James L. Belin Celebration
Sunday, May 20
5 PM in  St. John's Outdoor Chapel

The Centennial Team invites you to join us as we commemorate the life and legacy of the Rev. James L. Belin. Born in 1788, he was greatly influenced by the traveling preachers of his day. He entered into connection with the Methodist Church in 1810, was ordained a deacon in1812, and became an elder in 1815. His poor health prevented him from being assigned any specific work, however ...

"...he was not idle. He sought opportunities to do good. Whatsoever his hand found to do, he did it with all his might. As a minister of Christ, he was gentle to all men, apt to teach, patient in all things. His benevolent heart led him to the abodes of the afflicted, and the destitute to sympathize and relieve them."

As the descendant of a wealthy Huguenot family, he became the owner of land between the Waccamaw River and Murrells Inlet. In 1850, meeting with the Trustees of the SC Methodist Conference, he signed a Letter of Agreement , establishing The Mission for the Waccamaw Neck, on the bank of this creek, now the campus of Belin Memorial United Methodist Church.  We celebrate giving thanks to God for his example of a life of service, love and giving.

Our guest speaker this Sunday will be Lee Brockington, senior interpreter at Hobcaw Barony. Her topic is "Time and Place: Rev. Belin and the Waccamaw Neck." We will also hear from our own Morgan Welch who has been with us since birth and will soon leave us to enter Duke University School of Divinity.

Light refreshments will follow in the Belin Garden.

New Women's Study
9-week Women's Study Begins Monday, June 4

6 PM in the Family Life Center

Have a seat on the mountainside . . .

What does it mean to be a citizen of the kingdom of Heaven? Matthew's gospel opens with three chapters containing Jesus' longest recorded message - a sermon given to His disciples early in His ministry to articulate what the life of a Christ-follower would look like.

In His sweeping depiction of kingdom citizenship, Jesus utters some of the most familiar passages in all of Scripture. Most of us have only encountered the Sermon on the Mount in fragments, considering its subdivisions as complete teachings in their own right - a study on blessedness, a reflection on the Lord's Prayer, a meditation on lilies of the field. But what if we navigated these three chapters as they were originally heard: as one cohesive, well-ordered message, intended to challenge us to think differently about repentance, salvation, and sanctification?

Seat yourself on a mountainside to learn at the feet of Jesus. Ask for ears to hear and a heart to respond to the teaching of our King.

Please contact Jane Sparks if you are interested in joining this study ([email protected], 843.357.5185)
