One of Canada's preeminent painters, Daniel Hughes' esteemed career is marked by a series of artistic achievements, currently merging his hyper-developed figurative style with the immediacy of his abstraction. Layers that rest upon layers form a repeated locus in his work, as he paints from darker to lighter layers of light, while finished paintings see added and subtracted layers that create a textual dimension to the canvas. His acclaimed figurative style breaks through this process to offer profound and affecting depictions of his subjects. Hughes' virtuosic capability and unforgiving working process guide him through a web of artistic developments as he negotiates the boundaries of his, and our own, humanity.

Hughes was born in 1968 and lives in his birthplace of Kingston, Ontario. He earned a BFA with the Ontario College of Art and an MFA at the New York Academy of Art, along with numerous awards. He received the Elizabeth Greenshields Award for Figurative Art on two occasions (1991 and 1995) and has been in many solo and group exhibitions throughout North America and the United Kingdom. Hughes was shortlisted for the British Portrait Prize in 2012 and the Kingston Portrait Prize on several occasions, receiving honourable mention in 2017.

Ingram Gallery's fall exhibition season sees Daniel Hughes' Flux being followed by a retrospective of the paintings of Brian Burke (1952-2017). A member of the Royal Canadian Academy, Burke's recent passing brought the loss of one of our most lucid and cultivated figurative artists. Please join us in appreciation and awe as Ingram Gallery showcases Burke's visionary worldview in a retrospective exhibition from October 20 - November 10.
