A word from our Director of the Wellness Center
Dos and Don’ts for Helping Your Student Navigate This Transition
Dos:

  • Remind them they are not alone. This is a stressful transition for students across the nation but with your support and the support of WPU faculty and staff they can push through!
  • Understand that your student is still a full time student. Classes will resume online on March 23rd and they will be engaging in coursework throughout the end of the semester.
  • If possible, provide your student with a space to work on their schoolwork that is separate from their bed.
  • Encourage them to stay engaged and check their email. Our University staff is working diligently to provide remote engagement opportunities that will pique the interest of all students. This is a great way for them to connect with fellow WPU students all around the world.
  • Practice social distancing. Your student is home so that we can do our part to flatten the curve, protect our campus community and return to normal operations as soon as possible. We can’t wait to see your student’s smiling face at move-in next year but until then please try to stay healthy and happy.

Don’ts:
  • Don’t overstimulate your student. Their arrival home might be exciting for you but your student has just undergone a stressful transition. They may be missing their friends, their clubs and organizations and the community that has become their second home. Allow them time to mourn their academic year and the memories that have departed along with it.
  • Don’t treat them like they are in high school. Your student is a young adult with valid feelings, thoughts, concerns and abilities. Treat your student as a young adult who is capable of managing their coursework on their own.
  • Don’t overstep boundaries with faculty. Online learning is a continuation of the academic year and FERPA will still apply.
