SHARI RUNNER AND SYLVIA PUENTE ON CHICAGO TONIGHT
Sylvia Puente, executive director of the Latino Policy Forum, and Shari Runner, former CEO of the Chicago Urban League who is now starting a think tank called the Humanity Institute, were among a panel of community leaders featured on WTTW's Chicago Tonight discussing issues from police and violence, to community development and education, an assessment of Mayor Rahm Emanuel's legacy.

ADLER SPACE BALLOON PROJECT AIMS TO MAP CHICAGO LIGHT POLLUTION
The Far Horizons team at the Adler Planetarium (Michelle B. Larson) launched a balloon from Kankakee River State Park in Bourbonnais in late July as part of a project to map Chicago's light pollution.

MARYSUE BARRETT ON ILLINOIS' PARKS

in
Crain's on the importance of Illinois' parks.
"Metropolitan Chicago's recreational spaces are a jewel. The city of Chicago is nicknamed 'Urbs in Horto'-City in a Garden-for its legacy of preserving and promoting green and open spaces," writes MarySue Barrett. "Today, however, only 49 percent of people in our region have adequate park access, according to CMAP's ON TO 2040 plan, and the equipment at many parks is degraded. Because residents value parks, we rightfully pay more for recreation in Illinois than the national average."

THINK TANK HOSTED BY ROSS BARNEY ARCHITECTS PROMPTS DISCUSSION AROUND TACKLING INEQUALITY
The panel discussion "Designing Cities for Equity and Justice" featuring MarySue Barrett and Carol Ross Barney was hosted at the downtown offices of Ross Barney Architects in July. There was much discussion around the Riverwalk and how it is a space that promotes equity.
The wide range of the river means that it can act as a focal point for local color and culture from neighborhood to neighborhood, and that's good in "a city that has many [cultures] and celebrates many," said MarySue Barrett.
"We can talk about the whole city in terms of systems, and how justly they serve different neighborhoods," said Carol Ross Barney.

THE HEALTHY COMMUNITIES FOUNDATION PLANNING TO DONATE $6 MILLION IN GRANTS NEXT YEAR
The Healthy Communities Foundation (Maria Pesqueira), formerly the Arthur Foundation, is planning to give out about $6 million in grants next year to promote health equity and combat disparate health outcomes in an area within a five-mile radius of MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn.
"We aim to address the conditions that influence health and access to care so that all the residents of our region enjoy their full potential for good health," said Maria Pesqueira, President, Healthy Communities

FUND CEO HEATHER ANICHINI RECEIVES NATIONAL CIVIC LEADERSHIP AWARD
Chicago Public Education Fund CEO Heather Y. Anichini received Teach For America's Peter Jennings Award for Civic Leadership on September 5, 2018. Established in 2007, the annual award is presented to Teach For America alumni who embody the organization's core values and whose work led to significant change for excellence and equity in education in the last year. Under Heather's leadership, The Fund has expanded to support 300 principals annually through executive leadership and retention opportunities, and gives voice to the principal perspective through its annual engagement survey.
"In the last six years, Chicago's principals and their teacher teams have demonstrated a relentless commitment to ensuring that our students succeed, often against great odds," Heather Anichini said. "This award is a reminder of the debt we all owe to them and of their everyday courage. I am honored to tell a piece of their story - of Chicago's story - on a national stage."

The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) proudly announces the 25 winners of the ASLA 2018 Professional Awards. Selected from 368 entries, the awards recognize the best of landscape architecture in the general design, analysis and planning, communications, research and residential design categories from the United States and around the world.
Ross Barney Architects (Carol Ross Barney) received an honorary award for the Chicago Riverwalk and Chicago Department of Transportation.
