modernism week 2020 panel a collaboration between CPP and COD
ARCHITECTURE
Interim Dean Lauren Weiss Bricker and Professor George Proctor will join a group of architecture experts on Feb. 21 to discuss the partnership between Cal Poly Pomona and the College of the Desert (COD), and the latter's new Palm Springs campus. The sold-out panel , moderated by architect Alan Hess , is part of Modernism Week .

Hear the latest updates on campus plans, view initial design concepts, and get the inside track on how the COD and ENV teams developed architectural concepts and ideas like "A Year in the Desert." LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
Professor Kyle Brown , who is active with the local environmental group Clean & Green Pomona , invites student volunteers to a series of Tree Planting Days. The first one kicks off at 8:30 a.m. this Saturday, Feb. 15, at Westmont Park . Other planting days are Feb. 29 (South San Antonio Avenue street trees); and March 14 and March 28 (La Verne Avenue street trees). To sign up, email kdbrown@cpp.edu .

Lecturer Douglas Kent ('06, master's in regenerative studies; '10, master's in landscape architecture) is a featured speaker at Sharpen Your Vision 20/20 - Keep the Environment in Focus! , a two-day symposium (Feb. 22-23) in San Diego organized by the Association of Professional Landscape Designers . His talk, "Firescaping: Creating Fire Resistant Properties and Communities," is scheduled on the first day of the program.

REGENERATIVE STUDIES
Last month lecturer Bethann Morrison accepted the Emerging Scholar Award and presented her dissertation at the 16th International Conference On Sustainability: Environmental, Cultural, Economic & Social Sustainability in Santiago, Chile. Morrison's dissertation ( "Creating the World We Want to Live In: Reconnecting for a Sustainable Future") supports her project, "The Building Community" in downtown Los Angeles. There, she leads a growing group of individuals who have experienced homelessness in the collective design of sustainable, supportive bridge housing solutions for Skid Row. Morrison teaches RS 3030 (Organization for Regenerative Practices) this spring at the Lyle Center.

NEUTRA VDL STUDIO
AND RESIDENCES

Artist Shio Kusaka will populate the historic Neutra VDL Studio and Residences the studio/residence of modernist architect Richard Neutra donated to CPP Foundation in 1990 with her signature ceramic vessels, sculptures, dinnerware and handcrafted textile designs inspired by the works of Agnes Martin , Josef Albers and Ellsworth Kelly .

The exhibition is curated by Douglas Fogle and Hanneke Skerath , who lead the curatorial office STUDIO LBV in Los Angeles.

ENV GALLERY

Professor Philip Pregill is curating "2019 Landscape Architecture Italy Program," a one-week exhibition on the college's longest-running study abroad program.

For 12 weeks every fall, students are immersed in study and projects serving the community of Castiglion Fiorentino in eastern Tuscany. More than 700 alumni have participated in the program since 1993.

2020 cavin family traveling fellowship
CAVIN FAMILY TRAVELING FELLOWSHIP
Registration is open for the 2020 Cavin Family Traveling Fellowship , which awards $15,000 to recent architecture graduates and young professionals (age 35 and under) to fund 10 weeks of travel and research. CPP ARC students graduating in 2020 are eligible to apply.

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE SCHOLARSHIPS
More than $50,000 will be awarded in the 2019-20 academic year that support the travel, development, public service and career ambitions of undergraduate and graduate students. See the full list here .

URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING SCHOLARSHIPS
A new endowed scholarship in memory of former department chair Harry Antoniades Anthony (1972-76) is now available to undergraduate and graduate URP students pursuing independent study outside California approved by the university for course credit to research urban design and planning issues in one or more major U.S. cities, including but not limited to New York City, Chicago, Boston, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and New Orleans.

Female URP majors can still submit applications for the Margarita P. McCoy Scholarship in Urban Planning , named after URP's and the nation's first full-time female planning professor and department chair (1976-89).

CPP SCHOLARSHIP FEST
Scholarship Fest is on! Students can now apply at the same time for scholarships for the 2019-20 and 2020-21. New listings are posted every week on the Cal Poly Pomona Bronco Scholarship Portal .
The CSU System honors the achievements of African-American students, faculty and staff in " Still I Rise: 29 Stories of Excellence and Achievement." President Soraya M. Coley and retired NBA referee Violet Palmer are among the series' first 15 profiles, joining CSU alums Ryan Coogler ("Black Panther," "Creed," "Fruitvale Station"), the Hon. Willie Brown and NASA astronaut Victor Glover. Nominations will be accepted throughout February.

Osvaldo "Ozzie" Gonzalez , LEED A.P. ( '06, master's in architecture), is in Portland's 2020 mayoral race , running on a policy platform of "prosperity, equity and sustainability."

It's a crowded field: 11 candidates, including incumbent Mayor Ted Wheeler. If elected, Gonzalez would be the city's first Latino mayor .

Jessica L. Medina ('19, urban and regional planning) is now a Management Analyst in the City of Artesia.

Medina works in the City Manager's Office, where she conducts research "to obtain sufficient, valid and reliable data for analysis and decision-making purposes." Her current projects include grant research and the implementation of a parking preferential district for northern Artesia.

Karl Joseph Hill ('81, urban and regional planning) will have a book signing session at the annual Taste of the Farm Store on March 7.

All proceeds from book sales at the event will benefit the Poly Pantry and the Motor Development Clinic in the College of Science.
