January Speaker: Ekeocha "Uju" Obianuju!
We are more than excited to announce that the Special Guest Speaker at People for Life's 41st Annual Pro-Life Breakfast will be Ekeocha Obianuju. Many people know her, more simply, as Uju.

Born and raised in Nigeria, our speaker works in England as a biomedical scientist. Uju is also the founder and president of Culture of Life Africa, an initiative dedicated to the promotion and defense of the African values of the sanctity of life, beauty of marriage, blessings of motherhood and the dignity of family life.

Uju published a new book earlier this year, Target Africa : Ideological Neo-colonialism of the Twenty-first Century. Just yesterday, she personally presented a copy of her book to Pope Francis in Rome. She is preparing for the release of a documentary movie, "Strings Attached" later this year. Please click here and watch a 2-minute trailer for the movie.

A full-page flyer with a more complete introduction to Uju and preliminary information about the 2019 Pro-Life Breakfast is available from www.peopleforlife.life.

The 41st Annual Pro-Life Breakfast will be held again this year at the Erie Bayfront Convention Center, on January 12, 2019, the Saturday just before the Washington, DC March for Life. The DC March for Life will take place on Friday, January 18.

Candidate for U.S. Senate to Visit Erie
One of the candidates for U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania, Lou Barletta, will be in Erie this Thursday, August 30 for a Meet & Greet event at Rainbow Gardens from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Everyone is welcome, including the whole family.

Barletta is endorsed by National Right to Life and the Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation. He has a 100% pro-life voting record and currently represents Pennsylvania's 11th Congressional District, which includes the Scranton-Wilkes Barre area and stretches south nearly to the Maryland state line.

Before you attend this free event and thank Congressman Barletta for his pro-life stand, please note that registration for the event is requested.

Barletta's opponent, incumbent Sen. Bob Casey, Jr., has an 80% pro-abortion voting record.

Unfortunately, Sen. Casey voted against a measure that would have de-funded Planned Parenthood just this week.

Celebrate Erie
Thanks to everyone who contacted the Mayor's office or otherwise expressed concern about our exclusion from Celebrate Erie this year. The support we received was very heartening. Even Congressman Mike Kelly was so concerned that he sent a letter of his own to Mayor Joe Schember.

City Councilman Kaz Kwitowski was in touch with us about the matter. He mentioned that he had heard from several other non-profits about their being excluded this year.

The section of Perry Square where the non-profits used to be was completely deserted.
People for Life Executive Director wrote aletter to the Mayor and eventually received a call from the City of Erie Events Coordinator Aaron Loncki. Aaron politely explained that the Celebrate Erie was being refashioned this year and that no issues-oriented non-profit groups were being included. In other words, People for Life was not being singled out because of our particular set of principles and convictions (our words). Walking around the event, one could readily see and be reassured that the new policy was indeed being adhered to.

The unfortunate thing is this: Although our organization takes positions on "the issues" and follows legislation and the political scene, we also provide educational opportunities that benefit the community as a whole and everyone in the community, whether they happen to agree with us completely, partially, or not at all. Many thousands of people have enjoyed looking at our models of preborn babies and have taken something good and positive away from the experience (including balloons and stickers for the kids...), while never expressing any political or ethical viewpoint at all. In fact, this describes the majority of our visitors. And among these thousands of people are those who would tell you they are "pro-choice" to one extent or another if you asked them.

Maybe if, in the future, our educational mission is better understood, there will be a place for People for Life at Celebrate Erie once again!

U.S. Supreme Court: Brett Kavanaugh
Please continue to make phone calls and send e-mails to Sen. Bob Casey and Sen. Pat Toomey on behalf of Supreme Court Justice appointee Judge Brett Kavanaugh.

As any of the pro-abortion organizations -- Planned Parenthood, National Abortion Rights Action League, National Abortion Federation, Emily's List, and so forth -- will assure you, the confirmation of Judge Kavanaugh may very well mean the demise of Roe v. Wade.

Sen. Bob Casey has already vowed to oppose Judge Kavanaugh. But let's not give him any reason to justify his anti-Kavanaugh position by saying that, according to his phone calls and e-mails, everyone in Pennsylvania agrees with him! And who knows? Maybe something will change his mind; he is up for election this November, after all.

Our other U.S. Senator, Pat Toomey said he is pleased with the nominee and is expected to vote to confirm. Even so, please call and e-mail both senators, or your state's two U.S. senators if you do not live in Pennsylvania, and express your support for Judge Kavanaugh.

Contact information can be found here for: Sen. Casey and Sen. Toomey

  • How abortion makes a nation old

  • Abortion, demographics and the "clergy shortage"

  • The death of Europe.

H.B. 2050: Down Syndrome Protection Bill
Please continue encouraging state Senator Dan Laughlin to get behind H.B. 2050. We would like to see the legislation brought up for a vote in the Pennsylvania state Senate as soon as it reconvenes next month. However, there might be some hesitation to do this unless the Senate leadership is confident there are enough votes to override pro-abortion Governor Tom Wolf's promised veto. Follow the link at the top of this E-Mail Update to find Sen. Laughlin's contact information. Click here for a flyer with lots of background information on this modest, but important legislation.

Erie Gives Day
Thanks to everyone who remembered the People for Life Education Fund on Erie Give Day!

We are very thankful for the generous support we received. This is the third year that our People for Life Education Fund has participated, and our Erie Gives Day support continues to grow.

The Education Fund received $4952 in donations (not including the matching portion). This is 136% of last year's donation total.

Our ranking in terms of total donations was 155th out of 381 participants. That is 59% of the way to the top of the list. Our ranking in terms of total number of donors was even more heartening: 73rd out 381 participants. That is 81% of the way to the very top of the list! We are sharing this, not in a spirit of competition with other non-profit groups, groups that also have important missions and do excellent work. Rather, we just want to share the encouraging evidence that a significant number of Erie-area residents really understand the gravity of the current situation, the urgency of the pro-life cause, and in particular the importance of pro-life educational efforts directed toward the general public.

We are so pleased that we have so many friends who share our sense of urgency and who believe in the work we are doing. That is encouraging! And by " we," we mean the People for Life organization and you as well. We are all in this battle together, after all, and everyone has a critical role to play.

Pro-Life Booths
People for Life's pro-life booth outreach shifts into high gear next week, with the Erie County Fair in Wattsburg. The Fair begins on Monday and runs through Saturday evening.

Beginning Labor Day, Monday, September 3 through Saturday, September 8, we will be at the Waterford Community Fair. Then, the following week, we will be at the Albion Area Fair from Tuesday, September 11 through Saturday, September 15.

We have a brand new banner to include in our displays, starting with Wattsburg, and a new handout piece titled, "Fact Check."

We hope the banner will encourage people to think "outside the box" in regard to human life issues. "Justice" and "Equality" are certainly high in many people's vocabulary these days. Unfortunately, they are not in common parlance when it comes to the rights and lives of human beings who are waiting for birth.

Materials and labor to produce the banner were donated by Signs by Renee' of Saegertown.

The new brochure is based on the "Did You Know?" brochure that we had been using as an economical, general-purpose handout for the past ten years or so.
