April 20, 2020

Dear Columbus Academy Families,
Earlier today, Governor Mike DeWine announced that all of Ohio's K-12 schools will continue online learning for the remainder of this school year. Out of the safety of our students and families, Columbus Academy will comply with this order.

While hardly unexpected, it is still disappointing for our faculty, staff and students in its finality. Our school has been preparing for such a scenario, of course, and while there are no simple solutions or breezy conclusions, we are working hard at planning for several events and traditions to still take place in the best ways we know how to offer them. We will keep you informed as those highly anticipated pieces fall in place.

This order will also undoubtedly affect our popular Summer Experience programs, and we will be providing details on all of that soon.

While the effects of this pandemic have been difficult on everyone in our community, we are especially aware of our outstanding Class of 2020, who should not have to end their time at Academy under these conditions. We will do everything in our power to celebrate them and provide them with the best send-off possible.

One of our seniors, Andrew Cahall, recently penned a very thoughtful piece for The Academy Life. I hope you will take the time to read his editorial "In Praise of Normal: A Senior's COVID-19 Reflection" as well as Gurby Vaziri's well researched article on the closing of Academy during the 1918 flu pandemic.

We realize that many of you are facing very challenging situations. Please do not hesitate to let someone -- teachers, counselors, nurses, administrators, PACA leaders -- know if you need assistance of any kind. We have an incredible community that is here to support you. As an example, I just love this graphic our first grade teachers posted for their students this morning.

Expect to hear from me again soon,

Melissa Soderberg
Head of School
