San Francisco Giants 5 v. Texas Rangers 3
In the Giants game against the Texas Rangers on Saturday, Aug. 25 at AT&T Park, players donned uniforms with chosen nicknames on the back and San Francisco's All-Star Brandon Crawford sported DJ BC RAW. (The event, called "Players Weekend," allowed players to put nicknames on the backs of jerseys, wear fluorescent-colored shoes and personalize a patch on their uniform paying tribute to someone.) Perhaps it helped, as Crawford stroked a three-run home run in the first inning to stake the Giants to an early lead they never gave up.
|
Hunter Pence, making a pinch hitting appearance in the seventh inning, carried UNDERPANTS to the plate. Pence added to the Giants lead with a solo home run and extended their lead to 5-0. Texas made a late run in the eighth and ninth innings, before falling, 5-3.
|
Buster Posey, the Giants six-time All-Star and NL Comeback Player of the Year (2011), appeared for the last time in a Giants uniform this season. Posey left town on Sunday for scheduled hip surgery on Monday in Vail, Colorado and will require six to eight months to heal. Assuming all goes well, Posey could return to the lineup by the start of the 2019 season. To view an album of the game on our website, visit www.UltimateSportsGuide.net. Photo by Rich Yee.

Cal Bears -- Receiver Marcel Dancy
For The Kids -- Marcel Dancy is motivated to be an inspiration for the youth of Oakland
Marcel Dancy seems to do all the right things.
Since taking his first reps with the California football team during training camp, the running back from Oakland has been impressing coaches and teammates. Dancy is also wise beyond his years. He learned at a young age how important it is to stay on the right path if he really wanted to find success playing football. After earning his spot with the Golden Bears -- his dream school since he was a youngster growing up in Oakland -- Dancy is determined to take advantage of his opportunity to be an inspiration for Oakland youth. He hopes to instill the same mindset of working hard and staying on the right path that he learned when he was their age. "My motivation is to play in the NFL, but along that journey, I want to show kids how important it is to make the right decisions, not only in football but in life," Dancy said. "It's cool to go to school and I try to lead by example with that." Before he snapped on a Cal helmet for the first time, Dancy played two seasons at Laney College in Oakland. During his time at Laney, he met Thirland Ross, head coach of the Oakland Dynamites Pop Warner football team. They met through Ross' son, Mekhi, who played on a flag football team with Dancy. After chatting with Dancy for a bit, Ross was impressed with his football knowledge and asked him if he would like to meet the kids he coaches and teach them more about the game of football. Dancy jumped at the opportunity. "He's great with the kids," Ross said. "The kids can relate to him because he had the same upbringing. Growing up in Oakland, you don't see a lot of people who give back the way he does. He teaches them that there's more to football besides what you do on the field. He tells them to make sure they're a student first and to make sure their grades are good. He tells them to respect their parents and give back when you can."
Dancy with the Oakland Dynamites
Dancy considers himself to be a big brother to the Dynamites. They can call him whenever they need anything, and he frequently checks in with Ross to see on how the team is doing.
Growing up, Dancy's family was instrumental in showing him the right path, and now he's trying to return the favor to kids he considers to be his younger brothers.
"I was lucky enough to have a lot of people looking out after me when I was a kid," Dancy said. "They made sure I stayed out of trouble and stayed focused on what I was trying to do. I'm trying to pay my family back by guiding everybody who looks up to me now."
Dancy's father, Daryl, said that while he's proud of how much his son cares about the kids, he isn't surprised.
"He is a really good man," Daryl said. "He cares about everybody and everything. That's rare coming from some of the places that people come from. He truly cares about people. It doesn't matter who you are or where you come from."
Growing up, Dancy attended a few Cal games and watched many more on TV. While he was attending West High School in Tracy, he participated in a Cal camp where he was coached by former Cal standout and current Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff. Not only did Goff and Dancy bond during that camp, but Goff was the one who told running backs coach Burl Toler III
and the rest of the coaching staff that Dancy could be the real deal.
Toler remembers meeting Dancy at that camp and being very impressed with his talent and personality. "It's funny because the guys who were at that camp in 2014 and are still here remember Marcel because he stood out that much," Toler said. "He was so determined and just got after it. He had the same mature personality back then and that also really stood out to me. I'm so happy to see things come to fruition for him with this opportunity and to see him take advantage of it."
Dancy with Jared Goff. Photo courtesy Cal Athletics
Head coach Justin Wilcox
has also taken notice of Dancy.
"He's a quick guy who makes powerful and decisive cuts," Wilcox said. "We're excited about what he's doing. He's got to continue to build off of what he's done so far. It's a competitive situation at running back, but he's going all-in on it. Every single day the guy brings it."
Dancy credits Kevin Parker -- Cal's former director of player development -- in being instrumental with him joining the Bears. A childhood inspiration on and off the field for Dancy was former Cal standout running back Marshawn Lynch. Dancy volunteers at Lynch's Fam1st camps and Lynch is a family friend of the Dancys. Dancy shares the same goal as Lynch of trying to make positive change in as many lives as possible. He hopes to follow in his role model's footsteps into the NFL and earn the opportunity to teach and inspire on a larger scale. "When you get a platform like that, you have two options -- you can just worry about yourself and take care of yourself, or you can take as many people as you can with you, and that's what I'm trying to do," Dancy said. "I'm trying to help put as many of these kids as I can in a position to succeed." While there will be a lot of kids rooting for Dancy on the football field, he will be rooting for them in life.

Fifth-year seniors strong safety Brandon Simmons (2) and cornerback Alameen Murphy (4)
were among six players selected to lead the team in 2018
STANFORD, Calif.

Murphy and Simmons were each captains last season. Murphy, a cornerback and native of Fort Washington, Maryland, has played in every game over the last two seasons. A science, technology and society graduate pursuing his master's degree in media studies, Murphy is a three-time Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention. Simmons, a free safety and communication major from Mansfield, Texas, was All-Pac-12 honorable mention each of the last two years.
A product of Inman, South Carolina, Arcega-Whiteside was All-Pac-12 honorable mention last season after he led the team in receptions (48), receiving yards (781) and receiving touchdowns (9). The international relations major was a Pac-12 All-Academic selection in 2016.
Love, a human biology major from Wake Forest, North Carolina, was last year's Doak Walker Award winner, Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year and Lombardi Award winner. He paced Power 5 running backs in rushing yards, rushing yards/game, yards/carry and number of runs of 20, 30, 40 and 50 yards, and his 13 runs of 50 or more yards set an FBS record.
A management science and engineering graduate pursuing his master's degree in media studies, Okereke was third on the team with 96 tackles last season. The Santa Ana, California, native was an All-Pac-12 honorable mention selection.
Costello started seven games for the Cardinal last year and finished with 1,573 passing yards and 14 touchdowns. A native of Coto de Caza, California, the political science major earned Pac-12 All-Academic honors last season.
Stanford begins the 2018 campaign on Aug. 31 against San Diego State. Kickoff at Stanford Stadium is set for 6 p.m. PT. on FS1.

Sonoma Raceway -- Wine Country Speed Festival
Wine Country Speed Festival revs up historic racing in Sonoma
SONOMA, Calif. -- Sonoma Raceway's annual June historic-car racing weekend, which has spanned more than 30 years, will take a spin under new management in 2019. Jeff O'Neill will lead the new group with plans to create a world-class event which will delight not only the drivers, but provide an extraordinary venue for spectators to enjoy these rare cars. O'Neill has tapped Cris Vandagriff to partner on this event.
The rebranded Wine Country Speed Festival is slated for May 31-June 2, 2019 on Sonoma Raceway's traditional 12-turn, 2.52-mile road course. The event will draw inspiration from top-tier motorsports events around the world to deliver an incredible collection of authentic historic cars, a great on-track experience for drivers and an interactive and enjoyable spectator event in the heart of California's premier wine-growing region.
"I am delighted to be part of the historic Sonoma Raceway," said O'Neill. "As the track celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2019, this event will showcase the amazing cars and drivers that made the track a part of motor-racing history."
With more than 60 years of historic racing between them, O'Neill and Vandagriff plan to create an immersive paddock experience which transports fans and drivers to different eras of motorsports history and feature legendary race cars and drivers while incorporating delicious food and wine from Sonoma's best vintners and chefs.
O'Neill is the founder of O'Neill Vintners & Distillers, one of California's largest wine producers. Away from the vineyard, O'Neill has a longstanding passion for historic car racing and collecting, including piloting his own Maserati 250F and Maserati Tipo 61 on track. Vandagriff, a third generation driver and organizer, brings a wealth of experience in historic racing.

Oakland A's roll on with a memorable home run from Khris Davis
|
Before Monday's game on Aug. 20, against the visiting Texas Rangers, 10-year-old Anthony Slocumb, in the company of Make-A-Wish Foundation members and in remission from cancer, signed the jersey of Oakland A's outfielder Khris Davis. In the third inning Davis hit a mammoth home run, estimated to have traveled 438 feet. Said Davis afterwards, "I wanted to rock that. I wanted him to know that I was thinking about him. He just told me I was his favorite and he was here to watch me play. I thought about (Slocumb) around the bases. There's not a better feeling than hitting a home run, so hopefully he got some excitement and joy from watching that." Photo by Kenny Karst.

DEADLINE--Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, Calif.
FRIDAY, August 17 -- With my wife, son and daughter (both visiting from out of town) I was an eyewitness to the most exciting play of the year.
One out in the ninth, we are down by a run. After getting behind 0-2, and everybody in the yard convinced we were gonna lose that game, Nick Martini smokes a double past Reddick, followed by Ramon Laureano's mad dash around the bases with 23,000 A's fans on their feet screaming, and...out at the plate! The horror!!
BUT WAIT!! LAUREANO JUMPING UP SCREAMING AT MELVIN TO FORCE THE REPLAY, KNOWING HE WAS BARELY SAFE, YELLING OUT "NO NO" WHILE SHAKING HIS FINGER LIKE GODDAMN DIKEMBE MUTOMBO SWATTING AWAY A SHOT AT THE RIM. OMG!
And then...overturned by replay, and the almost anti-climactic but just as magical Matt Olson walk-off. What a game...awesome...lost in the excitement were two brilliant innings by Kelley and Pagan--this bullpen is DEEP!
SATURDAY--I thought for sure the Astros would be so pissed off after getting (in their eyes) screwed that Keuchel might throw a no-no at us and they'd jump all over Cahill and light him up, but NO! Eight doubles, Trevor Cahill seven innings, one hit , no runs one walk and plenty of K's. I'm f---ing speechless. And now we're tied with Houston. Can you believe this?
* * * * * * * * * * * *
MONDAY -- How 'bout that Mike Fiers? Ramon "five-tool" Laureano?! Are you kidding me? Tape measure blast by Piscotty? (Isn't that an Italian cookie?) How 'bout Khrush having that make-a-wish kid sign his jersey, then hitting one halfway to Berkeley?! Shades of Babe Ruth, huh? Davis--shy, modest and genuine--crying in the post-game interview was epic...are we looking at a "team of destiny?"
My fantasy:
1 -- We win the division on the last day of the regular season
2 -- Houston knocks off the Yankees in the wild card game (as much as I'd like to see us beat them, I can't have my cake and eat it too...)
3 -- We spank the Tribe in five
4 -- Houston squeaks by Boston--who bows out with an historic vintage Red Sox choke job--in seven games--setting up an A's v. Astros ALCS
5 -- After a brutal, grinding, back-and-forth, nip-and-tuck, controversy-filled series, we face arch-villian Justin Verlander in game 7 here. In the top of the ninth, we are up by one, and they have the bases juiced. With the go-ahead runs on the bases and Blake Treinen throwing 100-mph an hour sinkers, Matt Chapman makes an incredible play to end the game. We win the pennant.
6 -- In a totally anti-climactic World Series, we beat the hell out of whichever pathetic NL team they throw out there, hopefully St. Louis. (God, I despise them.)
I rest my case...
