more splendor, when the people of Trinity Cathedral host a very special organ recital at 3 p.m.

The organ rededication concert will be performed by educator, scholar, and sacred music advocate Janette Fishell, who currently serves as Chair of the Organ Department at Indiana University. In a concert entitled, “Dances Celestial and Sinister,” Dr. Fishell will feature works by William Byrd, Alexandre Guilmant, and Camille Saint-Saëns. The concert is free and open to the public. Don’t miss this spectacular event!

All of our time together at Trinity Cathedral, whether we are engaged in worship, fellowship, or service, is dedicated to God. Our mission remains clear -- through our participation in the full life of Trinity’s community, we are continuously transformed into the people whom God calls us to be. The presence of Christ is with us in everything we do, and praising God with glorious liturgy and musical offerings calls us into a greater reality than the world we immediately perceive. When we listen to great music, when we gather for common prayer, when we live our lives serving others, we are stepping out of the world that we know and we are stepping into the Kingdom of God. We may not know it, but our lives are forever changed.

Join us this Sunday and see an even greater glimpse of God’s glory. Join us to embark on your own personal transformation in the Kingdom of God. Join us to celebrate our life, our labor, and our gift of music that feeds our souls. God will surely be praised!

In Christ’s peace and love,
