Our Bears have certainly settled into the new school year by this point as we are now well into week #3 of 2018-2019. Next week is only a four-day school week due to the Labor Day holiday on Monday.

We wish our varsity football team continued success coming off last week's victory vs. Windermere as they will play at home Friday evening vs. the East River Falcons. With the long weekend ahead, I do hope you and your family will come out and cheer on our Bears!

Thank you for looking over this latest issue and enjoy the rest of your week!

Student Success Story Follow-Up: News Media Pitch
Follow-up on a STEM success story with two of our Bears . . .

In our last issue, we shared some insights on two very motivated Bears. Their work has since been passed along to News Channel 6 for possible production.

The first prototype was made primarily of cardboard, but as you can see, is now much more advanced.
Students Jonathan Miranda and Ibrahim Khater have made a working prosthetic arm using parts made from different household objects! The arm works through taping the sensors to a hand, which then send movement data to a microchip that then sends a radio signal to a different microchip that then controls some servos to move the hand. This year, they hope to make the whole device out of 3D printed parts, and experiment using EKG/EEG sensors within the arm.

The boys' long-term professional goals are to become an artificial intelligence creator (Jonathan) and a biomedical engineer (Ibrahim). They are certainly on the right course!

This Week's Motivational Moment!

USE YOUR PAUSE BUTTON

Taking time to reflect rather than charging ahead with action after action is crucial to learning the entire scope of what you're doing or studying. Reflection often leads to a better understanding of course material as a student or in your job as a member of the work force.

Reflective leaders include Abraham Lincoln, who once said: "Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe." And Warren Buffett (the 3rd wealthiest American behind Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates) has admitted he isn't as busy as some other legendary workaholic CEOs who work 80-hour weeks. He has stated that he's spent 80% of his career reading and thinking.

The lesson for our Bears? Time is usually wasted in the same way every day. Stopping once in awhile to know what you're doing and why pays off, big, but it must not be a one-time activity. Taking a little time to reflect will help you better understand course content and may often prove most inspirational.

Have a safe and relaxing Labor Day holiday weekend.
