Announcements
Dr. Sylvia Whitlock, the first female Rotary President in the world ( and a DG in District 5300 in 2012- 2013) will be visiting the Bay Area of Oregon on March 2 and 3rd. In the late 1970's, some forward thinking men in the Rotary Club of Duarte, California decided to ask women into their club as members. What followed were 10 plus years of court cases with RI. In 1987, the US Supreme Court handed down a decision( that appears in most lawbooks) that required Rotary clubs worldwide to no longer restrict membership to only males .
President Michelle Coradetti ( Medford) and I met Dr. Whitlock in Hamburg at the RI Convention in June. There is no charge for her presentations and they are open to everyone, not just Rotarians. You and any members of your club are invited to attend one or both of these presentations- Monday, March 2 at 6 pm at the Hales Performing Arts Center on the Southwestern Oregon Community College campus or Tuesday, March 3 at noon at the Mill Casino in North Bend in the Salmon Room. In her book, " Women Also Serve", Dr. Whilock wrote " I count Rotarians among some of the most creative, courageous, inspiring and generous people I have ever met. I am proud to be a Rotarian."
Dr. Whitlock is 84. This month, February she will be volunteering for the 10th time at the Piyali School for Girls near Calcutta, India. That school was founded by a Rotarian who studied under Mother Teresa.
If you would like to attend these presentations, please let President Bill know.
