Potluck Brunch and Art Show

This Sunday we celebrate the many artists among us with an exhibition of artwork from the members and friends of Holy Cross. We will also celebrate the wonderful bounty of delights to tempt our taste buds as we join together in a potluck brunch. The fun begins following worship - hope you will join us!
For those who are displaying art work - please plan on dropping off your item(s) tomorrow, Saturday, at the church between 2 and 4 pm. If you are not available then please contact Judy Cater, if you have not done so, to make other arrangements.

Sunday, following the event to help with clean-up.

Ash Wednesday (from the Latin
Dies Cinerum
, meaning "Day of Ashes")
marks the start of the season of Lent which is the forty days, excluding Sundays, between Ash Wednesday and Easter (
April 12th)
.
Ashes are referred to many times in the Old Testament as a sign of sorrow, mourning, repentance, and mortality (2 Samuel 13:19; Esther 4:1-3; Job 42:6; and Jeremiah 6:26).
On this day, we will gather, along with Christians throughout the world, to begin our Lenten journey with the darkness of ashes. During the service the ashes will be applied, in the sign of the cross, to the forehead of each attendee with the words "Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return". The mark made by the ashes is a powerful reminder of our mortality and frailty. And, from there we will begin our journey...
Lent is a journey, a journey which has been taken each year for centuries by many Christians throughout the world. Our journey begins with the darkness of ashes and concludes with the light that breaks on Easter morning. During this journey we are called to follow a path of discovery to take on new ways to grow our faith - through prayer, study, worship and reflection. It is a path that ends with one being ready to truly celebrate the meaning of Easter.
Lent is not a journey to be taken alone. It is meant to be experienced in community, surrounded by others, all of us continuing to grow as brothers and sisters in Christ. We bear each other’s burdens and struggles. We share and celebrate in each other’s joys. We forgive each other as we are forgiven by God. We pray for each other and earnestly try to love each other as God unconditionally loves us. That is what being part of a worship community means and it is why
church matters
. God uses the smaller community of the church to help us learn how to live together in God’s greater creation, the world.
Lent is a special time set aside for us to study how we live together – with God, with others, and with ourselves. This is a valuable time, perhaps a time to deprive and discipline yourself if you find that helpful, but also a time to explore. Lent can be a time of joy and discovery.
We hope you will take that journey of discovery during Lent to grow your faith and prepare for the celebration of Easter. Here are some resources to help you in your Lenten Journey:

Temptation and Lent:
An event from the Book of Genesis
Sunday, February 23

Teacher: “Lent is observed from Ash Wednesday to the Saturday before Easter; it’s 40 days.”
Student: “Oh no it’s not! There are 46 days in that time period – can’t you count?”
T: “Well, I forgot to tell you that the six Sundays following Ash Wednesday are not included in Lent.”
S: “Oh goody! That means I can eat candy on Sundays?”
Whether you want to munch on candies on Sunday or not, Lent is a special time in the Christian year. It’s “40” days set aside for reflection, for contemplation, for discipline. And there are reasons for the number “40”. After his baptism, Jesus retired to the desert for “40” days to pray and to face temptation.
In the Hebrew Scriptures, the Jews wondered for “40” years in the desert. During those years they were tempted to rebel against God and their leadership. They erected an idol – a golden calf. But those years also saw the Jews receive the Ten Commandments. They began to codify their moral and religious lives.
You’re faced with the temptation to eat candy. Jesus was faced with more consequential temptations from Satan. The Jews were faced with the temptation of impatience with God.
And the most famous temptation is that faced by Adam and Eve in their utopian garden. That is the subject of a PBS program form the 1990’s. Led by Bill Moyers, experts from several faiths and academic disciplines discuss the meaning of that temptation event as part of a series on
Genesis. Their conversation is riveting and worth your time to watch. We are giving you that chance on Sunday, February 23
rd following our regular worship (and an abbreviated coffee hour). We’ll watch it on the big screen.
Come to watch the program with other members of the congregation, and then to react to what we have watched. It will be well worth your while.

Neighbors in Faith
Next Picnic in the Park February 27th
5 pm - Magee Park in Carlsbad
Neighbors in Faith provides a simple meal to our homeless friends at Potluck in the Park in Magee Park, Carlsbad.
Meal preparation will take place at the church in the afternoon before the meal - this is a great way to get involved with the ministry if you can't make it out to the park. Contact Brian Petersen if you are interested in volunteering, either at the church or at the park.

A Journey of Discernment
Many of you are aware that Brian Petersen has been discerning if God's call for him is ordained ministry. This type of discernment is a lengthy process in which an individual enters into periods of reflection, discussion and discernment. To assist Brian, Holy Cross, as part of the diocesan discernment process, has established a Congregational Discernment Committee. The Discernment Committee consists of two trained facilitators from the diocese, and three members of Holy Cross - Bob Meloon and Cathy and Jim Zolner. This committee will be meeting with Brian on a regular basis over the next several months and together they will pray, talk and discern what God's call for Brian's future ministry might be. This step of Brian's journey is but one part of a larger diocesan discernment process. The final outcome of this journey for Brian may be either an affirmation of the call to ordained ministry or to the continuation of the call to lay ministry.
We ask that you understand the conversations from these meetings are deeply personal and will be held in confidence. Please keep Brian and the Discernment Committee in your prayers.

Pastoral Update
A message from Tom Mauro:
Ann is at home and continues to recover day by day. Every day is a better day.
Long term prognosis is very good, but it will take a while for her blood to be reabsorbed back into the surrounding tissue.
The big card from Holy Cross and all the individual cards and prayers have really meant an awful lot to Ann and to me. They certainly help with her recovery.

Eucharistic Visits
This ministry is an extension of our Celebration of the Eucharist each week - bread and wine that has been blessed on Sunday is reserved for our Lay Eucharist Visitors to take to those who are unable to join us.
To arrange for a Lay Eucharistic visit please contact the church office at 760.930.1270.
Muriel Wahl, our lay Pastoral Ministry leader, will be notified of your need and she, or a member of the team, will contact you to make arrangements for a visit. Please let the office know if you wish to have a visit on Sunday following worship or another day of the week.

Bishop's Committee
Bishop's Committee meetings are open to anyone who would like to attend. Any church member may ask any BC member to speak on their behalf or on behalf of a proposal they wish to forward. Meetings are held the third Wednesday of the month from 6 pm - 8:30 pm. The next BC meeting is Wednesday, February 19th.
